This subject invites students to consider the ways in which health, illness, and wellbeing are shaped by social, cultural, political, and economic forces. As opposed to focusing on individual behaviours in isolation, SOC313 explores how broad social structures – such as inequality, gender norms, medicalisation, and rampant global capitalism – shape our understanding of what it means to be ‘healthy’ and ‘well’. We use sociological theories, case studies, and contemporary controversies and social issues (from wellness influencers to abortion access in the United States) to interrogate mainstream narratives around health and wellness, encouraging students to consider a more inclusive, ethical, and socially just approach to health.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Healthy Lifestyles

In Indigenous Knowledges in Health and Wellbeing we explore Indigenous models of health and wellbeing as applied to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students critically examine how viewing health from holistic, Indigenous perspectives compares to a biomedical, Western model of health. Indigenous scholarship on health and wellbeing is introduced and students explore how research that is framed from Indigenous perspectives brings narratives of strength rather than deficit. We examine the seven domains (connection to Culture; Country; Family/Kinship; Body; Mind &amp; Emotion; Spirit &amp; Ancestors; and Community) of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Model of Social and Emotional Wellbeing as well as other Indigenous models of wellbeing. Indigenous Knowledges in Health and Wellbeing

This subject delves into the critical evaluation of evidence supporting complementary health choices that empower individuals to live well with cancer. Students will explore the essential components required to build and sustain an effective and healthy nursing workforce. The unit will cover key concepts, complexities, and models of nursing care delivery, including the use of technology to optimise outcomes for cancer patients. Furthermore, students will examine the implications for cancer care delivery within the contemporary Australian healthcare system, including funding models and practice standards. Strengths-Based Cancer Care

This subject focuses on advanced symptom management and communication strategies in cancer care, preparing nurses to recommend evidence-based approaches to prevent and minimise the side effects of cancer treatments, optimising patient function and comfort. Students will learn to develop patient-centred, comprehensive care plans in collaboration with patients, their caregivers, and the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to enhance quality of life. The unit covers various approaches to effective, timely, and context-specific communication, emphasising the importance of legal and ethical frameworks in end-of-life decision-making. Advancements in Comprehensive Wound Care

Wound care and infection prevention is a rapidly growing clinical area leading the way for tissue management, infection control, diagnosis, and assessment of critical issues in wound management.  Technologies such as digital, e-health and app-based sources are being rapidly absorbed into clinical practice. With a growing plethora of advanced wound therapies such as interactive dressings, tissue substitutes, and negative pressure wound therapy there are many tools in the clinician’s armamentarium for wound prevention and management.  This unit will investigate contemporary wound management therapies and the role of the digital technologies for wound management. The unit will also investigate the different types of advanced healing therapies, dressings, and devices available for clinical use and critically evaluate the evidence and clinical utility in specific health care settings and regions with a patient centric focus.  Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Contemporary Wound Management Therapies

This unit is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the concepts and practices of wound assessment across a variety of different wound types. Wound Assessment in Practice

This subject is designed to foster knowledge of concepts, frameworks and practices of clinical and corporate governance, and an understanding of their application in health care settings. The integral links between an effective clinical and corporate governance framework and the four domains of patient safety and quality (consumer participation, clinical effectiveness, effective workforce and risk management) will be explored.
