In this subject, you will examine foundational knowledge of the anatomy and physiology relating to structures of the head, neck and thorax. The functional anatomy and physiology of the head, neck and thorax are examined with a focus on structures necessary for speaking, swallowing, voice, respiration and hearing, and to study the underlying neurological and physiological processes that enable humans to think, hear, speak and swallow. These knowledges and skills underpin effective assessment and intervention for communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan and are foundational to clinical speech pathology practice.

Anatomy and Physiology of the Head, Neck and Thorax

This subject teaches the fundamentals of critical thinking, with particular focus on applications in the health-care sector. You will learn how to construct, analyse, and critically evaluate arguments; how to reason logically and well; and how to communicate your thoughts clearly and effectively. You will learn practical techniques for the evaluation of reasoning, and apply these techniques with fellow students to explore topics and arguments from health-care, academia, and the popular media. The skills you acquire in this subject will be invaluable, not just across academic disciplines, but more broadly for leading a life enriched by critical thinking.

Critical Thinking: Reasoning Skills for Health Professionals

This subject explores how colonisation impacts the contemporary health situation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their access to and engagement with health services . Cultural safety, self-determination, collaboration and anti-racism are central concepts within this subject. You will have the opportunity to reflect upon your responses to racism personally and professionally critically and explore how one’s cultural positioning impacts health care delivery and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will also engage in activities that strengthen self-awareness and reflection and which promote your capacity to demonstrate sensitivity and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in the context of providing culturally safe health care. This subject will equip you to become a health professional who can advocate for approaches in health care practice, health service delivery, and population health initiatives that are anti-racist, culturally safe, and further self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing

Evidence based Medication Safety Innovation will help you identify and analyse medication-safety issues encountered in a variety of clinical settings. You will initially learn about and appraise existing issues and interventions that attempt to improve the Quality Use of Medicines or address medication-safety issues. You will then devise innovative ideas to overcome these issues and develop evidence-based solutions that could be implemented in the real world.Particular emphasis is placed on the combined skills of practice-based mitigation of medication-safety risks, while using research skills and knowledge, to intervene in identified problematic areas in an evidence-based manner.

Evidence Based Medication Safety Innovation

This subject is a self-directed, fully on-line introductory subject, that uses patient cases to develop your research skills to make evidence-based decisions This subject introduces important concepts and develops skills in evidence-based medicine, asking and answering well-articulated clinical questions, and critical review of research literature. You will also develop evidence-based practice skills such as framing an answerable research question and search strategies for a patient&#39;s unique circumstances. You will use medical databases, and learn how to identify high-quality evidence. The skills developed in this subject will enhance independent clinical decision-making.

Evidence Based Pharmacotherapeutic Practice

The subject will provide you with advanced knowledge in the pharmacological management of diseases within the context of advanced practice. This will also include the areas of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as they apply to the therapeutic management of conditions relevant to advanced practice. You will develop a sound understanding of the quality use of medicines, and some familiarity with Poisons and Therapeutics Goods Act and Regulations, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and medication management for advanced practitioners.

Advanced Pharmacology & Medication Management

In this subject you will be introduced to foundational concepts of pharmacist roles and responsibilities within the context of ethical and safe professional practice within the Australian health care system. You will begin using core online pharmacy resources to introduce clinical and critical thinking skills. You will also learn about Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health status and culture. In addition, you will learn about health of other populations including culturally and linguistically diverse people and people from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pharmacy in Health Care

Counselling and Advice on Medicines focusses on patient-centred care with patient counselling concepts and application of communication skills in clinical scenarios. This patient-centred care is extended to the study of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Principles of drug therapy such as adverse reactions, drug interactions, medication adherence, patient counselling are discussed and applied to simulated cases.

Counselling and Advice on Medicines

In this subject, you will be introduced to the issue of violence in society across the lifespan and how it can relate to you in your healthcare agency. Violence will be examined within international, national and local contexts, exploring the social and cultural components associated with violent behaviour and current and emerging approaches to violence prevention. You will be encouraged to engage with policies related to violence and to examine the complex issue of healthcare-related violence.

Violence and Health

This subject will provide you with the opportunity to apply theories of teaching and learning in healthcare settings. Your knowledge and skills will be further developed through examining practical issues related to assessing learners as well as the provision of feedback to enhance performance. Your teaching knowledge and skills will be evidenced through lesson planning, the development of a teaching portfolio, and reflection on practice.
