This subject of study will enable the student to consolidate understanding and application of the methods and instruments that form the foundation for monitoring quality and safety of healthcare delivery ensuring optimal outcomes. Students will analyse the leadership and organisational factors integral to the development of a strong clinical governance framework. Knowledge gained in this course will equip students to strengthen clinical governance frameworks and patient safety processes in many and varied health services and settings. Deep exploration of clinical governance undertaken in this course will empower students to ensure that quality healthcare standards are maintained and to become agents of change for the benefit of patients, colleagues and healthcare systems.

Clinical Governance

This subject introduces the students to key management strategies including management skills, conflict resolution, change management and team building. Topics such as development of leadership capability, leadership development techniques and coaching are included in this subject. The relevant application of leadership theories in this context will also be examined.

Management

This course provides learners with an opportunity to explore coaching and supervision models across the professions.The course will address specific challenges facing clinical supervisors, particularly in relation to optimising teaching and learning in clinical settings. By exploring best practice, as leaders, the course considers principles that underpin effective mentoring and role modelling in the context of the clinical setting.

Coaching and Supervision in Health

This subject explores how climate change and environmental degradation affect human health and health care systems, and the impact of health care on the environment. Learners identify, analyse and interpret the available sources of evidence that describe these escalating health challenges. Strategies that can be applied within the health sector to adapt to and mitigate climate change and environmental degradation are examined and critically appraised. The subject explores how sustainability can be embedded as a dimension of quality in health care. The importance of working effectively through organisational structures to enable the implementation of proposed strategies, policies and plans is reinforced through examples drawn from practice. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are used as a framework through which a systematic and systems theory approach to the health effects of climate change can be viewed.

Environmental Sustainability and Health Care Systems

This subject provides learners with an opportunity to explore key contemporary issues facing health professional educators and leaders as we traverse the changing learning and healthcare landscape.Established principles pertaining to leading organisational change are explored to consider strategies and innovation in the way in which we plan and deliver educational change to improve established practices in health professional education.

Contemporary Issues in Health Professional Education and Leadership

This subject consolidates students’ previous experience and knowledge of key leadership strategies including leadership skills/attributes of a good leader, performance development and team building. Students will be able to apply leadership development strategies such as leadership styles within their work environment.
