Healthcare delivery is constantly evolving in the face of population growth, our increasingly diverse and aging communities, changing approaches to delivering healthcare and availability of new technology. Health professionals need to be more collaborative, team-focussed and adaptable than ever before. To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. Each specialisation provides the knowledge and skills for students to make evidence informed decisions in their chosen area to meet industry needs and workforce demands.The Health Economics specialisation will develop your understanding of contemporary economic principles and how they inform healthcare policy decision-making. The challenge posed to human health by climate change and other encroaching planetary boundaries is considerable, and there is growing pressure for healthcare systems to take action to reduce their environmental impact. The economic and fiscal shock caused by COVID-19 provides further impetus to closely examine the sustainability of the existing economic models that underpin our healthcare systems.This specialisation will provide you with a foundation in the theories and models used in economics, financial and managerial accounting in healthcare organisations to explore topical issues in the public and private health sector. You will investigate critical topics and approaches, considering funding models, supply and demand factors, and economic evaluations. Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Health Economics)

Aged Care Leadership and Management: Effective Internal and External Integration

This subject allows students to develop the methodological framework and tools by which a research project on a contemporary healthcare management issue can be undertaken. Students will conceptualise and prepare their project applying the values and principles of research integrity, considering risk, benefit and consent issues. Students will gain the skills to appraise the application and matching of methods to research questions. Students will have opportunities to engage in industry case studies about management of ethical issues and research protocol development.

Research Methods in Health Management

Theories of regulation, governance and national standards for accreditation are reviewed to provide a foundation for organisational management requirements and clinical systems for effective, sustainable high-quality healthcare. Healthcare organisations need for effective understanding of and approaches to risk management, interprofessional practice and continuous quality improvement are reviewed. Analysis will investigate the effectiveness of clinical governance systems for assessing, monitoring, and improving management and clinical systems. To operationalise these requirements, this subject reviews the overarching National Model Clinical Governance Framework (NMCGF) and National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards to determine appropriate systems for clinical governance, accountability and clinical performance and effectiveness. This involves the review and application of the NSQHS Clinical Governance Standard.

Clinical Governance in Health Care

This subject will enable students to appraise the theory, practice and process for achieving safety and quality in healthcare organisations. The subject focuses on identifying quality management processes, practices and tools for the review and improvement of healthcare delivery. Additionally, strategies and mechanisms for safety and risk management will be identified and evaluated. The focus will be on how managers engage healthcare professionals, patients and the community to deliver safety and quality requirements. The subject identifies tools and implementation requirements of legislative regulations and professional practices. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

Safety in Health Service Management

This subject investigates management concepts and theories to improve the integration and functionality of healthcare organisations. Strategies to improve the management of an organisation for enhanced care quality and equitable services will be discussed. A range of management issues are examined including leadership, strategic planning, change, and stakeholder behaviour. These issues are considered at the individual, team, and organisational levels and how they interact. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

Leading and Managing Healthcare Organisations

This subject investigates theories and strategies for managing and improving complex adaptive healthcare organisations. Models of healthcare organisations will be introduced to analyse their structure, functions, processes and limitations. Complex adaptive systems thinking will be applied to healthcare organisations to understand their actions and points of resistance. Organisational theory will be used to analyse and interpret opportunities and constraints for service delivery. Mechanisms for achieving change through using a range of theories will be reviewed, including complexity and implementation sciences, organisational resilience, reliability and human factors. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.[Special Note: this subject is offered in odd-numbered years only.]

Managing Complex Adaptive Healthcare Organisations

This subject examines the theories and frequently used techniques of economics, financial and managerial accounting in healthcare organisations. Public and private funding issues will be examined across the acute, primary and aged care sectors. Students will apply this knowledge to determine cost efficient and effective decision making, taking into account safety, quality, resource considerations and principles of value-based healthcare, in general. Students will investigate critical topics and approaches, including funding models; supply and demand factors; economic evaluations, financial statements and working capital cycle; budgeting approaches and key performance indicators; and long-term investments. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry relevant studies and analysis.

Health Finance, Economics and Accounting

This subject allows students to examine the link between ethics, legislation and governance. The subject will investigate the need for ethics to inform legislation, the translation of that legislation into policy, and how policy is enacted through governance. The subject presents the fundamentals of health sector governance in a cross-disciplinary way by integrating legal, management, administration, social-cultural and financial issues and policy perspectives.The ethical principles germane to clinical practice, research, and quality improvement processes will also be covered. Current issues will be assessed including debates associated with end-of-life care, fertility, rationing of resources, regulation of clinical practices and risk management. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analyse.

Health Ethics, Law and Governance

This subject provides students an opportunity to conduct and report upon a translational research project addressing a contemporary healthcare management issue. Students will be responsible for the effective management of their research team, involving industry and academic supervisors. Students are expected to utilise evidence from the literature to direct their research, and when reporting their findings make a contribution to improving the evidence base. Students will communicate the results of their research project and make specific industry-based recommendations for improving organisational performance. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

Health Management Research Thesis

This subject provides students an opportunity to plan a translational research project addressing a contemporary healthcare management issue. Students will examine research theories and frameworks to be able to articulate and justify a rigorous research design. Students will develop skills for the effective management of research teams. This will include the ability to negotiate organisational priorities by identifying and developing networks for project implementation. Students are expected to utilise evidence from the literature to guide how they will undertake their research. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.The translational research project must be approved by the relevant AIHSM course coordinator.
