The Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice equips students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to practice as a qualified migration agent in Australia. The degree emphasises problem-based, real-life interactive learning experiences. The graduate diploma is the minimum qualification for individuals seeking registration in Australia as a migration agent.
Upon successful completion of the degree and the capstone exam administered by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA), graduates may seek registration to practice as a registered migration agent. There are additional requirements for registration as a migration agent.

Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice

This program meets one of the knowledge requirements of becoming a registered Migration Agent in Australia. The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) recognises Griffith University as a provider of the Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice. Applicants intending to register should also ensure they meet OMARA requirements for registration. Only Australian citizens (or those holding permanent resident visas) can register with OMARA.Our courses are specifically designed to equip emerging migration agents to meet the Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents. Graduates are equipped with a broad range of knowledge about the theoretical and practical aspects required to succeed in this occupation. Our program and course design, as well as our online capstone preparation module are important components in supporting students as part of their own study for the independent capstone exam (see OMARA website for details).As a registered Migration Agent, there are a range of opportunities to specialise in certain areas or assist clients with a broad range of important work.Registered Migration Agents have a great deal of career flexibility, with the ability to work in large corporate settings, or to run their own sole trader business from home.This program is open both to lawyers and to those without a legal background - specifically those who wish to become a registered migration agent . As a currently registered migration agent wishing to complete the program, you should also note that it will provide credit towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. The program may also offer credit to lawyers for CPD. You should check with the relevant law society in this regard.This program is also suitable for people working in industries where having knowledge of migration law is important, including accountants, engineers, ICT professionals and paralegals.Note: Graduates of this award intending to apply to the <a href="https://www.mara.gov.au/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA)</a> for registration as a Migration Agent must also pass a separate capstone exam. OMARA will provide details of this separate requirement on its website.

This subject was previously &#39;Australian Tax Law&#39;.This subject introduces students to the core concepts in Australian taxation and identifies the framework (both legal and administrative) behind those concepts. The knowledge gained through this exploration enables the application of the framework to current issues faced by individuals and businesses whilst ensuring compliance with statutory and professional requirements. Basic concepts of assessable income (including capital gains) and allowable deductions are extended through different entity structures with a focus on application to real life scenarios. The subject includes an introduction to Fringe Benefits Tax as well as Goods and Services Tax. Aspects of International tax and tax avoidance issues are also explored.

Australian Tax Law and Practice

This subject was previously known as Human Rights Instruments and Institutions.This subject explores international and national human rights systems, including the role of the United Nations and international and national laws in defining, protecting and upholding human rights. This subject is previously known as PICX845 Intelligence Theory and Practice.This unit exposes students to the diverse theories and/or theorems of intelligence as well as the different areas of intelligence and to intelligence process methodologies in a variety of contexts.and practice. It discusses the essential characteristics of intelligence systems and examines how the intelligence function fits within a dynamic national or international security context, situating the intelligence function within the Law Enforcement, Foreign, National Security and Military domains. The unit examines the Australian and selected international and other Western intelligence communities.as well as premier non-Western intelligence communities such as China, Russia, and other regions.

This subject was previously known as PICX818 Global Counter Terrorism in the Australian Context
This subject will examine the structure and components of global counter-terrorism policies and initiatives. It will explore the relationships between foreign policy, international relations, and community dynamics exposing students to the complexity involved in delivering and evaluating effective solutions to the dynamic security threats posed by violent extremism. It will consider the complex and inter-connected roles played by organisations at a global, national and local level including the United Nations, Attorney General’s Department, Office of Premier and Cabinet, Multicultural NSW and a range of NGOs. Contemporary literature drawn from terrorism studies and real-world case-studies will expose students to important theoretical arguments relating to radicalisation, deradicalisation, and desistance and how these impact on the delivery of effective counterterrorism strategies.

You’ll explore strategic counter terrorism with a focus on radicalisation, countering violent extremism and terrorist narratives. Debate responses, how terrorism ends and the relationship between counter terrorism and human rights. 

This subject was previously known as Refugee Rights.This subject explores forced migration from a range of perspectives, encouraging a critical engagement with the topic and the perspectives of those with lived experience. It examines theories and practices in relation to refugees and the politics of forced migration as well as the evolution of the international regime for refugee protection. ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement is the second of two subjects (ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement) where students apply and consolidate learning acquired in the Master of Public Health program to prepare them to practice as public health professionals. It is linked to the Australian Qualifications Framework and supported by educational theory on the importance of experiential learning for preparing students for professional practice. A major learning activity of ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement is a project consisting of a practice-based public health activity or fieldwork that involves the integration of knowledge and skills across multiple public health areas, allowing students to directly apply learnings with the aim of improving and advancing population health. Students will undertake ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement at the completion of ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice, where they will apply knowledge acquired in -PUBHPUBH649 Preparation for Practice. In ACU-PUB655 Practice Placement, students are to demonstrate core public health competencies as appropriate, for example community engagement and ethical practice. Overall, the aim of ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement is to enable students to apply and integrate their public health skills and knowledge within a summative public health practice experience.
