Please note:  This subject was previously known as Text and Culture.This subject presents you with methods for analysing and critically evaluating cultural texts. Block One provides an introduction to semiotics and discourse analysis with emphasis on advertising and visual texts. Block Two introduces you to the concepts of narrative and genre with examples drawn from television texts, while Block Three focuses on television genres. Block 4 explores research methods for the historical research of television texts. This subject will enhance your understanding of how texts and textual systems work while also introducing you to concepts and theories used in the analysis of the media texts and discourse.

Image, Text and Culture

This subject was previously known as Italian Eco-Cinema.This interdisciplinary online course introduces students to transnational eco-cinema studies through an exploration of 21st-century Italian films. Designed for a diverse student cohort, it brings together those with interests in Italian studies, the environmental humanities or screen studies. No prior knowledge of film analysis is required; the course presents the necessary concepts and tools for analysis from an eco-cinema perspective. However, students who do have experience in screen studies will be able to extend their knowledge of the cinematic traditions informing contemporary Italian film-making as well as exploring the new methodological framework of eco-cinema. Students of Italian will further develop their linguistic, cultural and intercultural competence through access to additional resources in Italian and completion of assessment in Italian. For those not studying Italian, all necessary materials are provided in English. PREREQUISITES: For students undertaking assessment in Italian: 2092LHS or equivalent. Eco-Cinema

Learn the script formats and development processes to design and write a short piece of drama screenwriting, up to 15 minutes in screen duration. The subject requires you to plan and develop a screenplay concept from idea through to an effective design plan. From this, you will then write the first act of your screenplay for critical assessment, before refining the work into a professionally formatted full draft including revised first act, second and third act of your screenplay. The primary focus of the subject is on mastery of the elements of effective screen story design, structure and dynamics.

This subject was previously known as SGY348 Fame and Celebrity.
This subject explores key concepts in the sociology of celebrity and considers ways in which fame is produced in contemporary society. A historical approach is incorporated, with discussion of the conceptualization of celebrity since the early 20th century.
In examining how society assigns, generates and uses fame and celebrity status, the subject emphasizes the way cultural industries construct celebrities and what the resulting omnipresence of fame means for individuals and society.

Watch how society has generated and assigned celebrity since the 20th century. Ponder the phenomenon of the movie superstar. Switch onto the role reality TV has played in the extension of screen celebrity. Ask questions about the omnipresence of fame.

Screen Celebrity and Stardom

This subject was previously known as Classic Hollywood Cinema.Explore the history of Hollywood film-making from its earliest productions to the contemporary blockbuster. Beginning with a brief look at early cinema (the 1890s to the 1910s), we focus in the first half of the subject on the industrial and technological development of the Hollywood studio system and its production of the classic Hollywood film. During this period (1920s to the 1950s) we see Hollywood develop as a national cinema and the beginnings of its role in global film cultures.In the second half of the subject, we investigate the industrial, technological and aesthetic transformations of what is sometimes described as &#39;post-classical&#39; Hollywood (1960s to the present), concluding with a look at the globally-owned and distributed, multimedia industry that is contemporary Hollywood. The subject aims to develop skills in historical research and textual analysis, as well as a better and more critical understanding of Hollywood film, industries, and cultures.

Hollywood Cinema

This subject was previously known as Screen Analysis 2.Take a seat alongside some of cinema’s most celebrated auteurs. Cast the spotlight on filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Guillermo Del Toro and Taika Waititi. Develop an understanding of how some directors can leave an undeniable stamp on each film they make.The average entertainment film is the result of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of creative and technical personnel working together. And yet, certain directors have come to be known for their ability to put an individual stamp on their films, despite the collective and industrial nature of commercial film production. This subject looks closely at the work of such directors in studio era and contemporary Hollywood cinema, as well as global cinema more generally. Looking closely at the work of and critical responses toHollywood’s Howard Hawks, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, and Kathryn Bigelow, as well as Mexico’s Guillermo Del Toro and New Zealand’s Taika Waititi, this course emphases aesthetic and thematic close analyses while considering the idea of the director-as-film-author or auteur in its social, cultural and industrial contexts.

Great Directors

This unit investigates &#39;Television&#39; as a global medium and explores theoretical viewpoints on the nature of the medium and how it is studied. It provides an historical overview, contextualising television&#39;s development as technology and cultural form in the broadcast and post-broadcast era. The unit examines the relationship between government policy, industry practice and aesthetic outcome and analyses a selection of television programs, formats and modes of address.

Evaluate television’s role in reflecting social and cultural attitudes back at the audience. Watch how shows are affected by policy. Critically analyse specific programs. Switch onto some of the most important people and institutions in television.

Television Studies

As enthusiastic consumers - perhaps even as fans - of screen entertainments, we talk a lot about what film and television fictions mean. But how do they make those meanings? Students taking this course will have the opportunity to gain a new appreciation of a global range of film texts including some notable classics of cinema. But it does not offer a chronological history of cinema. Instead, the featured films have been chosen for study because they exemplify key aspects of film form and style. By engaging closely and critically with these films, and participating in the weekly Discussion Board, students will gain a better understanding of screen storytelling, audiovisual communication and aesthetics, along with some basic historical and theoretical frameworks for thinking critically about screen entertainment media. This course is foundational to advanced historical and theoretical study of film and television media.

Introduction to Screen Analysis

Please note:  This subject was previously known as Screen History and Research.This course offers a broad introduction to global cinema history from the invention of film to the present, with a focus on key film movements, representative national cinemas, and significant examples of film as an art, entertainment, historical document, political intervention, and social commentary.
