The Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education (Primary) is an initial-teacher education program; it aims to prepare Primary teachers who can teach from Kindergarten to Year 6 in inclusive settings and special classes. It is a generalist primary program emphasising special and inclusive education. The course has been designed to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Students graduate with a National Primary Specialisation as mandated by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), in English/Literacy in the inclusive classroom.The course is structured to provide in the first year, eight discipline units across the Primary Key Learning Areas, to ensure a spread of content background; successful completion of this first year also gives all students, irrespective of their educational backgrounds, the opportunity to demonstrate they meet the Government&#39;s <a href="https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/teacher-accreditation/how-accreditation-works/your-accreditation/future-teachers/increased-academic-standards" target="_blank">academic standards for studying teaching</a>.This course is accredited with the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) and is undergoing routine re-accreditation for 2023 and as such the course is subject to change prior to commencement in 2023.

Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education (Primary)

The course has been designed to meet the needs of all involved in the area of web-based teaching and learning, including teachers, education officers and training and development personnel, across all professions. The course content and experiences are developed within the context of each individual&#39;s specific needs and circumstances, providing advanced knowledge and skills in digital and web-based teaching and learning. This course is delivered fully online and involves a range of individual and collaborative learning activities. Assessment includes opportunities to tailor requirements to individual needs.Note: Full time study is only available to candidates who commence in Trimester 1.

The study of English and its use is a central focus in countries such as Australia. This subject has been designed to explore how the English language is used in personal, community, academic and professional contexts while you gain insights into language use in a multicultural and plurilingual society. It will enhance your ability to adapt to a variety of changing workplace and social contexts. You will develop knowledge and understanding about language development, a social view of language and varieties of spoken and written English and examine how spoken and written language combine with other ways of making meaning in multimodal texts. You will apply your understanding of informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment strategies to your own language and literacy skills and needs. You will apply this social view of language when working with a range of texts.

Quality teaching, informed by the best available evidence, helps children develop their number sense from the early years of schooling. To effectively educate students as they navigate numeracy in primary school, teachers need to be able to demonstrate personal content knowledge of the three strands of mathematics content in the NSW syllabus: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Studying this subject, you will become familiar with the content of the mathematics taught in primary school. This subject will encourage you to recognise and analyse the developmental nature of mathematics.

Teaching for cultural diversity is becoming a prevalent and complex issue in Australian schools. Studying this subject will equip you with a combination of theoretical knowledge, skill development and research opportunities, and will help you to develop a solid understanding of the issues surrounding the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students.   You will apply your critical thinking skills to examine the impact of cultural assumptions and biases in teaching students for whom English is an additional language or dialect (EAL/D students). Additionally, you will investigate the rationale for current multicultural education, anti-racism, and EAL/D policies and related programs; and demonstrate strategies for culturally and linguistically inclusive teaching practice.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy for EAL/D Students

As a teacher, you need to deliberately plan for teaching behaviours that support learning in your classroom.  This subject explores processes for providing multi-tiered systems of support for behaviour and gives you some insight into evidence-based strategies for students with disabilities, learning difficulties or giftedness in your classroom. There are times when more intense intervention is needed to reduce the significant challenging behaviours. This course will help you recognise, assess and respond to the needs of every student.  Learn how to articulate clear and appropriate learning goals for your classes and design positive behaviour plans for groups of students.  Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Special Education (Primary)/Bachelor of Disabilities Studies will complete 20 days of professional experience in a special school, special education unit or an inclusive school environment.

Positive Behavioural Support (Special and Inclusive Education)

In this subject you will be introduced to the concept of twice exceptionality; where a student is gifted and they are also living with a disability. The subject will investigate the many ways that twice exceptionality may manifest, such as: giftedness and specific learning disabilities, giftedness and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and giftedness and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There will be a focus on the way in which a student’s giftedness can mask their disability, and the way their disability can mask their giftedness. The paradoxical needs of the 2e student will be considered and strategies for supporting the 2e student will be presented. Reading research and empirical evidence will challenge some of the many myths and misunderstandings that surround this group of children.

In the modern mathematics classroom, individual differences are embraced with an approach that fosters inclusivity, informed by a developmental view of learning. In this subject, you will explore current research across all areas of the mathematics curriculum to understand how to accommodate a variety of learning trajectories. We focus on applying different numeracy teaching strategies and integrating them into an inclusive classroom environment, including providing age-appropriate learning opportunities in mathematics, based on your students’ learning needs and cognitive development, and planning and programming for students with specific needs in the mainstream classroom. This subject enables you to support learning for students across the full spectrum of abilities so that they develop the valuable numeracy skills essential to function in today’s rapidly changing world.

Mathematics for the Inclusive Classroom

Assistive technologies are constantly evolving, allowing teachers to provide a more inclusive education environment for students. Studying this subject will advance your understanding of the characteristics and functions of assistive technology, from low-tech, low-cost devices to high-tech equipment that can help students to achieve their best results. You will analyse ways to select and implement assistive technology to support a variety of needs and contexts and examine theoretical and legal reasons for deploying assistive technology in the classroom. You will also explore ways that assistive technologies can support the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Gain the knowledge and skills you need to teach in Aboriginal and cross-cultural educational contexts.   This comprehensive subject allows you to develop your own awareness and critical thinking skills by exploring the legacies of colonisation and racism in Australia and examining current legislation, policies and strategies that seek to redress their effects.   You will develop an understanding of complex issues of power and authority in teaching-learning relationships, school-community dynamics, lesson planning and implementation, and linguistic and cultural diversity as Aboriginal education continues to evolve. Using multimedia texts and interactive seminars, you will refine, analyse and demonstrate your knowledge and skills in Aboriginal Education.

Aboriginal Education

The Creative Arts plays an important role in primary school classrooms. In this subject you will be learning valuable practical skills and increasing your knowledge base in Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts so that you enter your future Kindergarten to Year 6 classroom with confidence. You will examine the place of the Creative Arts within the school and the wider community, and how the Creative Arts makes a positive contribution to the personal, social and intellectual lives of your future students. In this subject you will learn to plan engaging lessons, how to integrate the Creative Arts in subjects across the curriculum and how to link them directly to curriculum outcomes. You will explore what it means to provide a safe and effective learning environment for your students and you will explore how students learn through the Creative Arts disciplines of Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts.

Creative Arts Key Learning Area

Literacy underpins all learning for children. As a future teacher, it is important that you have a depth of understanding about the wide variability of literacy achievement and the factors that affect literacy achievement in the classroom. In this subject you will examine assessment techniques for determining learning needs in literacy by studying theory and practical learning activities. Teaching and intervention activities that accelerate literacy learning will also be explored. You will be drawing on your knowledge of evidence-based literacy techniques to plan, implement and evaluate intervention strategies for literacy learning. This subject requires you to have contact with children so you can complete the assessment tasks. Requirements for student teachers who have contact with children are the completion of online anaphylaxis training, the completion of an online child protection module and a valid Working With Children Check (WWC).
