The Diploma of Applied Health and Community Support has been developed in consultation with the health, disability, mental health, aged care, social and community service sectors to address significant changes in service models and consumer expectation. The course has also been developed to meet the projected increases in role complexity and workforce demands in these sectors.This course is suited to school leavers pursuing a career in the health, social or community service sectors or those seeking an alternative career choice in health, disability, mental health, aged care or community services. Individuals with vocational qualifications or relevant experience may undertake the course to upskill into roles with additional functional requirements and higher levels of responsibility, and/or to acquire a formal University qualification.The Diploma of Applied Health and Community Support has a focus on applied learning opportunities including working with sector leaders, service consumers, organisations, individuals and communities.Delivered through on-line learning, flexible tutorials, workshops, authentic case studies, individual and community projects, the program is available for full-time and part-time students. Sector experts and service consumers will be actively involved in the development and delivery of the program to ensure that it remains relevant and up-to-date.On successful completion of a Diploma of Applied Health and Community Support, graduates are provided with:<ul><li>an entry point to a career in the health, social and community service sectors;</li><li>an opportunity to accelerate progression within a current job;</li><li>an opportunity for promotion to a new role;</li><li>an opportunity to open up a new career path; or</li><li>articulation into further study.</li></ul>

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

This subject explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The subject will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

Support services, both mainstream and specialised, are adopting contemporary disability practices to enable self-determination, choice and control by people with disability. This subject examines these concepts in both a historical context and in relation to the Disability Royal Commission and the transformational reform agenda of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using a rights-based framework, you will explore themes of power and control, and develop professional skills in facilitating capacity building. This subject will support your skill development in effective communication, advocacy, lobbying and support coordination, and deepen your understanding of the meaning of ‘citizenship’ and how it can be realised in the context of disability.

In this subject, you will consider how individuals, families, and communities understand and experience health and wellbeing. Barriers and enablers of health and wellbeing will be explored, with emphasis placed on vulnerable, marginalised and isolated population groups. You will examine how biological, sociological, cultural, environmental and lifestyle factors determine and shape health and wellbeing across the lifespan. You will also develop an understanding of health literacy, readiness for change, and the importance of effective communication in promoting health and wellbeing.

Research is providing increasing evidence for the positive benefits of engagement with the arts for individual and community wellbeing at all stages of life and can provide a non-pharmaceutical adjunct to health interventions. This subject explores case studies of successful creative arts projects in community settings and discusses appropriate evaluation frameworks for health and wellbeing outcomes. Students will reflect on and evaluate critically a community arts project in their own region and will model the planning and conduct of community arts projects, the development of funding strategies, risk management and ethical conduct, developing creative place-based problem solving through writing a proposal for a project intended to promote health and wellbeing.
