The Bachelor of Criminology at UNE is an inter-disciplinary degree that draws upon areas of study such as criminology, forensic science, law and criminal justice, and the sociology of deviance. Students are able to specialise in a particular major while still choosing a number of core and additional listed subjects that examine criminal law and procedures, policing, punishment, prisons, forensic science, theories of crime, rural crime and juvenile delinquency. The degree also offers students the opportunity to undertake training in research methods, apply theory to practice and investigate geographical differences and inequities within criminal justice in Australia. The degree provides hands-on experience within the criminal justice system through CRIM312 and also through our WorkReady program. Graduates of a Bachelor of Criminology can seek employment in a wide-range of sectors, including: border control, correctional facilities, crime prevention agencies, government and policy agencies, intelligence and security, juvenile justice, police service and welfare.
Graduating students have the subject of their major specialisation within the degree appear on their testamur e.g. Bachelor of Criminology (Policing and Corrections) or Bachelor of Criminology (Criminal Justice).
The Bachelor of Criminology is concerned with understanding social constructions of crime and criminality. It provides graduates with a unique opportunity to develop both theoretical and practical skills and an understanding of criminology within a local and international context.

This foundation unit provides you with an introduction to the organisation, policies, practices and institutions that constitute the Australian Criminal Justice System. Broadly, this unit takes a scholarly and criminological approach towards the Australian Criminal Justice System. You will be investigating the substantial areas of the justice system including policing, court structures, the Rule of Law, the role of the coroner, sentencing and punishment, transnational policing, wrongful convictions, forensic expert witnesses, crime prevention and case studies. The unit is delivered through a combination of traditional and problem-based teaching methods. The unit provides you with a foundation for study in criminology and the social sciences more generally.

Get to know the Australian criminal justice system. You’ll explore key institutions including the courts, the coroner, and the police. Study approaches to crime prevention and wrongful conviction. Step through the practices of sentencing and punishment.

This unit provides you with a conceptual and empirical overview of crime in rural and regional communities in Australia and around the world. It explicitly explores how aspects of cultural geography and locational context impact upon the types, incidences and responses to crime and access to related services. You will explore a range of topics including family violence; drug and alcohol use; law and order politics; policing and crime prevention; farm crime; environmental crime; justice and Indigenous peoples; access to justice; and youth crime, amongst others.

Crime in Rural Communities

When you work professionally in the field of criminology, it is crucial that you have confidence and experience making real-world decisions for real world situations. This professional practice subject exposes you to real industry problems within the criminal justice system. In collaboration with a broad range of industry partners, you will be provided with a working brief project to problem-solve these industry challenges. The subject also introduces you to a range of employment skills and the development of professional tools suitable for working within a profession involving criminology. This is a hands-on project-based subject with industry links already established by the subject coordinator.

Professional Practice in Criminology

Our understandings and perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system are largely informed by the media and popular culture. This subject investigates how media representations shape public opinion, political policy and criminal justice practices. Students will assess mainstream and alternative sources of media and how these differing sources present and challenge key crime stories. The emerging role of social media will occupy a key role in the subject, including the use of social media by: police to solve crimes and connect with the community, citizens to broadcast state violence and vigilante collectives (such as &#39;Anonymous&#39;) to present perceived failures of justice.

Crime, Media and Culture

Criminal networks extend across the globe and crimes like drug trafficking, kidnapping, human trafficking, human slavery, counterfeit goods, goods smuggling, piracy, cyber-attacks, the stolen art trade, the trading of exotic animals, and other criminal activities have the potential to have far reaching consequences. In this subject you will examine crime and its control in a global and transnational context. You will analyse crimes that cross national borders, new forms of organised crime, and crimes committed by nation states. You will compare diverse cultural definitions of criminal conduct, systems of law, police, courts, and corrections between different countries. A range of cross-national data sets and measures of crime and social control will also be considered.

Transnational and Organised Crime

Understanding a wide array of criminological perspectives is important when examining the problems of crime and justice. This subject explores the emergence and evolution of criminological theory, and the ways in which crime has been and is in contemporary time defined, constructed and regulated. From traditional to emerging perspectives, you will study the practical application of these ideas. Considering theory in practice, you will question how and why crime is understood, policed and punished. As you critically examine popular conceptions of crime and criminality, you will be learning independent skills in criminology that will contribute to life-long application in a professional career in the field.

Criminological Perspectives

This subject focuses on how we research crime and the criminal justice system. You will learn about the research practice and process, and explore the difficulties associated with conducting ethical criminology research. You will also build your knowledge around qualitative and quantitative methods. You will apply this knowledge and the research techniques to the development of a criminological research project and identify the procedures needed to negotiate research access to individuals, communities, institutions and data.

Researching Crime

When a crime occurs, there are typically two parties involved: the offender and a victim. In the past, the field of criminology often ignored the victim, however in the last few decades victims have been given renewed attention. In this subject, you will be introduced to the area of victimology by exploring various issues and discussions such as: the history of victimology; the rise of victim movement; the nature and extent of criminal victimisation; the victimisation of specific groups; the consequences of victimisation; the relationship between the victim and criminal justice system; and the victim&#39;s rights in the criminal justice system. The subject aims to provide you with a better understanding of where victims fit (and the role they play) in the criminal justice system and in the field of criminology more broadly. The subject will be relevant to you if you are seeking work, or aiming to future proof your career, in the criminal justice and legal system, human services (including social work) or the healthcare system.

Victimology

Deviance - the breaching of social judgements or norms - is a universal and ubiquitous phenomenon, fundamental to studies in sociology and criminology. We all make social judgements and we are all judged by others but such judgements are relative and constructed. Different societies, subcultures and even individuals have different views on what is right and wrong; and the kinds of behaviours, beliefs and bodies that are labelled as &#39;deviant&#39; depend upon their historical, social and cultural context. In this subject you will explore the social construction of deviance in relation to gender, sexuality, race, bodies, minds, drug use and violence, and you will learn to use the concept of deviance as a means of critically analysing society.

Deviance

In every society there are acts or omissions that constitute crimes and it is crucial that we understand the nature and consequences of crime. In this introductory subject you will learn about a range of issues, including the problematic nature of defining crime and the impact of the media when it comes to explaining criminal behaviour. You will explore how knowledge of crime is developed and the role of theory in explaining crime. You will also investigate forensic science and the criminal justice system. You will explore different types of crimes that are impacting upon our society, including crimes against morality; cyber, corporate and white-collar crime; violent and property crime; and youth crime.
