This is a level one subject, which examines law and legal issues as sites of contest where conflicting interests, understandings and agendas come into play. The insights and methods of the social sciences are used to explore law&#39;s interconnection with cultural, economic and political contexts as well as its role in constituting social relations within and across communities. Attention is focused upon three key overarching areas: law, legal consciousness and social order; crime, criminalisation and justice; and global experiences of &#39;the rule of law.&#39; Included within each of these is consideration of key concepts and contemporary issues of local and global significance. This subject considers how citizens, states and the law advance and sometimes impede cross cultural understanding, equality and human rights. This subject includes lives sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject examines competing accounts of violence in the academic research, mass media, and everyday conversation. It asks why the news media focuses on extreme cases of violence, and how this produces social panics around particular problems while concealing other more serious issues. It shows how patterns of everyday talk about violence cause people to worry about specific risks to their safety and not others, and why anxieties about violence often lead to demands for certain kinds of law enforcement. The subject explores how accounts of violence in even non-scholarly cultural forms like films and television series, are actually based on complex underlying theories of psychology and society. Even in apparently neutral and objective academic research, it reveals a range of unrecognised assumptions that shape how we understand the world. The subject includes a focus on violence and gender, examining changing ways of understanding sexual and intimate-partner violence, and exploring issues of masculinity and violence.This is a level 3 subject. In this subject, you will become familiar with the basic principles and tools used to plan and carry out research focused on Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies. Objectives include: Learning what makes socio-legal and criminological research distinctive; how to write research proposals; how to create a literature review; how to critique scholarly work; how to create and develop an original argument; and how to select suitable research methods to test it (including a selection of qualitative and quantitative research methods typically used in socio-legal and criminological research). Students will analyse the concept of &#39;victim&#39; within domestic and international contexts, utilising practical and theoretical understandings of victimisation. Four key variables (gender, age, race and class) are investigated to expand student understandings of who and what constitutes an &quot;ideal victim&quot; within the media and the courtroom. The subject also examines the impact of victim&#39;s rights discourses in shaping traditional and alternative responses to crime and punishment. The concept of &#39;victim&#39; will be further explored to consider the ways in which some groups might be victimised by the law, including Indigenous Australians, injured workers, and asylum seekers. Students will also deconstruct the concept of &#39;victimhood&#39; and determine the extent to which it is useful in legal and social settings.This is a level 2 subject. Victimology: Victims, Justice and the Law

This subject explores the processes, practices and complexities involved in sentencing and imprisoning people in contemporary Australia and how these reflect and reproduce forms of social inequality. The aims of sentencing, the technical processes involved, and public perceptions of them are considered and assessed, as well as technological innovations and human experiences in the courtroom. Varying types of sanctions are examined with particular attention paid to current issues in imprisonment, including high rates of remand, prison architecture, and private interests in prison operations and expansion. The subject places Australian penal cultures in international context, and assesses the extent to which imprisonment can reduce cycles of crime and social disadvantage, and enhance community safety.This is a level 2 subject. This subject discusses the history, institutional configuration, role and performance of police in Australia&#39;s democratic political context, and offers points of comparisons to other countries (democratic or else) around the world. To these ends, we explore a variety of questions concerning the police and its role in our criminal justice system; the relevance of policing for a democratic society; police culture; the links between police and community; contemporary challenges of policing (including transnational policing),among other relevant aspects of police and policing. After completing this course, students should be able to understand fundamental facts about police and policing, and critically evaluate the police&#39;s role in Australia and beyond.This is a level 2 subject. Law, Justice and Power is the core subject for second year students undertaking a major in Crime, Justice and Legal Studies. This subject investigates how power works and the ways justice is experienced within and beyond the law. While you will be provided with a general understanding of a range of legal institutions and processes, you will also consider the limitations and possibilities of law as a practice. Case studies include trials and court buildings, restorative justice, sexual offence law, therapeutic jurisprudence, kaleidoscopic jurisprudence, riots, human rights and royal commissions. You are invited to explore how law, as a range of social, political and cultural systems, exercises and regulates power while it administers and inhibits justice.This is a level 2 subject. In this online, level two subject, students will acquire an understanding of the complexities surrounding drugs and drug use in contemporary Australia. The subject addresses: the classification and effects of licit and illicit substances; the development and nature of contemporary drug distribution networks; major approaches to regulating drugs and drug use; and the key debates and challenges involved in formulating policy and practice in this area. Specific topics we will explore include: alcohol and other drug consumption patterns among young people; pill testing debates; the rise of online illicit drug markets; drug court models; drug education; decriminalisation and legalisation efforts; ongoing tensions around how to regulate vaping; performance and image-enhancing drugs, and contemporary debates around harm reduction strategies (e.g. medically supervised injecting facilities). No pre-existing knowledge is required, but students will be urged to examine any assumptions or moral judgements they hold about the &#39;right&#39; way to approach the &#39;drug problem&#39;. A key theme in this subject is exploring how the framing of such problems - through various social, political, cultural, and economic lenses - shapes how we then respond to them, and that even well-intentioned policies can have unintended adverse outcomes.Please note this Winter Term subject is entirely asynchronous (meaning no live lectures or tutorials). Students must have completed a minimum of 60 credit points of Level 1 subjects to enrol.In 2024, this subject will commence on June 10 and the final assessment will likely be due around July 21. However, it is possible to submit this before the deadline and thus complete the subject slightly earlier.

Where did the modern prison and detention centre come from? In this subject you will explore how present day imprisonment practices are part of a long tradition that includes workhouses, asylums, missions and reserves, juvenile reformatories and internment camps. We investigate how, in varying domestic and international contexts, imprisonment and other forms of confinement have been justified and used as a response to social problems and political conflicts. We reflect upon the implications of this for the individuals and communities most affected, and how prisons and detention centres shape society more broadly. The relationship between borders, colonisation and imprisonment is also considered, raising questions about power, human rights and the role of states in a globalised world. This is a level 1 subject.
