This subject examines strategies for changing criminal behaviour. The interventions explored in the subject are most frequently observed within the correctional system in both custodial and community settings; however, programs utilised in other sectors of the criminal justice system (i.e. police, courts) and in affiliated social service organisations are also included in the course where forensic populations are their target treatment group. The subject draws on psychological principles and research evidence, linking theories of crime causation to foundations of behaviour modification and propensity-reducing interventions. A review of specific programs is presented, although the focus of the subject is on the overarching design principles associated with positive client outcomes.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Draw on psychological principles and research to identify strategies to change behaviour within the correctional system. Probe specific rehabilitation programs used in both in community and institutional settings to question the rehabilitation ideal.

Interventions for Correctional Clients

Some people are more likely to commit particular crimes than are other people. Some people are more likely to become victims of crime than are other people. This subject of study explores variables that relate to victims and offenders. Serial victims and serial offenders are examined. Sexual crimes, violent crimes and family violence will be spotlighted and evidence relevant to victims, offenders and the decisions that they make will be assessed. Students will explore the methodological challenges associated with researching victims and offenders, and consider how the research evidence can translate to good practice within criminal justice contexts.

Historically, the police, policing and law enforcement has been a localised function reflecting the customs, practices and traditions of an identifiable community, in this case Australia. The fact there are less than 10 policing organisations in the western world with more than 10,000 police (NSW Police Force being one) that police a population in the millions,  is rare. Modern policing in Australia now addresses multiple crime types and government policy perspectives. This subject provides students with the opportunity to critically reflect upon the role of the police, how policing and law enforcement exist and how it is influenced by in social systems, legal systems, economic development, conflict and globalisation of crime. As part of that understanding, State based policing, national policing and their relationship to international policing and policy will be explored.

Look at the for-profit private security industry by examining methods, decision makers and stakeholders. You’ll analyse the working partnerships with the public, police and the wider law enforcement industry.  

Australia's Approach to Law Enforcement

This subject was previously known as Making Sense of Criminal Justice.This subject identifies, examines and evaluates current and emerging policies and structures of the criminal justice system. It focuses on debates and problematic issues in the provision of criminal justice. Components of the system are examined in terms of fairness, justice and effectiveness. The extent to which the Australian system is effective in maintaining maximum levels of social harmony is explored. Alternative models of criminal justice are critically examined within the context of liberal-democratic society.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Examine the principal components of the criminal justice system and question the competing tensions of fairness, justice and effectiveness in a liberal-democracy. Identify emerging issues and analyse the response of allied systems to selected crimes.

Making Sense of the Criminal Justice System

This course examines the trafficking dimension of modern slavery. This is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threats or coercion, for the purpose of exploitation. Focal points of the course are ways to prevent and combat trafficking, protect and assist its victims, and promote cooperation.

Policing Human Trafficking

This subject was formerly known as PICX953 Simulation in IntelligenceThis subject provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gain throughout their program of study to a real world crisis. By participating in a dynamic simulation, students will be required to solve problems and find solutions to real world challenges. Students will be assigned to an executive team that includes students with different skill sets and knowledge. These executive teams may include strategists, intelligence analysts, criminologists, counter terrorism experts, and cyber security analysts. Students enrolled in Simulation in Intelligence will perform the role of the intelligence analyst. Their mission will be to formulate solutions by employing the academic, research, analysis and workplace skills they acquired throughout their program. In particular, they will be required to use their knowledge of intelligence analytical techniques –including Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield, Center of Gravity Analysis – to provide detailed assessments of the evolving situation/scenario. They will also be responsible for the intelligence sections of ministerial briefing papers that each group will have to provide as part of their assessment tasks. The student will be required to make policy recommendations based on his assessment of the situation.

Simulation in Intelligence

The subject was formerly known as PICX862 The Crimes of the PowerfulThis subject examines crimes committed by powerful individuals and institutions: white collar crimes, corporate crimes and state crimes. From the Nazi death camps of WWII, to the Bhopal and BHP Gulf oil spill environmental disasters of more recent decades, the most harmful crimes are not those committed by offenders on the &#39;street&#39;, but rather by individuals and organisations occupying the most influential and privileged positions in our societies. This unit reorients the criminological gaze upwards, away from traditional street offenders and towards the most powerful criminals who occupy corporate boardrooms, parliaments and military organisations. Students will explore contemporary examples of each of these types of offence, examine the characteristics of powerful offenders, and address why crimes of this magnitude often go unaddressed by both contemporary criminologists and our systems of criminal justice.

Gaze back at some of the most powerful and criminal individuals and institutions. Categorise types of crime, such as white collar and state crime. Study notorious offenders and criminal acts, including the BHP oil spill and Nazi death camps.

The Crimes of the Powerful

This subject is previously known as PICX849 Cyber Policing and Intelligence in AustraliaCyberspace has become a major site for different forms of warfare and coercion, ranging from cyber disruption, through information compromise, all the way to covert information operations on a national level. In this unit students learn how robust cyber intelligence can be used to enhance the often-reactive posture of cyber security. This includes understanding the role of cyber intelligence and counterintelligence within the broad, integrated configuration of cyber-security. Students will learn fundamental intelligence collection and analysis principles and apply them to a cyber-security context.

Examine cyber policing from an intelligence-led policing perspective by looking at cybercrime, jurisdictions and extradition, information sharing, collaboration and cyber policing challenges

This subject is previously known as PICX848 Applied Cyber Security.
In today’s world, organisations must be able to protect and defend against threats in cyberspace. This subject provides a solid understanding of the theory and practice used to manage information security on computer systems and networks. Students will be exposed to multiple cyber security technologies, processes and procedures, learn how to analyse threats, vulnerabilities and risks present in these environments, and develop appropriate strategies to mitigate potential cyber security problems. Topics include: an overview of computer and communications security, risk assessment, human factors, identification and authentication, access controls, malicious software, software security and legal and ethical issues. Students will have the opportunity to use tools and software commonly used to attack/protect networks  in order to develop workplace skills. .

This subject is previously known as PICX845 Intelligence Theory and Practice.This unit exposes students to the diverse theories and/or theorems of intelligence as well as the different areas of intelligence and to intelligence process methodologies in a variety of contexts.and practice. It discusses the essential characteristics of intelligence systems and examines how the intelligence function fits within a dynamic national or international security context, situating the intelligence function within the Law Enforcement, Foreign, National Security and Military domains. The unit examines the Australian and selected international and other Western intelligence communities.as well as premier non-Western intelligence communities such as China, Russia, and other regions.

Recognise how the intelligence function sits within the dynamic contexts of national security, law enforcement, military and foreign domains. Compare Australian and selected international intelligence communities.
