This subject introduces students to the disciplines of criminology and criminal justice. It begins with an examination of the nature of crime and how it is defined and measured in contemporary society. The subject then provides an overview of the impact of criminological theories on our understanding of crime problems and the implications for criminal justice responses. A major part of the subject is focused on the dimensions of crime and the way crime is shaped by a range of personal and social characteristics. For example, we explore the relationship between crime and social class, the links between age and crime, the relationship between gender and crime, and the reasons for the substantial over-representation of Indigenous people in all parts of the criminal justice system in Australia. Importantly, the subject also explores the main criminological theories that have shaped how we understand why crime occurs, which have direct implications for how we respond to and reduce crime. These theories include structure and process theories, individual difference theories, and meaning making theories.

Examine crime and the ways it’s defined and explained in contemporary society. Study the relationship between crime and class, youth and crime (and the response), gender and crime, and the over-representation of Indigenous people.

This subject provides an overview of the various areas within the criminal justice system in which frontline workers come across people with mental disorders. It examines the way in which the criminal justice system (including police, court, and correctional staff) deals with individuals with mental disorders. In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

This subject is a critical introduction to the Australian legal system that addresses the operation, aims, and institutions of criminal justice. It equips students with foundational knowledge of the operation of criminal justice and how the legal system addresses basic questions of criminological and sociological importance. The subject addresses the relationship between crime and law in Australia; the making of laws by the Parliament and Courts; venues and methods of legal adjudication and interpretation; and the complex interactions between actors that comprise the legal system, including lawyers, police, magistrates and the media. The sustainability of the legal system is evaluated in its historical, ethical, economic and social context.

Introduction To The Australian Legal System

This subject offers undergraduate students an introduction to evidence-based policing, and it puts key principles into practice. It serves as an introduction to the terminology, ideas and scientific method associated with evidence-based policy and outlines the existing policing applications. Introductory weeks summarize the origin and goals of evidence-based policy. The subject eases students through a range of practical weekly modules and answer questions that people have about evidence-based practice. For example, what does good science look like? How do I find reliable research on police tactics and strategies? How do I evaluate research on the police? How do you design a good experiment in policing? The subject provides a practical guide for reading and using existing research in policing, but also a roadmap for developing one&#39;s own evaluation. The final weeks discuss concerns around evidence-based policing and explore what is in the future for this emerging field. The subject is designed to deliver essential content for policing students and professionals alike.

Evidence-Based Policing, Policy and Practice

This subject provides a critical reflection on issues currently facing First Nations peoples, in Australia and globally, in achieving justice. Students will be exposed to Indigenous perspectives on justice through Indigenous-authored research that allows the lived experiences of First Nations people to be heard. Using a strengths-based approach, the course provides students to consider the intersections of history, culture and justice in the ways we have responded and should respond to crime.

First Nations and Justice

In this subject, students will examine a particular issue in the criminal justice system: the role of the victim. To do this, students will gain an understanding of the role and characteristics of crime victims, how victims interact (or not) with the criminal justice system, and the differential impacts of victimisation experiences. Students will then apply this knowledge to assessing initiatives to recognise victim suffering and enhance victim support. Issues of inequality and rights will be central themes to understanding victims and their experiences.

Victims and Justice

This subject was previously known as Police, Courts and Corrections.Police, Courts and Corrections explains the processes that govern the way crimes are investigated, tried, and punished. The course begins with an overview of the aims and functions of the criminal justice system with consideration for the laws and justice principles that underpin it. It then examines the roles and functions of the police, courts and corrective services and the process through which a criminal case progresses through the system, concluding with some reflections on alternatives to traditional practice. Throughout this course, consideration is given to understanding the powers, responsibilities and accountabilities of key criminal justice actors as well as the application of justice principles within the system. The course particularly references the Queensland criminal justice system, however general principles are common to all Australian systems.

Police, Courts and Criminal Law

This foundation unit provides you with an introduction to the organisation, policies, practices and institutions that constitute the Australian Criminal Justice System. Broadly, this unit takes a scholarly and criminological approach towards the Australian Criminal Justice System. You will be investigating the substantial areas of the justice system including policing, court structures, the Rule of Law, the role of the coroner, sentencing and punishment, transnational policing, wrongful convictions, forensic expert witnesses, crime prevention and case studies. The unit is delivered through a combination of traditional and problem-based teaching methods. The unit provides you with a foundation for study in criminology and the social sciences more generally.

A review of specific rehabilitation programs, in institution and community settings, is presented. A critical assessment of the rehabilitation ideal, in terms of ethical, theoretical and practical concerns, is undertaken.
