In this subject, you will examine chronic conditions with emphasis on issues pertaining to the management of these conditions at a community level. There will be a concentration on theories and constructs relevant to healthy self management and effective social support for those living with chronic conditions. The content of the subject includes a presentation of the World Health Organization&#39;s classification systems relevant to disability (ICIDH - The International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps, ICF - International Classification of Functioning) and an illustration of the application of this framework to chronic illness conditions across the life-span. This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second or third year.

Living with Chronic Conditions

In this subject, you will develop the core knowledge for enhancing wellbeing and promoting flourishing in group settings. Through exposure to evidence-based literature on topics such as positive emotions, mindfulness, autonomy support, motivation and resilience you will learn how to create positive environments for individuals, teams and organisations. You will also learn the counselling and communication skills required to promote wellbeing and flourishing within these environments. Specifically, you will learn how to work with groups and deliver core counselling skills and strategies within a motivational interviewing and acceptance and commitment therapy framework.  This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second or third year.

Positive Wellbeing and Counselling for Groups

This subject focuses on the development and implementation of public health policy, including healthy public policy. You will develop skills to participate competently in problem identification and framing, policy development, analysis, advocacy, implementation and evaluation. Key themes are: What is policy? How and when is policy formulated? Who is involved in policy and why? How is policy implemented and monitored? How is policy analysed, reviewed, evaluated and improved? Various theories and frameworks used to explain the policy making process will be introduced. Institutional and broader systems, and structures that influence health policy making will be examined. Particular attention will be given to investigating contemporary environments for policy making, including policy and political, commercial, and broader global environments, and the use of advocacy, evidence and policy instruments such as legislation and regulation. You engage with topical case studies that illustrate key policy issues throughout the subject.

Public Health Policy

The practice of case management is a common approach used to respond to both offenders and victims in the criminal justice system, as well as people who are accessing services or support from Families and Community service providers. Globally, case management is used in relation to a broad range of people. For example, case managers may work specifically with youth at risk, sexual offenders, victims of family violence, people with addiction, homeless people, released prisoners etc. You will learn about the different risk-assessment, decision-making, referral tools that are used in case management and apply these tools to assessment tasks whilst being guided by the theory, principles, legislation and policies that are employed for case management in Victoria. Additionally, you will gain important skills in relation to communication, client assessment and the creation of case management plans in alignment with best practices.

Justice and Community Case Management

This subject will allow you to develop an understanding of professional healthcare delivery in Australia. Areas of professional healthcare delivery that will be examined include; population health and prevention, general practice and community health; emergency health services and hospital care; mental health, rehabilitation and palliative care. You will review and analyse the overall health of Australia&#39;s population and investigate the diverse roles of a range of health professionals in the delivery of healthcare. You will develop critical reasoning skills through relevant case scenarios which introduce enquiry-based learning and teamwork. This subject will support the development of foundation academic skills and information literacy required for successful university study. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students.

Healthcare in Australia

In this subject, you will explore autism, covering a combination of scientific/research, lived experience, and applied perspectives. You will explore the changing views on autism, from the first proposed accounts to contemporary understandings. You will consider the different presentations of autism, Autistic people&#39;s lived experiences, and the different support needs of Autistic people and their families across the lifespan – from very early infancy, through childhood and adolescence, and into adulthood. You will develop broad knowledge of autism, including the early signs, diagnostic criteria and tools, and a range of supports for different needs and life stages. You will explore attitudes and perspectives on autism, locally and abroad, including community perspectives, media representation, and government policy. You will develop essential skills for critically evaluating the wealth of information on autism and the ability to communicate evidence-based information on autism to varied audiences.

Understanding and Support for Autism

In this subject you will focus on the practical skills used in development work. Guest speakers from various agencies share their experiences of the development field, providing you with an opportunity to draw on professional expertise. The subject is organised around the idea of the &#39;development project&#39;. You are introduced to key development tools, processes and debates surrounding the implementation of development projects. On completion you will be familiar with grant proposal writing, practical tools used in development, and with debates about the best forms of development intervention. In this subject, you will develop and deploy a tool kit of practical techniques and strategies to address sustainability and development challenges that transcend borders, in culturally aware ways that promote community agency and social cohesion. You are encouraged to explore a particular region of interest, for example, Latin America, Africa, Asia or the Pacific. This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Development in Practice

This subject introduces you to historical and contemporary approaches to and perspectives on sustainable international and community development. Weekly topics will provide an opportunity for you to critically debate evolving contemporary development perspectives on global issues such as poverty, sustainability, justice, social change and community, as well as question the relevance of concepts such as &#39;overseas&#39; development assistance, capacity-building, and participatory development . The subject enables you to understand and question the dynamics of change in the development sector and the generation and effective management of new ideas about &quot;making development matter&quot;. Through collaboration and effective communication you will further development their creativity in resolving complex development challenges and their capacity to apply theory, locate and synthesise knowledge resources, prioritise meaningful action, and manage associated risks.

Making Development Matter

In this subject, you will develop intermediate levels of communicative competence in Auslan in the areas of both receptive and production skills. You will look at differences and similarities in both Auslan and English, and will also discuss current and past medical approaches and challenges had by the deaf community. This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Australian Sign Language 2A

In this subject, you will continue to develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. You will be introduced to key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural, social context and begin to understand the history of Auslan and the deaf community. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations. This is a level 1 subject. Please note the prerequisite requirement for enrolling in this subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
