To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. In Australia, and around the globe, there is strong demand for skilled and qualified counsellors across a wide range of occupations relating to social support, disability services, and mental health.This program equips students with knowledge and skills in counselling, together with an understanding of the ethical, legal, and professional issues in relation to the practice of counselling required for employment in a range of counselling roles.Students will develop an understanding of the social, cultural, and developmental context in which counselling occurs and of a range of therapeutic approaches appropriate to a range of client ages, needs and circumstances.

Support services, both mainstream and specialised, are adopting contemporary disability practices to enable self-determination, choice and control by people with disability. This subject examines the evolution of disability practice with particular emphasis on the reforms arising from the Disability Royal Commission and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using a rights-based framework, you will explore themes of participation and inclusion and develop professional skills in effective communication, advocacy, support coordination and capacity building.

Contemporary Disability Practice

In this subject, you will be introduced to the diverse fields in which social work practice takes place. The subject aims to extend common understandings of social work practice by showcasing new and innovative approaches to practice at micro, meso, and macro levels. Using a critical perspective, you will explore each field of practice (group or community) and the context in which it is situated. You will also learn how workers can contribute to decolonising and Indigenising agendas within different organisational settings. As an emerging social worker, this subject encourages you to situate yourself within the profession as you begin to develop your social work identity. If you are someone interested in pursuing a career in social work or learning about what social workers do, this subject offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and first-hand experience of the profession.

Fields of Practice in Social Work

This subject aims to provide a broad understanding of the key leadership functions of organisational and clinical governance, and risk management within health and human services. These concepts have grown in significance across health and human services - driven by the need for assurance from the public, providers, funders, accreditation agencies, and governments, that services are delivered safely and that they meet organisational and quality standards.This subject begins with an introduction and overview of the concepts of governance, risk and risk management, including relevant conceptual and theoretical frameworks. You will explore the practical implementation of governance and risk management frameworks and strategies with an emphasis on real-world application of best practice, empowering you to lead initiatives and to drive positive change in your workplace by fostering a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement. You will be challenged to reflect on your own professional practice and leadership capacity, as you gain insights into how effective governance and leadership approaches can shape the rapidly evolving health and human service landscape.

Risk Management and Governance

This subject explores the interconnected domains of health policy, law, ethics, strategy and financial management, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to navigate complex health and human service environments. You will evaluate policy initiatives, critically analyse legal and ethical challenges, and apply strategic and financial principles to lead organisational, community and system improvements. Emphasising a work-integrated-learning approach, the subject will guide you to apply theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence to real-world challenges within your workplaces, building your capability to make informed decisions and to lead with impact in a rapidly evolving context. Through a deepening of your reflective leadership practice and collaborative problem-solving skills, you will also develop strategies to address professional, organisational, and community issues, fostering resilient systems and a commitment to ongoing leadership development.

Management in Health and Human Services

This subject engages students with the primary research literature in policies and systems focused on meeting the needs of people with dementia. Factors such as budget, access, equity and culture are considered in appraising the approaches taken by governments and administrations worldwide, which are evaluated in terms of meeting the specific needs of individuals and countries as a whole. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of written MyContext assignments requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Policies and Systems in Dementia 2

This subject engages students with the primary research literature dealing with factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. Community strategies and social programmes focused on supporting healthy autonomous life for people with dementia, are examined in the context of personal experience and social outcomes, building a knowledge base aimed at evaluation of evidence from the primary research literature. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Health and Social Care in Dementia 2

In this subject, you will learn the principles of culturally respectful, safe and trauma informed care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults, including those people with dementia. In the context of the social determinants of health relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, this subject will focus on strength, resilience, and holistic approaches to care provision. Core concepts are drawn from the quality-of-life tool Good Spirit, Good Life, the online Caring for Spirit program, Let’s CHAT (Community Health Approaches To) Dementia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities and Aboriginal women learning on Country. Your study experience has been co-designed with Aboriginal Elders from Llutruwita (Tasmania), the Koori Regions of Victoria and New South Wales, and the Noongar Country of Western Australia. In this fully online subject, you will learn through a variety of learning approaches coupled with authentic assessments.

Culturally Respectful and Safe Care for Aboriginal People with Dementia

This subject focuses on clinical practice within the community and urgent care setting encompassing both primary and secondary health care needs. The subject integrates knowledge from structured clinical examination and diagnostics to inform diagnoses across complex chronic health conditions and those with common, acute or chronic primary health care needs. The subject explores evidence-based approaches to develop management plans and pathways of care in primary, secondary and community health care systems. The subject expands on patient-clinician communication, health literacy considerations, and the impact of social determinants of health while considering contemporary issues surrounding primary, secondary and community health care practice.

Integrated Community Care

This subject will provide an introduction to existing evidence-based research on the benefits of engagement with the arts, through the lifespan and strategies employing creativity to support better ageing and mitigate risk factors for dementia. The subject offers opportunities for students to undertake creative tasks, develop their own creativity and reflect on the cognitive benefits.

Explore how enjoying artistic activities contributes to peoples’ wellbeing and quality of life. Learn how to engage people in imaginative pieces that communicate their thoughts and emotions—and work on your own creative project too!

Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.
