Communication for Health Professionals

Presenting in Public: Writing and Performing for Professional Contexts

If businesses are to survive in an increasingly competitive and information-oriented environment they will need trained managers who can speak, write and interact with others efficiently, effectively and professionally.This subject will define the importance and role of effective communication in a manager&#39;s position and their role in a &#39;learning&#39; organisation. While taking COM211 you will begin to evaluate the structure of an organisation, the role of communication networks and the value and use of communities of practice. You will discuss how to communicate effectively in an increasingly diverse business landscape, evaluate change management strategies, practise communicating and managing change, and managing conflict in the business environment.

The Internet has dramatically changed the way people and organisations communicate, whether for better or worse. For many, online communication through digital and social media is now one of their most significant forms of interaction with others. This subject develops students&#39; understanding of cultural, academic and professional integrity in a business context. Students will reflect on their own cultural background, and consider how this impacts on communication with diverse cultures including Indigenous Peoples. By applying knowledge about global and Indigenous cultures, and ways of working that are respectful, students will develop capability to communicate responsibly and in ways that are aligned with varied audiences. Responsible business practices will be explored, with students examining Indigenous perspectives in global business and how these perspectives should inform business communication and decision making. In this subject you will be introduced to the essential building blocks of language: the sounds and sound systems (phonetics and phonology), how words and sentences are structured (morphology and syntax)and how we understand meaning (semantics). Employing the analytical tools of linguistics, you will begin applying them to the development of a new language of your own imagining. The inspiration will come from a range of human languages, including major world languages, minoritized and endangered languages, and constructed languages.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
