This subject allows health professionals to examine and develop their interpersonal communication skills with people who may be experiencing difficult situations and mental and physical health challenges. The health professional will be able to identify and use both non-verbal and verbal communication skills to engage in discussions with people, patients, their families and friends, in an appropriate way for culturally and linguistically diverse and Indigenous peoples. The introduction of interactive dialogue techniques will provide a broad understanding of communication and negotiation strategies in challenging and high risk scenarios. Communication techniques will also be explored in relation to different modes such as face to face, online, electronic, virtual and telephone. The building of effective communication skills will promote self-awareness, resilience and self-care of the health professional.

Interpersonal Communication

This course will develop students’ skills to describe, interpret and appraise biomedical data and health information. By using practical scenarios and information available in the public domain, students will acquire the knowledge and the communication tools needed to engage with biomedical science-related issues in a range of contexts. They will critically examine how science is being presented in the media, evaluate the quality and integrity of the communication of scientific information presented and critique the appropriateness of the communication to the intended audience. Factors that affect health literacy at the individual and population level and strategies that can mitigate these will be explored.

Scientific Literacy and Communication 

This subject equips you with the skills to produce content and tell stories across a range of media. A variety of digital tools, delivery options and conceptual approaches will be explored as you design, research and produce their content. Academic and technical staff will guide you through the production of journalism, public relations, or creative content suitable for delivery online, and as broadcast and print. Through the subject, you will be expected to develop skills in research, writing, online publication and audio and visual production.

Multiplatform Storytelling

Science communication has an increasingly vital role to play in a modern, global society. The growing awareness of the threat of climate change, along with the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, has highlighted the importance of the effective communication of science. This subject explores the social, political and ethical implications of science communication in a global society, and will consider: science in the media, science and public policy, science and advocacy, and public engagement with science. You will identify, apply and evaluate science communication strategies for diverse audiences using a range of media and technologies. The subject includes a non-compulsory field trip.

Communicating Science

The ability to strategically communicate is a skill required in many industries and sectors. In this subject, you are introduced to a variety of media platforms and approaches to provide a strong foundation for participation in the media and communication industries. You will be introduced to key trends and changes in contemporary media practices, technologies, business models and audience behaviours. A fundamental appreciation of key concepts in media writing will enable you to think strategically about content creation, information gathering and audience engagement, which will equip you to write and pitch a story to a relevant publication. You will gain a deeper understanding of how strategic communication can drive change in a variety of contexts while acquiring important practical skills in professional communication, information management, media engagement and publicity.

Introduction to Strategic Communication

Digital and social media play an increasing role in the contemporary media landscape. In this subject you will develop your knowledge of key concepts, principles, and practices to understand how digital and social media inform a strategic communication environment. The focus of this subject is on developing your knowledge and ability to creatively plan, effectively implement, and critically evaluate the performance of various social media strategies. You will also gain practical skills in digital content creation for various platforms.

Strategic Digital Media

Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) covers the general area of marketing communications with a focus on advertising and promotion at an advanced level. IMC rests upon the management of media and other tools which can be used to deliver marketing messages in an effective and integrated way, while achieving marketing, communications and broader organisational objectives.The subject focuses on an approach to marketing communications that considers how the integration of messages can achieve greatest impact, primarily through the coordinated use of a range of marketing communication tools. In this regard, the subject looks at the creation, selection and execution of consistent marketing messages for an organisation to communicate across its various communication and marketing platforms. An IMC approach considers the strategic use of a range of traditional media, as well as digital and social media. The subject content is placed in the context of more general IMC issues faced by organisations of all sizes including branding, planning, budgeting, coordination and delivery messages, and media management. Students will find that an advanced understanding the complexities of IMC and its various aspects will stand them in good stead for being able to make effective marketing and general business decisions.

Integrated Marketing Communications

Communication Research Skills equips you with foundational knowledge and skills needed to research a range of communication forms, practices, audiences, and institutions. It is comprised of two modules. Foundations (Weeks 1-5) deals with the following topics: using the university library and other information resources; academic writing formats, skills and strategies; effective study practices and habits; and the work contexts and ethics of communication research. Methods (Weeks 6-10) introduces key methodologies used in researching communication texts, practices and users/audiences: semiotic analysis, content analysis, quantitative techniques, and qualitative techniques.

Communication Research Skills

This subject is a postgraduate level introduction to the interdisciplinary practice of Communication Studies. It identifies key features of communication as a field of study: forms of communication; theories and histories of mass communications media; the diverse and evolving field of Australian mass media communications; and media communications issues in 21st century public policy and politics. The subject identifies key communication research traditions and examines their characteristic concepts, themes and issues. Introducing Communication Studies familiarises students with a range of social and cultural issues related to creative and communications industries and technologies.

Introducing Communication Studies

Communication and Public Value deals with how organisations identify, measure and communicate the value of the goods and services they provide. The subject focuses on the concept ‘public value’ and the models used to implement it. Theoretical and practical familiarities with best practice examples enable students to understand why and how the concept is used, the kinds of organisations and activities best able to benefit from it, and its potential for strengthening the relationships between organisations, their partners and publics. Assessment includes an essay on a public value issue and a public value model of your own design.
