To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. This subject introduces you to effective professional communication techniques and practices applicable to the workplace and study. You will learn about the foundations of communication, the various communication styles, professional etiquette, and different types of communication behaviours. A central focus of this subject is for you to understand your own style, and gain an awareness of how you communicate and how others might feel based on how you behave and interact.In addition, you will explore a range of barriers and enablers to effective communication, and develop strategies such as active listening, conflict resolution, and giving and receiving feedback. You will practice, and be assessed on, effective communication in groups and in a simulated environment. This will include participation in role plays, interviewing others, presenting ideas, and completing various group and individual activities. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this unit introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry. The Professional Communication subject is designed to help you develop essential communication skills that are vital for success in any professional setting. While this focuses on enhancing your ability to communicate effectively and professionally, it is not specifically tailored for those looking to improve their English language skills.

Professional Communication

In this subject, you are provided the opportunity to employ skills developed across a range of University Preparation subjects to complete a guided research project. Using techniques in research, analysis, problem-solving, reflection, and academic communication, you will investigate a topic of your choosing, undertake academic investigation of the key issues or challenges involved and, finally, produce an evidence-based analysis and argument expressing your perspective. The research and writing skills developed and practised in this subject apply to a diverse range of disciplinary environments, from the humanities to the sciences.

UPP Project A

Language is what makes us human. It influences our thoughts and affects our lives in even more ways that we might expect. In this advanced subject, students are introduced to the most important and strongly debated issues in the psychology of language. Lecture topics include the distinctive features of human language as a system of communication, language structure, acquisition and development, the understanding and production of speech (and what happens when these processes go wrong), the development of reading and spelling, and how the social and cultural environment can influence how language is used.

Psychology of Language

Students can develop the fundamental written and verbal communication skills necessary for effective communication in both business careers and academic studies in this subject. As such, the focus of it is two-fold; firstly, developing your personal communication skills and secondly, also giving you a better understanding of the significant role of international business communication in the workplace.

International Business Communication

This subject equips you with the skills to produce content and tell stories across a range of media. A variety of digital tools, delivery options and conceptual approaches will be explored as you design, research and produce their content. Academic and technical staff will guide you through the production of journalism, public relations, or creative content suitable for delivery online, and as broadcast and print. Through the subject, you will be expected to develop skills in research, writing, online publication and audio and visual production.

Multiplatform Storytelling

Science communication has an increasingly vital role to play in a modern, global society. The growing awareness of the threat of climate change, along with the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, has highlighted the importance of the effective communication of science. This subject explores the social, political and ethical implications of science communication in a global society, and will consider: science in the media, science and public policy, science and advocacy, and public engagement with science. You will identify, apply and evaluate science communication strategies for diverse audiences using a range of media and technologies. The subject includes a non-compulsory field trip.

Communicating Science

The ability to strategically communicate is a skill required in many industries and sectors. In this subject, you are introduced to a variety of media platforms and approaches to provide a strong foundation for participation in the media and communication industries. You will be introduced to key trends and changes in contemporary media practices, technologies, business models and audience behaviours. A fundamental appreciation of key concepts in media writing will enable you to think strategically about content creation, information gathering and audience engagement, which will equip you to write and pitch a story to a relevant publication. You will gain a deeper understanding of how strategic communication can drive change in a variety of contexts while acquiring important practical skills in professional communication, information management, media engagement and publicity.

Introduction to Strategic Communication

Digital and social media play an increasing role in the contemporary media landscape. In this subject you will develop your knowledge of key concepts, principles, and practices to understand how digital and social media inform a strategic communication environment. The focus of this subject is on developing your knowledge and ability to creatively plan, effectively implement, and critically evaluate the performance of various social media strategies. You will also gain practical skills in digital content creation for various platforms.

Strategic Digital Media

Good communication skills are essential to managing people and organisations. Management Communications will provide students with theoretical understanding of what communication is (hint: communication is everywhere, all the time!), and a range of practical communication skills relevant to managing people and organisations in a variety of contexts.Students will deepen their understanding of key communication models, conduct audiences analysis, select appropriate media (hint: email is not the only nor necessarily the best way to communicate with people), and craft compelling communications suited to a range of issues and contexts.The subject includes individual assessments, group assessments, and peer-review. Peer-review is used to provide students with additional subject-matter feedback (i.e. in addition to what the teaching team provides) as well as the chance to experience (and get better at!) giving and receiving feedback, which are essential communication skills.Workshops will be activity-based, provide time for hands-on learning, group work, presentations, and peer feedback.Management Communications will stretch you, but in a good way. By the time you’ve completed the subject, you’ll be a more confident and competent communicator, equipped with skills to help you effectively manage people and organisations.
