This means you’ll be developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry demands, placing you in good stead for a future career in science-based growth industries, such as fermentation or salmon aquaculture. If you complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Science and wish to continue further study, you can apply for an Associate Degree in Applied Science or Bachelor of Science.

It is a great foundation for those wishing to enter the fermentation industry, or a steppingstone for those currently working in the industry who are seeking to progress in their career.The Undergraduate Certificate in Fermentation aims to prepare graduates to become creative, ethical, adaptable and industry-aware with the skills and knowledge sought after by the fermentation industry. It will also provide a foundation for establishing home-based fermentation activities such as brewing beer, making cheese, and creating a fine wine. The program content has been developed in consultation with industry experts and they are actively involved in its delivery.Completion of the Undergraduate Certificate in Fermentation will enable you to:<ul><li>apply scientific theory in contemporary industry practice</li><li>commence employment or enhance career opportunities</li><li>transition into further study, with credit into an Associate Degree in Applied Science</li></ul>

This subject can provide you with an introduction to chemical principles sufficient to be used as a pre-requisite for first Year chemistry subjects that are part of a chemistry major at the University of Tasmania. It is not designed to be a replacement for Year 12 Chemistry as it only covers topics of direct relevance as a background to the first-year subjects. This subject covers introductory chemistry for students with no previous knowledge of chemistry who intend to study the biological sciences. It does not form part of a Biology major but is taken as an elective subject.This subject explores the basic chemical concepts with a particular focus on biological systems and processes such as bonding and structure of organic molecules, aerobic respiration, ions in physiological systems, nutrient cycles and photosynthesis. Topics include fundamental chemical bonding theory, molecular geometry and interactions, reaction types and equilibria, introductory organic chemistry, and introductory thermodynamics. The laboratory program introduces basic techniques and skills commonly used in chemistry relevant to the biological sciences, along with reinforcing chemical concepts with practical experience. To complete this component of the subject, students must attend to complete a set of laboratory exercises. For students selecting an on-campus mode of study, you must attend fortnightly lab sessions throughout semester and students that have enrolled as a distance student you must attend a laboratory workshop delivered in the last week of semester. Both options are on campus at either the Hobart or Launceston campus.

In this subject, you will acquire and apply foundational knowledge of principles and techniques that underpin applied bio-science industries. During a laboratory workshop you will apply selected techniques for monitoring, measuring, and analysing key parameters relating to biochemistry and water quality in applied science. You will be introduced to a range of topics such as biologically important molecules, biochemical reactions, chemical analysis, states of matter, and acid-base chemistry. You will apply your knowledge to industry industry-based problems and potential solutions. This subject also introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

In this subject you will be introduced to the key steps involved in realizing the manufacture of fermented products for commercial purposes. These include process design and optimization, scale-up and manufacturing operations such as cleaning and sterilization, substrate preparation, inoculum development, fermentation monitoring and control, product recovery/formulation, and the treatment of effluent and disposal of waste. You will complement and extend your understanding of the operations discussed by investigating the process, and science, associated with the commercial production of selected fermentation products, by preparing fermented foods/beverages at home, and by participating in an applied research project or a work-integrated learning experience.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:<ul><li>a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice</li><li>principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios</li><li>reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations</li><li>ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry. Participation in certain types of work integrate learning experiences are contingent on the outcomes of a series of preparatory activities. Some work integrated learning experiences may require travel and/or accommodation at the student&#39;s expense.</li></ul>
