The Graduate Certificate in Accounting is a course that will service the needs of students requiring four or fewer units for accreditation with the professional accounting bodies. It can serve as an entry and exit point for the Master of Professional Accounting. The course comprises four units (that is 24 credit points) and is usually used to supplement existing studies in accounting to satisfy the entry requirements of the professional accounting organisations. Subjects are drawn from the Master of Professional Accounting and may cover introductory as well as advanced units in accounting, finance, systems, law, auditing, economics and business statistics.Please Note: This program can only be studied part time.

Advanced Financial Accounting

This subject examines the fundamental principles of income tax law, including capital gains. You will gain an understanding of the workings and implications of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and cognate legislation such as the Taxation Administration Act 1953 and the Fringe Benefits Tax Assessment Act 1986. This subject will help you to understand the complexities of how taxation law operates – including the working of the goods and services tax under A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999. Taxation Law

This subject is available to non-law students only and provides a comprehensive introduction to the legal principles for commercial associations with an emphasis on corporations. You will explore a wide range of topics including sole traders, partnerships and the law of agency, trusts (discretionary, unit, and hybrid) and joint ventures as well as superannuation entities, the function and structure of companies, corporate governance, member&#39;s rights and corporate liability. Additionally, you will examine corporate finance, takeovers and schemes of arrangement, financial records, financial reporting and audit requirements and companies in distress. In doing so, you will build a broad understanding of the nature and scope of corporation law, as well as your critical thinking and legal reasoning skills.

Principles of Corporation Law

This subject is available to all students, other than Bachelor of Laws students, subject to degree rules.  This subject will introduce you to the legal principles relating to business and commercial relationships and covers a wide range of topics and approaches to examine real-world business law issues.  The subject explores the Australian legal system and business structures, an overview of the law of torts, negligence and negligent misstatement, contracts, consumer law, electronic commerce, finance law and bankruptcy, and insurance law.  In doing so, you will learn how legal principles affect business practice and decision making and apply the knowledge to a wide range of career paths.

Introduction to Business Law

This subject was previously known as Taxation Law.This subject builds upon foundational Australian taxation law knowledge and equips you with an advanced understanding and mastery of the legislation and procedures for tax compliance.  You will examine a range of topics including fringe benefits taxation, goods and services taxation, taxation of superannuation entities and special taxpayers as well as tax losses.  You will also explore issues in tax avoidance and evasion, the ethical and professional obligations of tax advisers and agents and tax administration. In doing so, you will develop your legal reasoning and research skills and be equipped with contemporary skills to meet challenges in a complex and ever-changing field.
