This degree provides an introduction to the planning principles, practices and techniques used by urban and regional planners. Examples and applications draw on local, national and international examples. It can be seen as a stand-alone qualification in its own right, or as the first step towards the Master of Urban and Regional Planning, which is a full professional qualification. It can also provide mid-career training for practising planners. A distinguishing characteristic of the degree is the use of interdisciplinary knowledge and techniques in addressing environmental, social and design issues of concern to the community. It is now widely accepted that successful human settlements must be properly planned and a range of statutory and non-statutory controls exist at all levels of government to protect the public interest in the development process.
The Graduate Certificate in Development Planning offers an alternative pathway into the Master of Urban and Regional Planning for those from a non-related discipline or with only industry experience.

Examine social and economic planning theories, laws and trends and the importance of an integrated approach. Study land development processes, environmental factors and the implications for community sustainability within a governance framework.

This subject introduces students to sources of law affecting building projects (including the judicial system, common and statute law, contract law, torts and dispute resolution) in relation to the various types of contracts available for project delivery. Construction Contracts and Procurement

This theory informed subject aims to synthesise and stretch the students&#39; understanding and application of design methodologies towards speculating on and imagining new visions for the sustainable future. It focuses on extreme, complex and bizarre environments. Philosophical and theoretical readings are explored as other ways of thinking and seeing the world. Sustainable Future and the Built Environment

This subject provides an introduction to principles of interior lighting design and its application techniques in order to develop fundamental specialist knowledge. Interior Lighting Design

This subject introduces the concept of Adaptive Reuse and Heritage, the initiation of sustainable design responses to the adaptive re-use contemporary reuse of historic buildings with minimal impact on the heritage significance. Students will undertake research methods to synthesise knowledge and technical skills in ways that embrace history, and includes indigenous perspectives, in a contemporary context. Adaptive Reuse and Heritage

This subject will provide an introduction to furniture design and its manufacturing processes. It provides a concise overview of the cultural history of furniture design and the design process. Furniture Design

This subject is designed to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of a career in design practice that extends to the transdisciplinary nature of interior design professional practice. Students investigate the role of the interior designer within the complexities of a project and what it means to collaborate professionally with consultants, suppliers and clients. This subject introduces the reality of contemporary professional practice, and allows students to consider and prepare for opportunities for future industry employment. Contemporary local, national and international transdisciplinary realities of Interior Architecture practice are the foci of this subject, which investigates and simulates real-life issues, complexities and opportunities in practice. Interior Architecture Practice 1

This subject was previously known as Residential Construction.
In this subject students will be introduced to the types, components and practices of low-rise domestic construction. In this overview of basic constructional materials used in domestic construction students will apply aspects of applied science to relevant building types by examining the properties of matter, wave motion, heat, light and sound). Students will also evaluate solar effects on buildings. Fieldwork is a component of this subject.

This subject was previously known as Technology of Design.This subject is an introduction to architectural technologies including structural systems and principles, building materials, construction techniques and environmental design and decarbonisation concerns in buildings. Explore the bond between the built, natural and human environment in design. Learn the relationship between structure and technology. Uncover how floor and wall structures and materials impact and transform heating, lighting and acoustic function.

This subject was previously known as Architecture Design 2.This subject explores the sense of place and the notion of inhabitation. It explores the built environment as a representation of collective values, investigates the relationship between ideas, human body and built form, and develops an understanding of primary components of space, form, structure and materials. It refers to and uses communication methods taught concurrently in other subjects. This subject requires students to create new structures for inhabitation at a personal scale that engage well with a given landscape, including solar, wind and sound.
