The course has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.The program will provide you with a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. We offer leading online education, based on the latest research, that is suitable for everyone at any stage of their career.The Dementia specialisation provides a global perspective on the impact of dementia on individuals and societies. It is aimed at health professionals building their expertise in aged care and dementia. The rising prevalence of dementia is creating new challenges and a pressing need for change in the way our systems and practices support people who live with dementia - equip yourself with the expertise to lead transformation, based on the latest evidence.The Dementia specialisation offers a comprehensive understanding of dementia from the perspectives of individuals, families, communities, health care systems and governments. You will explore a range of approaches aimed at supporting people living with dementia to maintain healthy lives and examine the ways that healthcare systems and government policy affect health and social care provision.Once you have completed your specialisation you will select a research pathway of your choice.<ul><li>The Capstone Pathway will develop your research skills as you design and conduct a quality improvement project relevant to your workplace and/or career aspirations.</li><li>In the Research Pathway, you will complete a substantial piece of original, independent research, focussed on the topics that are of particular interest, that provides you with a pathway to a Higher Degree by Research.</li></ul>The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) has been co-designed with major health providers for the health workforce, with content developed to meet the needs of health professionals from all disciplines. The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce.If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate (or higher) you may be eligible for advanced standing into the program.The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice and Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) also articulate directly into the Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation), providing you with a seamless pathway to progress your career in a meaningful new direction and advance practice in your health organisation. This subject engages students with the primary research literature in policies and systems focused on meeting the needs of people with dementia. Factors such as budget, access, equity and culture are considered in appraising the approaches taken by governments and administrations worldwide, which are evaluated in terms of meeting the specific needs of individuals and countries as a whole. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of written MyContext assignments requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Policies and Systems in Dementia 2

This subject engages students with the primary research literature dealing with factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. Community strategies and social programmes focused on supporting healthy autonomous life for people with dementia, are examined in the context of personal experience and social outcomes, building a knowledge base aimed at evaluation of evidence from the primary research literature. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Health and Social Care in Dementia 2

This subject examines the evidence base for, and the potential impact of, community-level initiatives aimed at (1) reducing the incidence of dementia in the general population, and (2) improving quality of life for those living with dementia. These are classed as public health approaches to dementia. The large- scale impact of dementia on societies, both current and forecast, is surveyed, and used to inform an evaluation of effective public health strategies initiatives designed to reduce this impact. Initiatives investigated include community-wide inclusion and support of people living with dementia and their carers, such as dementia friendly communities and environments, and dementia risk reduction efforts. You will be encouraged to develop skills to explain evidence, arguments and advice on dementia support and prevention in a variety of community contexts.

Community and Public Health Approaches to Dementia 1

In this subject, you will explore how policies and systems influence the care and support offered to individuals living with dementia and their care partners. You will analyse national and international strategies, assessing their effects on access, quality and fairness in service provision. Through the content modules and assessment tasks, you will tailor your learnings to your own interests and apply key insights to your personal and professional context. This approach ensures that learning is meaningful and relevant, empowering you to translate theory into practice and make informed contributions within your chosen field.

Policies and Systems in Dementia 1

This subject will enable students to understand and evaluate research and literature in the neurobiology of dementia, and to use and communicate that knowledge in their own personal context. It covers the major elements of the brain and the functions of nerve and glial cells, including neurotransmission, in order to support the understanding of the degenerative processes of diseases that cause dementia, the relationship between genetics, pathology, degeneration, biomarkers and diagnosis, and the basis of therapeutics which affect the central nervous system. A section on the neurophysiology of pain, a significant issue in dementia care, is included.

Neurobiology of Dementia 1

This subject examines social, therapeutic and environmental factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. The impact of dementia on individuals, and provision for the rights and needs of people with dementia, are the focus of the curriculum. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Health and Social Care in Dementia 1

This subject will critically examine the processes and activities to identify, monitor and improve key elements of aged care organisational functioning, within complex health networks. A review and critique of governance arrangements, including accountability and transparency requirements for staff, managers and boards will be undertaken. Requirements for performance metrics, organisational and clinical outcomes and reporting arrangements will be debated. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

This subject will critically assess the knowledge, structures and systems required to effectively govern, organise and manage residential aged care organisations. The aged care sector will be reviewed within the Australian healthcare context, its specific historical trajectory of development and need for reform will be investigated. Governance arrangements incorporating legislation, regulation and systems for aged care organisations will be examined. The challenge of addressing multiple stakeholders and how they interact with each other will be explored. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
