The University of New England offers a flexible approach to the study of law. UNE boasts one of Australia&#39;s largest law schools outside a capital city, as well as being an early adopter of innovative technology in the delivery of its law programs. The Bachelor of Laws (4 year) is designed for people who are new to university study or to the study of law, including school leavers or people who want to change careers or get a qualification.The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions. After completion of academic qualifications in law, there is a range of employment options from which to choose. Graduates who wish to be admitted to practice as a solicitor, barrister or legal practitioner anywhere in Australia will also have to undertake a course of professional legal training (PLT). This can consist of approximately half a year&#39;s full‐time training undertaken internally or externally, or of equivalent part‐time training. In some jurisdictions, it may be possible to do articles of clerkship instead. Because the system adopted varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, enquiries should be made to the admission authority in the state or territory in which you intend to practice; this is usually a committee of the Supreme Court of that State or Territory or a special body set up to administer admissions to the legal profession. Additional information can be found on the <a href="https://www.une.edu.au/about-une/faculty-of-science-agriculture-business-and-law/school-of-law/current-students/legal-profession-admission-board" target="_blank">School of Law page</a>.Please note: students will only be admitted to the full LLB degree upon successful completion of the first four open subjects with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.2.The Bachelor of Laws aims to graduate students who can demonstrate:<ol><li>understanding and knowledge of Australian law and awareness of indigenous, international and theoretical perspectives;</li><li>competence in using legal research and analytical skills that equip them to work in the legal profession or in a broad range of law related occupations;</li><li>the ability to take a strategic approach to problem-solving by applying critical and innovative thinking to complex legal issues and situations;</li><li>competence in oral and written communication;</li><li>the ability to work independently and in groups; and</li><li>professional judgment and knowledge of the ethical responsibilities associated with having completed a law degree.</li></ol>

Bachelor of Laws (4 Years)

Juris Doctor

PLEASE NOTE: From Study Period 4 2025, this will be open to anyone aged 16 years and over.Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.The Bachelor of Commerce is a business qualification designed to help you reach your career potential and prepare you for the changing job market. Your learning experiences will be richly interactive and industry connected, using advanced technologies that develop your decision-making and leadership skills, both of which are essential in a future marketplace.The program starts with a business foundation year, where you will explore value creation in business, learn to use financial information to make informed and responsible decisions, and develop your business intelligence and analytical capabilities to interpret data in a meaningful way.Following on from this, you’ll choose one or two major areas of business in which to specialise and gain expertise, employing learned career management theories to plan your own success.This degree will grow your international business outlook and connect you with the industry. In your final year, you’ll undertake an industry work placement or work on an applied business project, applying your entrepreneurial skills, business ideas and ‘out of the box’ thinking to a real business environment.The Business Law major provides the knowledge and skills relevant to working in business or government. It does not lead to a professional legal qualification allowing admission to practice as a solicitor or barrister, but it does meet the increasing needs of government and industry, for graduates with a background in law and business studies.

Bachelor of Commerce (Business Law)

The Diploma in Paralegal Studies course provides students with the opportunity to complete a course dedicated to preparatory skills and studies in law, regardless of their educational background.This course will be attractive to students who would like to graduate with a diploma by completing 8 units. This course also offers students who wish to continue their studies in law the opportunity to transfer to the Bachelor of Legal Studies or to take advantage of the pathway to a law degree (provided they satisfy the GPA requirement). It will also attract those with a general interest in law and those who wish to study particular areas of law in order to be able to work, for example, as a paralegal or legal secretary.UNE is home to Australia&#39;s largest law school outside a capital city, as well as being an early adopter of innovative technology in the delivery of our law programs. With UNE, you will build your preparatory legal knowledge and skills to pursue your unique goals, regardless of your educational background.Please note: students will only be admitted to the full Diploma in Paralegal Studies upon successful completion of the two open subjects [LSU100 and LAW100] with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.0.The Diploma in Paralegal Studies aims to graduate students who can demonstrate:<ol><li>a knowledge of the fundamentals of the Australian legal system;</li><li>knowledge of areas that include criminal law, dispute resolution, law and first peoples of Australia;</li><li>competence in written communication.</li></ol>

Diploma in Paralegal Studies

The Diploma of Legal Studies provides you with the opportunity for exposure to law study without a full commitment to a law degree.It is suitable both for those who plan pursue a role that could benefit from some legal knowledge, as well as those who already have this as part of their career.In addition to introductory law units that cover the foundations of law and legal reasoning, you can choose units to target one or more specialist areas relevant to your work (depending on your experience).There are also avenues for inquiry into areas including international law, human rights and environmental law, to give you a broader understanding of the role of law.Assessment tasks through the course will enhance your ability to prepare written advice and develop arguments in response to legal problems. This will see you graduating with an understanding of ethical practice with essential skills across legal reasoning, research and effective communication.

Diploma of Legal Studies

The Graduate Diploma in Laws is a graduate diploma level course in law for graduates of other disciplines. This is an innovative model of postgraduate education grounded in problem-based learning.This course articulates with the 18 unit Graduate Certificate in Laws and the 108 unit Juris Doctor, and the sequentially developed topics enable progression through the 3 awards.This course is also available as an exit award from the 108 unit Juris Doctor, subject to meeting the requirements of the Program of Study below. Graduates who complete the Graduate Diploma in Laws cannot be admitted to Legal Practice without completing further academic studies and practical training.

Graduate Diploma in  Laws

Explore a range of law specialisations by undertaking electives in your areas of interest, and prepare yourself to practice as a solicitor or barrister in Queensland, or a legal practitioner elsewhere in Australia. This degree is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board as an academic qualification for admission as a lawyer in Queensland.
