Building on your Bachelor of Science (Biology) degree, you will have the opportunity to increase your knowledge through research. You will conduct, and report on, a research project under the supervision of a staff member with the appropriate expertise. The Honours program will give you an appreciation of the professional standards required of the practising scientist, and the ethical challenges presented by modern science and technology. You will also participate in research teams, be introduced to advanced experimental and literature research methods, and have opportunities to make contact with the wider scientific community in the local region, elsewhere in Australia and overseas.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Biology)

The Diploma of Applied Science is a practical and industry-focused program tailored for individuals interested in pursuing careers in specialised fields that require applied science knowledge and skills. This program is designed to be accessible even to those who have never considered a career in science before. One of the program&#39;s unique optional focus areas is &quot;Fermentation&quot;, which is ideal for individuals looking to enter innovative food and beverage industries like cheesemaking, brewing, winemaking, and fermented food and beverage production. Core subjects cover essential topics such as science fundamentals, applied biology, data analysis, and sustainability. Additionally, students have the flexibility to choose four elective subjects that align with their specific interests. This program was created in response to the growing demand within the fermentation industries, making it highly relevant to current job market needs. A standout feature of this program is its strong emphasis on learning, allowing students to enhance their problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills by actively applying what they learn. Industry experts have played a pivotal role in the course&#39;s development and continue to contribute to its delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies, and work placements. The program offers both full-time and part-time study options. It combines online study with online practical workshops and tutorials, providing students with a flexible and well-rounded learning experience. Diploma of Applied Science

The Bachelor of Science allows you to follow a path to suit your intended career in the sciences. You will undertake an in-depth study of the Biology  – the study of all living things, encompassing diverse subdisciplines, including cell and developmental biology, behaviour, biodiversity, conservation, ecology, genetics, microbiology, anatomy and physiology. You&#39;ll learn about the function and processes that influence the ecology and evolution of organisms. You’ll consider taxa ranging from microbes to fungi, plants and animals, with a focus on Australia’s unique biodiversity. Following our philosophy of learning by doing, you’ll learn to apply your knowledge and skills, with foundational quantitative methods, to independently analyse, research and creatively solve problems. You’ll be equipped to adapt and thrive in future enterprises and employment with skills such as working collaboratively on industry- and research-related projects, and effectively communicating scientific concepts in multiple modes to a range of audiences.Supporting the primary study in Biology, students will study a minor in human biology. This popular area of biology encompasses all aspects of what it is to be human, including genetics, anatomy, physiology, anthropology, ecology and epidemiology. Core units in the degree will address the quantitative skills needed by all scientists. Scientists need to be able to understand, analyze and communicate data.Critical employability skills will be addressed both in the core units and through embedded learning in the discipline units of the majors.The course integrates real-world learning activities, culminating in a Science Capstone unit.By providing both in-depth discipline education as well as the broader skills required by all scientists the degree will provide a world-class science education.The Bachelor of Science will help you develop skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking through practical work and peer-assisted learning. This means you’ll be developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry demands, placing you in good stead for a future career in science-based growth industries, such as fermentation or salmon aquaculture. If you complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Science and wish to continue further study, you can apply for an Associate Degree in Applied Science or Bachelor of Science.

Undergraduate Certificate in Science

Bachelor of Science (Earth and Environmental Systems and Marine Systems)

The Associate Degree in Applied Science is an industry-focused program designed for people interested in working in fields that require specialised skills and knowledge of applied science principles and processes, including those who may never have considered a career in science. The stream available under this program is Fermentation and Separation.The Fermentation and Separation stream has been developed for people interested in working in innovative food and beverage industries such as brewing, winemaking, fermented food and drink production. The stream also prepares graduates to learn about the premium bio-industries (essential oils, seaweed based fertilisers, poppies, pyrethrum and biodiesel). Core subjects include applied biology, applied chemistry, data and analysis, quality management and sustainability, which are integrated with stream subjects such as applied microbiology and fermentation principles and processes. Throughout the program, students can choose four elective subjects to develop their areas of interest.A key feature of the program is the practical component, to provide hands-on learning which aims to enhance students’ problem solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills by allowing them to ‘learn through practice’. Industry experts have helped to develop the program and are actively involved in the delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies and work placements. As a result, graduates will be considered ‘workplace ready’ after two years of (full-time) study. The program is available for full-time and part-time study and is delivered through a combination of online study, practical workshops and tutorials. Graduates of the Associate Degree in Applied Science will have: a pathway to a great career in their chosen field with practical skills to take straight into the workplace and the opportunity to undertake further study at the University of Tasmania.

This unit explores the evolution of our species, what makes humans distinct, and how we have developed the biological, cultural and technological diversity we now see around us. The unit examines new research, highlighting the most recent discoveries and theoretical breakthroughs, encouraging students to learn more about the major debates, key discoveries, and important theories in the study of human evolution. Specifically, the unit provides students with a background in evolutionary theory, genetics, anthropology, paleoarchaeology, and comparative primatology in order to address a number of topics: the development of the human brain; bipedalism; language; families; social life; sexuality; reproduction; hunting; diet; art; stone tools and technology; language; domesticated plants and animals; cities; and the first civilisations. The unit also demonstrates how an evolutionary perspective offers new insights into modern human diversity, including both cultural and biological differences among us. The unit does not require a background in the biological or evolutionary sciences. It provides an excellent foundation for understanding and evaluating important contemporary issues.
