Human behaviour is universal, but its expression, nature, and intent vary across cultures and contexts. Why do individuals behave the way they do? Lecture content will introduce and explore theoretical descriptions of individual differences such as personality and intelligence that can impact behaviour in a variety of contexts, as well as some of the factors which can influence psychological well-being, such as stress and coping. This subject also introduces the study of psychological pathology (psychopathology), including a critical consideration of psychological disorders and evidence-based interventions. Tutorials will build on lecture content, support the development of reflective practice, and will facilitate the development of basic communication skills including counselling and professional communication.

Mental Health and Individual Differences

The ability to sense and respond to our environment is critical to the survival of all living things, from the simplest of single-celled organisms to complicated animals like us. In this subject, you will explore how we sense our environment, and how our brains use this information to guide behaviour. You will focus on three broad areas; first, you will investigate the senses, smell, taste, vision, hearing, and touch. This subject provides an overview of the various areas within the criminal justice system in which frontline workers come across people with mental disorders. It examines the way in which the criminal justice system (including police, court, and correctional staff) deals with individuals with mental disorders. In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

Introduction to Mental Health

Studying this introductory psychology subject, you will explore the concepts, methods and major theories of the discipline, gaining insights to explain different psychological phenomena. A range of core topics in psychology are examined, including cognition and language, intelligence, personality and individual differences, psychological health and wellbeing, psychological disorders, evidence-based interventions, social psychology and cross-cultural psychology. You will also have an opportunity to develop transferrable skills in data analysis, critical evaluation, communication and referencing.

Introductory Psychology I

This subject examines the foundations of mental health and wellbeing for individuals, families and communities. Your learning will be underpinned by models of consumer engagement, social inclusion and human rights. Using a bio-psycho-social and systems-thinking approach, you will critically examine the personal experiences of mental health and wellbeing challenges and the options for support. Emphasis is placed on service development, contextual safety and relational approaches for supporting and promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Approximately one-third of all individuals reporting somatic complaints also have anxiety disorder and / or depression. Thus, many people presenting to health practitioners will also have mental health conditions. One aim of this subject is for you to be able to identify mental health conditions, and some core principles of working with people with such conditions. People presenting for assistance in rehabilitation settings also frequently present in a state of distress - for instance, persistent pain, anger, anxiety, and shame - which can have a substantial impact on how well such people progress. It&#39;s therefore important for you to have a thorough knowledge of these states, how they can impact on a person&#39;s behaviour, and core principles of working with people in such states. As well, you will be asked to apply these principles in analysing how to tailor your approach when working with people with these conditions. This subject is designed for second-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second year.

Mental Health and Rehabilitation

In this subject, you will be introduced to psychological therapies used in the management of mental health problems and treatment of addiction, either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with pharmacological interventions. You will have the opportunity to explore factors relevant to the experience of mental health, as well as a range of psychological interventions that can be implemented in therapeutic engagement with individuals in clinical and professional settings. Through this subject, you will explore the core principles and skills of therapeutic modalities relevant to mental health care and the treatment of addiction.

Psychological Therapies in Mental Health Care

This subject provides an introduction to the field of study, integrating information about maternal and infant mental health. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. Risk factors for mental health problems are presented for discussion and reflection, and information is provided about common disorders and treatment approaches. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.

Introduction to Perinatal and Infant Mental Health

Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance, despite their desire to do so. This subject will teach you the skills to help someone you&#39;re concerned about – whether it be a friend, family member, patient, client, employee or colleague - and also identify and respond to your own mental health needs in a trauma-informed, evidence-based manner.
