This subject will focus on the tax administration of the Australian taxation system. The subject is designed to introduce students to the way in which the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) administers income tax legislation and associated legislation such as the Taxation Administration Act.

Get to know the building blocks of Australian tax. Understand how the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) works – including income tax legislation and the Taxation Administration Act.

Fundamentals of Tax Administration

This subject examines the fundamental principles of income tax law, including capital gains. You will gain an understanding of the workings and implications of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and cognate legislation such as the Taxation Administration Act 1953 and the Fringe Benefits Tax Assessment Act 1986. This subject will help you to understand the complexities of how taxation law operates – including the working of the goods and services tax under A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999. You will also explore the principles of statutory interpretation, while developing your legal research, writing and critical thinking skills to benefit your ongoing professional development.

This subject integrates work and learning for final year Masters degree students. It carries 12.5 Credit Points (equivalent to one subject) and is an elective subject or specialisation subject in a Postgraduate degree offered by the TSBE. You will undertake an internship with the UTas Tax Clinic in Hobart or Launceston.This will ensure appropriate standards are maintained and the work projects and related tasks relate to one or more of your study majors. For the duration of the internship period, the internship team will liaise closely with you and the Tax Clinic Mentor.

Professional Clinic Placement

This subject was previously &#39;Australian Tax Law&#39;.This subject introduces students to the core concepts in Australian taxation and identifies the framework (both legal and administrative) behind those concepts. The knowledge gained through this exploration enables the application of the framework to current issues faced by individuals and businesses whilst ensuring compliance with statutory and professional requirements. Basic concepts of assessable income (including capital gains) and allowable deductions are extended through different entity structures with a focus on application to real life scenarios. The subject includes an introduction to Fringe Benefits Tax as well as Goods and Services Tax. Aspects of International tax and tax avoidance issues are also explored.

Australian Tax Law and Practice

This subject is intended to help you understand the nature of taxation and the taxation system in Australia. The subject introduces you to the core concepts in Australian taxation and identifies the framework (both legal and administrative) behind such concepts. The knowledge gained through this exploration enables the application of the framework to current issues faced by individuals and businesses whilst ensuring compliance with statutory and professional requirements. Basic concepts of assessable income (including capital gains) and allowable deductions are extended through different entity structures with a focus on application to &#39;real life&#39; scenarios including an introduction to fringe benefits tax and goods and services tax. Although tax is an important component of an investor’s financial planning process, it is only one of the many factors that need to be considered. The application of tax planning strategies to a taxpayer should only be considered after a full needs analysis has been conducted.

Taxation Strategies

This subject was previously known as Advanced International Taxation Research.This subject is a research based subject that examines and critiques current issues in international tax at an advanced level. Advanced Taxation Research

In this subject students will examine diverse disputes and conflicts that arise in the taxation context. They will learn resolution methodologies, ranging from objection processes with the Australian Taxation Office to administrative and judicial proceedings in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Court and the High Court of Australia. Taxation Dispute Resolution

*** There are enrolment restrictions which the Curtin Law School have to approve. Students will need to contact <a href="https://students.connect.curtin.edu.au/app/ask" target="_blank" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Curtin Connect</a> requesting permission to enrol in MT604 Graduate International Taxation Study Tour. ***This is an international study tour and allows students to compare the Australia taxation system with those of other countries. Over approx. 30 days students will visit a number of countries and visit a number of international taxation organisations including government taxation agencies, as well as various professional organisations and world renown taxation bodies such as the OECD, IBFD. The tour also encompasses students visiting universities in the countries that are visited and meeting other students and lecturers to discuss world taxation issues The aim of the study tour is that students will immerse themselves in learning to understand and appreciate the roles of everyone involved in the International Taxation System.
