Graduate Diploma in High Performance Sport

The Master of High Performance Sport includes relevant, professional practice-related learning, independent research and project work, and an opportunity for an industry-based internship. This degree can also provide you with a pathway into further research study, for example a PhD.A series of study units focus on the technological advances for athlete monitoring, advanced principles of strength and conditioning, and the relationships between fatigue, adaptation, performance and injury. Strong theoretical knowledge and evidence based decision making should be adopted by practitioners to optimise athletes and/or teams for success. This course aims to provide students with a research-based learning experience, which involves the opportunity to investigate an area of relevance to the industry. Students will research a topic of interest, critically analyse relevant theories, concepts and/or data, and communicate the outcomes and its application in a meaningful way to a variety of audiences. Students will apply knowledge and skills developed in previous courses to address a specific area of interest, with the results of their enquiry communicate to broad audience.

Evidence Based Coaching Practice

This course will explore three core components within high performance sport; injury prevention, athlete recovery and performance nutrition. Students will develop an understanding of common approaches and applied methods in each distinct component. Further, students will critically analyse research investigating specific techniques in order to evaluate the impact of these on athlete health and performance. This course equips students with a sound understanding of key scientific principles and current evidence-based methodologies within each domain, with the ultimate goal of optimising athlete’s health, wellness and long-term performance.

Optimize your athletes’ well-being and enhance their performance. You’ll learn to combine approaches in injury prevention, athlete recovery and performance nutrition. Take a look at the research and evaluate what’s best for your team. 

Integrated Approaches to Athlete Health and Performance

This course will provide an advanced examination of physiological adaptions associated with various forms of athletic programming. Reflecting current trends in programming and exercise prescription, this course will also explore evidence based practice designed to enhance the development of different athletic attributes within various athletic settings. As part of this course, students will learn and demonstrate practical skills associated with the coaching of common resistance training exercises and various communication methods to enhance the athlete learning environment.

Applications of Strength and Conditioning

This course will allow students to collect real-time data from a number of commonly-used devices in elite sport, identify the most relevant information from large amounts of data, and develop the skills required to critically analyse the data using contemporary software platforms to develop optimal training programs and enhance athlete and team performance. The use of technology in sport to measure performance has risen in popularity due to ease of accessibility, lower cost, and reduction in size. Athletes and teams are always looking to gain a competitive edge over their rivals, and the ability of a coach to collect, analyse, identify, and effectively disseminate the most important data to other coaches and their athletes is a highly desirable skill.

Performance Technology and Analysis for Coaches

This course examines coaching through interdisciplinary approaches to the coaching process including the ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and philosophies. Specifically, students will examine pedagogical, psychological, and motor learning disciplinary knowledge and evaluate its role in coaching and athlete performance. Students will apply analytical and reflective skills to develop their own philosophy and evaluate and improve their own coaching practices.

Multidimensional Coaching Practice

The subject aims to promote awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the curriculum from a generalist teacher&#39;s perspective, and provide confidence in teaching its concepts at a primary school level. It seeks to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach generalist level physical education and other physical activities to primary school children. It also aims to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach health education and health promotion to children, parents, staff and the wider school community whilst giving pre-service teachers knowledge of and developing their capacity to discuss and analyse contemporary aspects of health and wellbeing; as well as an ability to work with others who may have health and well-being issues. Evidence-based sources will be used to develop knowledge of the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal dimensions and will be applied to a range of topics covered in the health and physical education curriculum, for example: drugs, resilience, nutrition and safety issues. The interpersonal skills of communication and conflict resolution will also be developed. National, state and local perspectives relating to the focus, structure and content of HPE will also be critically examined.Skills that are emphasised in this subject are those that have been identified by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), the ACARA HPE curriculum, as well as national teaching bodies, as important by the time you graduate with your teaching degree. These include demonstrating aspects of professional knowledge, professional relationships and professional practice.

Personal Development & HPE

This subject will enable pre-service educators to develop a sound understanding of the importance of supporting the physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing of young children for their development and learning. The subject explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination. Using a play-based approach to curriculum and safe and supportive environment, students will be able to plan quality fundamental movement experiences to enhance the outcomes for young children in the early years making links to the relevant National and State curriculum and Frameworks.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Health, Safety and Physical Education in Early Childhood

Within society, high Performance sport can be viewed through both economic and social lenses. The dominance of the economic lens means that, in many cases, the business model developed by high performance sport organisations will determine the engagement approach adopted and the value provided to stakeholders.
This subject aims to develop in students an understanding of business model structures, strategies and activity systems that operate in, and are relevant to, the high performance sport industry, as well as the contribution that the industry can make from a social and community perspective.

The Business of High Performance Sport

In high performance sport, athletes and coaches recognise that optimal nutrition is critical to sporting success. Sports nutrition links food with physical performance, providing the fuel for exercise and recovery, and the essential elements for tissue growth, maintenance and repair. This subject will address contemporary scientific and applied aspects of nutrition for sports performance. The composition, amount and timing of food intake for different sports and activities are explored, given the influence that these and others factors have on athletic performance. The aim of the subject is to provide specialist knowledge, understanding and skills for critically evaluating dietary practices for sports performance, and for communicating and delivering general nutritional advice to athletes, coaches and other support staff, within appropriate scope of practice and referral pathways. These outcomes are consistent with the professional standards of several accreditation bodies.

Performance Nutrition

The development of elite sports systems has traditionally focused on the optimal performance of the athlete. Increasingly however sport has been faced with the need to consider the development of its ‘star performers’ from a much more holistic and ‘human’ perspective. This subject will highlight the importance of an understanding of sport as the context and the athlete as a person to the effectiveness of the sport scientist and administrator.Content knowledge in the subject will investigate holistic athlete development from three perspectives. Firstly, from an organisational perspective of the structures that have developed within Australian sport to cater for the needs of athletes both on and beyond the playing field. Secondly, from the perspective of the legal and ethical responsibilities which sport is obliged to assume for the well-being of its employees. Thirdly, a more strategic perspective is adopted which draws on contemporary human resources knowledge to propose an array of benefits that can accrue to organisations that develop and implement an athlete welfare program that is based on recognising the human dignity of the athlete and the spirit of sport. This unit aims to address the issue of holistic athlete development from each of these three perspectives.
