This subject will enable pre-service educators to develop a sound understanding of the importance of supporting the physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing of young children for their development and learning. The subject explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination. Using a play-based approach to curriculum and safe and supportive environment, students will be able to plan quality fundamental movement experiences to enhance the outcomes for young children in the early years making links to the relevant National and State curriculum and Frameworks.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Health, Safety and Physical Education in Early Childhood

This course is designed to develop student’s professional skills and business understanding in high-performance sport. First, students will complete a series of practicum observations in the high-performance coaching environment across various sports/athlete groups. Further, students will examine the fundamentals of sports business and management to better prepare for working within the professional sport setting. For the final component, students will develop the essential skills required to support athletes experiencing a mental health problem or crisis via completion of the internationally acclaimed Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training.

Professional Practice in High Performance Sport

In high performance sport, athletes and coaches recognise that optimal nutrition is critical to sporting success. Sports nutrition links food with physical performance, providing the fuel for exercise and recovery, and the essential elements for tissue growth, maintenance and repair. This subject will address contemporary scientific and applied aspects of nutrition for sports performance. The composition, amount and timing of food intake for different sports and activities are explored, given the influence that these and others factors have on athletic performance. The aim of the subject is to provide specialist knowledge, understanding and skills for critically evaluating dietary practices for sports performance, and for communicating and delivering general nutritional advice to athletes, coaches and other support staff, within appropriate scope of practice and referral pathways. These outcomes are consistent with the professional standards of several accreditation bodies.

Performance Nutrition

The ability to make sound decisions in High Performance Sport is critical to maximizing performance outcomes. In order to do this, practitioners need specific knowledge and skills in data analysis techniques, in addition to the ability to present data in a meaningful way to a variety of audiences. This subject is based on contemporary data analysis techniques focusing on determining practically meaningful differences in athletic performance. A range of approaches will be explored to allow for analysis of both individual and group data. The aim of this subject is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to analyse and interpret data of relevance to sports science and athletic performance and effectively present the results.

Data Analysis and Interpretation for High Performance

As a result of a global interest in sports, both on and off the field, there is a demand for skilled professionals with a practical understanding of sports-related legal matters. Studying this subject equips you with a specialised knowledge in a range of contemporary legal issues associated with sport, as well as critical thinking skills about policy and society at large. You will develop advanced knowledge in a range of legal issues relating to sport in Australia, including aspects of international interest. As well as gaining valuable skills in the critical evaluation of how sport and the law interact, you will explore of a range of emerging sports law issues and the future directions governing sports law. Strong theoretical knowledge and evidence based decision making should be adopted by practitioners to optimise athletes and/or teams for success. This course aims to provide students with a research-based learning experience, which involves the opportunity to investigate an area of relevance to the industry. Students will research a topic of interest, critically analyse relevant theories, concepts and/or data, and communicate the outcomes and its application in a meaningful way to a variety of audiences. Students will apply knowledge and skills developed in previous courses to address a specific area of interest, with the results of their enquiry communicate to broad audience.

Evidence Based Coaching Practice

In high performance sport, athletes and coaches recognise that psychological preparation and associated performance strategies are critical to sporting success. Therefore, the aim of this subject is to develop in students an understanding of theoretical concepts and their practical application of sport and performance psychology, and their practical application as they relate to high performance athletes and the environments in which they operate. The subject will address basic and contemporary skill-acquisition and performance psychological concepts related to sport performance in high-pressure situations and their application into practice in a variety of high-pressure contexts.By developing evidence-based knowledge of performance psychology and skill-acquisition concepts and ideas, and their application in high performance sport, students will discover that psychology is as much about understanding the contexts, tasks, and environments of high performance sport as it is about the individual athlete’s mind and behaviour. The emphasis is on translating theory into practice with a means to determining the power of understanding and applying psychology in the arena of high performance sport, within appropriate scope of practice and referral pathways.

Performing Under Pressure

This course will explore three core components within high performance sport; injury prevention, athlete recovery and performance nutrition. Students will develop an understanding of common approaches and applied methods in each distinct component. Further, students will critically analyse research investigating specific techniques in order to evaluate the impact of these on athlete health and performance. This course equips students with a sound understanding of key scientific principles and current evidence-based methodologies within each domain, with the ultimate goal of optimising athlete’s health, wellness and long-term performance.

Integrated Approaches to Athlete Health and Performance

The ability to develop evidence-based, best practice, strategies to prevent sporting injury is essential in high performance sport. This subject will develop knowledge and critical thinking pertinent to the prevention of common injuries seen in high performance sport. This requires understanding and interpreting sports injury epidemiology research as well as detailed knowledge of the aetiology, mechanisms, risk factors and prevention strategies of common injury types.
The aim of this subject is to develop in students an understanding of common injuries that are seen in high performance sport, to improve their ability to critically analyse the literature, and to advance their ability to deliver evidence-based programs for the prevention of injury.

Sports Injury Prevention

To achieve success and longevity in the industry, professionals working in high performance sport must have an appreciation of its particular cultures as well as the professional standards required. In this context, culture refers to the social behaviour norms found within sports, organisations and ethnic groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This subject will introduce perspectives of culture and leadership in the high performance sport environment, with the aim to develop in students an understanding of the relationship between culture and values to that of the behaviour of individuals and the organisation. Leadership styles frequently used in professional settings will be addressed, including their place in communication in one-to-one relationships to that of multi-team leadership. Building on the introduced perspectives and understanding, students will further their understanding of strategies for effective communication and conflict management in the high performance sport organisation. An emphasis will be placed on professionals as socially responsible leaders, who exercise concern for the wellbeing of their clients, colleagues and the community, within appropriate standards of ethical practice.
