Human Structure and Function

This subject serves as an introduction to the human body and key organ systems. It begins with anatomical terminology and the relationships between body cells, tissues and organs. Key cell processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and cell division will be covered. Students will then explore the basic function and control of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems, and how these systems contribute to the changing needs of the human body. The subject includes exploration of the lymphatic and immune systems and how they provide defence against microorganisms. Study the science of anatomy as you explore the human body. You’ll get to know key terms and definitions for body parts and systems. Delve into organs, tissues and cells. Touch on the ways healthy bodies maintain stable internal environments.

An overview of the structure and function of human anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune, lymphatic and urinary systems. Human cell biology and homeostasis will also be investigated. Introductory of epidemiology will be discussed.Please Note: This subject cannot be used as credit towards a university degree. Introduction to Health Sciences

This subject was previously known as Applying Mathematics.
This subject aims to develop a core set of numeracy skills that will aid students in further study - particularly in Health Sciences and Business. Students will be introduced to a variety of mathematical concepts from basic numerical to statistical to financial, and to their real-life applications in Health Sciences and Business.

Mathematics Basics

Space weather in the Solar System includes the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field found in solar wind plasma. This subject will define these phenomena, describe the origin in the context of the Sun and consider the array of destructive effects they cause on spacecraft, instrumentation and/or planetary bodies. The subject will cover solar flares, coronal mass ejections, the solar wind, and the plasma that makes up the solar wind. Explore weather events in space and how they can disrupt technology and celestial objects. You’ll use your background in STEM to unpack solar winds and radiation. Topics include CMEs and solar flares. Think about ways to minimise space weather impacts.

Space Environment

This subject will track the origin and evolution of the space industry from the point of view of exploration of the solar system. We will focus on the multi-disciplinary investigation of all Solar System bodies, from the Sun to the Oort cloud and beyond. We will cover the history of space exploration from ancient to modern times, using ground and space-based methods, including instrument payload and science objectives. The subject will also detail the spin-offs from space-related engineering and science that have benefitted humanity and the economy through this pathway. Exploration of the Solar System: Foundations of Space Industry

The subject covers basic algebra: application and transposition of formulae, indices, solution of equations, and Trigonometry. It will also cover Functions: polynomials, exponential, logarithmic; Trigonometric transformations of function, Linear Algebra, and introduction to Matrices.
This subject has been developed in order to meet Curtin University’s requirement to enter Science based courses. The subject meets the minimum mathematical pre-requisite for Curtin degrees requiring WACE Mathematics Applications and may not satisfy requirements for certain study areas requiring Mathematics Methods, Advanced Mathematics or Mathematics Specialist as pre-requisites. We advise all prospective students to liaise with third party institutions as to the suitability of the UNR07 subject meeting specific entry requirements.
