In today’s information-rich world it is essential to be able to interpret and critically evaluate empirical and popular reports of psychological research, as well as research findings more broadly. We need to be able to recognise the characteristics of valid research, to understand what distinguishes trustworthy reporting from biased and misleading reporting, and to communicate the findings from psychological and other research in a clear, accessible and unbiased way. In this subject you will explore foundational concepts of research methods, research design and research ethics that will help you interpret and critically evaluate psychological research. You will learn how to use library and web resources to locate relevant, reliable and valid evidence about psychological findings and theories. You will also learn skills to help you summarise conceptual and numerical information in a clear, concise and accessible manner for a range of audiences. The skills gained in this subject are powerful and readily transferable to many of today’s workplaces and they provide a solid foundation for further study in psychology.

Transferable Skills in Psychology

The field of psychology has an aim that, on the surface, appears straightforward: to understand human behaviour. However, human behaviour is varied and complex, and achieving this goal presents a considerable challenge. Researchers must be familiar with and adhere to regulatory requirements to ensure that research is consistent with ethical principles. The breadth of questions that psychology attempts to answer demands researchers are able to employ a wide array of research methods and design principles. The variety of data collected in psychological research, and the purposes for which data is collected, requires that researchers make informed choices from a range of data analysis tools. Researchers must also make decisions about the format and style of presentation for summarising and reporting conceptual and numerical information for a variety of audiences.In this subject you will examine research methods that will help you design studies to investigate questions about relationships and differences among psychologically relevant variables. You will learn when and how to use data analysis methods to summarise data, test statistical hypotheses and interpret the results for relationships and differences among variables. You will learn about the principles that underlie ethical research, in relation to both research participants and the conduct of researchers themselves.The skills and knowledge developed in this subject will provide you with the necessary tools to critically evaluate research from the major sub-disciplines of psychology, as well as a wide-range of other science-based disciplines.

Research Skills in Psychology

Extreme environments are so named due to the unique challenges they pose to human performance. In this online subject, you will learn about the factors that characterise an environment as extreme, and how living and/or working in an extreme environment can influence human functioning. In this context, you will consider how individuals and groups can manage distress and enhance resilience. Extreme environments considered include Antarctica, outer space, military operations, disaster sites, and cults. In this subject, you will examine how intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organisational factors influence the challenges posed by extreme environments. This subject would be of benefit to students with an interest in factors which influence human performance and resilience, and to students who work in, or intend to work in, extreme environments.

Human Behaviour in Extreme Environments

This subject aims to introduce students to a range of psychiatric disorders including psychological symptoms, theoretical models, assessment and evidence-based treatments. Consideration is given to a range of cognitive-behavioural strategies employed by clinical psychologists in the treatment of various mental health conditions. Students will participate in both face-to-face and self-directed practical classes, which will facilitate their understanding of a range of psychological and psychiatric disorders.

Clinical Psychology

How do humans perceive the world around them, learn, and make decisions? Under what conditions do we do these things well? When and why do things go a bit “pear-shaped”? How can we be better? This subject introduces the study of cognitive processes, and considers their function in a variety of real-world settings. Lecture topics include: perception and object recognition, attention, memory, language, and thinking. This subject places particular emphasis on identifying the areas where human cognition can go wrong, and identifying methods for individuals (including students themselves) to become more discerning consumers of information and better decision-makers. In tutorials, students are introduced to research in cognitive psychology through demonstrations and activities in areas related to the lecture topics. Students will broaden their understanding of cognitive processes and develop their research-based skills including their ability to: search scientific literature, critically analyse and synthesise information, evaluate research design, interpret data, and report research findings scientifically.

Psychological Processes

The subject offers a broad overview of the major theories and approaches to the study of crime and deviance. It provides a survey of diverse and competing interpretations of criminal and deviant acts, the situations and contexts within which crime and deviance are defined and take place, and the explanations put forward for the causes and consequences of deviance in society. The subject encourages students to think critically and practically engage with the key questions and colourful issues that criminologists face, including why and how some behaviours and subcultures are regarded as deviant or criminal and others are not. Each theoretical perspective is vividly illustrated throughout the subject with contemporary applications in topical lectures and tutorials. For example, the subject may cover topics like youth crime and youth gangs, sex work and sexuality, crimes of the marginalised and the powerful, terrorism and counter-terrorism, as well as analysing the dynamic impact of stigma, moral panics and social control on individuals and society.

Crime and Deviance

Language is what makes us human. It influences our thoughts and affects our lives in even more ways that we might expect. In this advanced subject, students are introduced to the most important and strongly debated issues in the psychology of language. Lecture topics include the distinctive features of human language as a system of communication, language structure, acquisition and development, the understanding and production of speech (and what happens when these processes go wrong), the development of reading and spelling, and how the social and cultural environment can influence how language is used.

Psychology of Language

This advanced subject builds on the intermediate material covered in PSY224 (Behavioural and Cognitive Neuroscience) which forms a basis for understanding neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Lectures in neuropsychology will cover the neuroscience of major neuropsychological disorders and syndromes (e.g., neurodegenerative and developmental disorders, and acquired brain injury), the functional consequences of brain dysfunction, and an introduction to clinical neuropsychological assessment and intervention. Lectures in clinical neuroscience will cover evidence for the neuroscientific basis of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. Compulsory practicals (either on campus classes or online activities) will build on topics covered in lectures through interactive activities and demonstrations, including an introduction to neuropsychological test administration, and discussion of case studies of neuropsychological and behavioural disorders/syndromes.

Neuropsychology and Clinical Neuroscience

This subject offers a systematic approach to understanding psychological assessment and measurement. Consideration is given to a range of psychological assessment strategies and how these can be applied across a range of contexts . This subject is designed to provide you with foundational skills and knowledge relevant to research and pre-professional training. Throughout the subject, you will develop practical skills and knowledge to a foundational level of competence in relation to psychological assessment, appropriate test selection , and evaluating the efficacy of assessment tools.

Psychological Assessment and Measurement

This subject will provide an introduction to psychology and law. The progression of lecture topics in this subject will roughly follow the course of an investigation and trial of a criminal case, covering issues such as eyewitness memory; false memories; police interviewing techniques; deception detection; and juror decisions. Throughout the subject, the focus will be on how psychological science can (a) help us understand various aspects of the legal system, and (b) help to improve important processes in policing and courtroom trials.
