The applicability of calculus and linear algebra is so broad that fluency in it is essential for a successful career in a variety of areas including science and engineering. This subject is devoted to the conceptual and logical development of these two main areas of mathematics, gradually building the tools for solving innumerable problems of great practical importance. In the calculus part of the subject, a brief look at the Real Number System and their properties will lead us to the study of Functions in general and the study of special functions such as trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. The notion of limits will be utilized to define continuity and differentiability of functions, emphasizing the importance of understanding the material conceptually and graphically. This area will also help establish the technical skills necessary to solve problems arising in practical situations. One highlight of the subject will be the discussion of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, which unifies differential and integral calculus. An introduction to two and three dimensional vector spaces will be an essential part of the subject as the knowledge in that area is vital, particularly for studies in engineering and physics. This subject is a required unit in the Bachelor of Science mathematics major and Bachelor of Engineering students.

Mathematics 1A

Bridging Maths explores essential foundation skills and knowledge in mathematics. This subject is designed to help you to improve your maths skills, build self-confidence, develop logical thinking skills, and encourage good study habits to support independent study. You will have the opportunity to practice fundamental skills before applying your knowledge to solve problems. This subject can help you prepare for further study in business and science related courses and is recommended as a starting point for students who have not studied pre-tertiary mathematics in years 11 &amp; 12.Topics covered include: order of operations, basic algebra, linear/quadratic/exponential equations, graphical methods and modelling, indices and logarithms, sequences and series, trigonometry, and basic statistics.

Build a solid foundation in mathematics before you delve into more advanced courses. Grow your basic working knowledge of topics including trigonometry, basic statistics, and more. Work on solving mathematical problems.

Bridging Maths

This subject is a continuation of KMA152, with emphasis on the application of single-variable calculus and linear algebra to problems in mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, economics, and engineering. The subjects KMA152 and KMA154 also provide an excellent introduction to the mathematical rigour required for higher level mathematics based subjects.

Mathematics, equipped with the powerful tools logic and reasoning, is the key ingredient that enriches all areas of education. A sound knowledge in mathematics not only opens up numerous career options, but also helps to understand the world in which one operates. The subject aims to provide the necessary introductory knowledge that is essential to undertake university studies in mathematics, which require pre-tertiary mathematics background. Students will learn basic concepts of number and algebra, leading to the study of functions in general and the study of special functions such as trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. The concept of the derivative of a function will be discussed from first principles and applied to a range of real-world problems, emphasising the importance of understanding the material conceptually and graphically. Graph sketching and optimisation problems will demonstrate simple applications of the derivative. Students will learn skills of integral calculus, with applications to finding areas under curves.Students who successfully complete Introduction to University Mathematics will qualify for entry into subjects or degree programs at the University of Tasmania which have pre-tertiary Mathematics Methods 4 MTM514117 or equivalent as a prerequisite, including first year subject Mathematics 1B (TAS-KMA154). The subject may be taken as an elective to support other majors in the BSc or any other degree.

A brief look at basic concepts and notation of sets will lead us to the study of linear algebra and systems of linear equations related to graphs of linear functions. We will then study algebra with indices, logarithms and trigonometry. The concept of sequences and series will be introduced through arithmetic and geometric progressions. The subject will conclude with studies of probability and statistics. We look at dependent and independent events, conditional probability and probability tables. We will also discuss permutations and combinations. Finally, we will investigate collecting data, presenting categorical and discrete data, data distributions and correlations between variables.
