This degree is designed to provide students with basic skills and knowledge in a range of disciplinary studies in the humanities, arts and social sciences. The Diploma in Arts examines historic, environmental, social, behavioural and cultural features of humanity, allowing students to analyse, reflect upon and anticipate patterns of human conduct. Students will develop creative, critical and analytical skills to assist with future employment or to pursue further study.

Children’s literature is an important tool for exposing children to the moral, ethical and practical problems of the world in a way that is manageable and accessible for them.When you study this unit you will be introduced to the key elements of children’s literature, using case studies from children’s books, stories and poetry. You will gain an understanding of the range of concepts involved in analysing children’s texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts and the role of literature in childhood.You will explore a range of literary genres, techniques, and styles (including humour, fantasy and realism) in order to gain essential skills in reading, understanding and writing about literature.

Introduction to Literature: Children's Books

This subject was previously known as Introduction to Modern Italian Literature and Culture.Enhance your knowledge and understanding of Italian culture with this Italian language subject. This subject is designed to introduce you to 20th-Century Italy through the study of Italian poetry, narrative, drama and cinema. Through close textual analysis of the prescribed works, you will extend your competency in reading and help you to understand modern Italian culture. You will be interpreting and evaluating the texts in the context of the socio-political situation in modern day Italy.

Introduction to Contemporary Italy

Literature generates new ideas, represents traditions and reflects society’s changing values. In this subject you will focus on the relationship between literature and large social and historical movements. You will read texts from the 19th to the 21st centuries and develop a versatile critical toolkit of concepts to use throughout your studies. Using these texts and tools, you will be able to analyse literature as a form of social and political expression and explore its relationship to history. Additionally, you will be able to identify how novels and poems reflect, resist, and/or inspire cultural change.

Approaches to Literature and Society

To engage with literature is to explore different ways of seeing the world – to appreciate and better understand human ideas, society, history and the future, and so expand your knowledge of the ideas central to human culture as these are expressed through the literary imagination. In this subject you will study a range of literary texts in English. You will be introduced to works from different historical periods in different genres - short stories, poetry, novels, and plays. You will also explore the key critical concepts in literary studies. You will explore these works through close reading and critical analysis, focusing on the relationship between form and content, and considering how the different literary techniques available to writers shape the way their texts make meaning.
