La Trobe’s Bachelor of Health Information Management combines the clinical and business sides of healthcare to prepare you for a career as a health information expert. You’ll develop a comprehensive skillset covering areas like clinical classification, data analytics, health informatics and health systems management.Build the foundation of your skills in health information management in your first year of study. Then deepen your technical and professional expertise throughout the rest of your degree, including 55 days of supervised professional placement.With the perfect blend of expertise and experience, you’ll graduate ready to work in all areas of healthcare – from hospitals and community health centres to specialist disease registries.You&#39;ll learn:<ul><li>Anatomy and physiology<ul><li>Understand the fundamental internal and external structures of the body and how they function. Learn the language of medicine.</li></ul></li><li>Health informatics and data analysis<ul><li>Discover how to apply Health Information Technology (HIT) into a healthcare setting to aid the delivery of care. Bachelor of Health Information Management

In this subject you will be introduced to types, uses and applications, of personal and aggregate health data and other information within Australian healthcare agencies. Administrative and clinical systems used for capturing health information on individual patients and clients will be examined. Clinical recording methodologies, health information standards and decision support systems are introduced. The uses of aggregate data are studied in relation to information systems; health information flow; and health data quality and integrity. Electronic and manual systems for health record identification, filing, and tracking are discussed. Case studies, enquiries, and professional placements are used to apply critical theories to health applications. You will integrate theory and practice by undertaking a short five-day professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of a healthcare agency to which you are assigned. Hospital on-site placements are a core requirement for all students regardless of the instance (blended or online) in which you are enrolled. To meet professional competency requirements students must pass both the professional placement and academic components of the subject.

Management Of Health Information

In this subject you will develop an introductory working knowledge of the fundamental conventions and rules for classification of diseases and health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization&#39;s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-AM), the Australian Classification for Health Interventions (ACHI) and the Australian Coding Standards (ACS). You will develop an understanding of the complexities of the classification process. You will develop skills in medical record abstraction and interpretation to support the application of health classification systems. You will develop competency in classificatory practice within the parameters of expected industry timeframes and levels of accuracy. You will gain knowledge in diagnostic, therapeutic and radiological techniques, and drug therapy. Only a Pass or Fail is awarded. A Pass will reflect a grade 75% or greater. This is in line with industry standards and expectations  This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students, who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.
