Paralegals are a highly-valued part of the legal sector and there is increasing demand for paralegal professionals who can think outside the box.This course will get you working in law quickly and lays the foundation for career progression. As you explore the Australian legal system, you will gather skills in legal research and writing, and absorb foundational principles in key areas of the law. You can choose to undertake voluntary legal experience or a para-professional placement to become familiar with the issues facing working paralegals. An optional major in Conveyancing provides the academic pre-requisite for qualification as a conveyancer in NSW.Paralegals work with solicitors and barristers, in government legal departments, law enforcement agencies, legal aid offices, court administration, public prosecutions and in the community and corporate sectors in finance, banking, insurance and conveyancing.Graduates may also consider roles as a para-professional within a range of industries. This degree is also a pathway to further studies to become a lawyer.

This subject introduces students to the disciplines of criminology and criminal justice. It begins with an examination of the nature of crime and how it is defined and measured in contemporary society. The subject then provides an overview of the impact of criminological theories on our understanding of crime problems and the implications for criminal justice responses.

Examine crime and the ways it’s defined and explained in contemporary society. Study the relationship between crime and class, youth and crime (and the response), gender and crime, and the over-representation of Indigenous people.

Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice

An understanding of how the legal system works is a valuable skill for students pursuing a wide range of career outcomes. This subject is suited to non-law students and provides a comprehensive introduction to legal studies, starting you on the path to achieving an understanding of how legal systems operate in Australia and elsewhere. You will explore the ways in which the law is made, and how law applies in various contemporary contexts. As part of your study, you will also develop introductory level skills in legal research, writing and analysis.

This subject provides an overview of the various areas within the criminal justice system in which frontline workers come across people with mental disorders. It examines the way in which the criminal justice system (including police, court, and correctional staff) deals with individuals with mental disorders. In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

Mental Health, Psychology and the Criminal Justice System

Law, Crime and Justice

Students discover how the rules of contract formation and operation apply in the business world. Students learn how to understand common business contractual terms and implications to develop an appreciation of how contracts are used to allocate risk. Through examining topics and themes such as cybercrime, the ethical challenges of AI in justice and the societal impacts of these technologies, you will gain an understanding of the evolving landscape of crime prevention on both local and global levels.A core component of this subject is the hands-on use of real-world AI tools and crime datasets. You will apply these tools to identify crime trends and explore how emerging technologies can be leveraged to address complex crime issues. This practical engagement will bridge theory and practice, equipping you with skills directly applicable to real-world scenarios.Over the course of this subject , you&#39;ll develop a comprehensive understanding of how emerging technology is transforming criminal behaviour and the technology-orientated strategies used to combat crime.

Digital Futures: Crime, AI and Emerging Technologies

The public policy arena presents a complex framework of actors, politics, instruments, and practices. This subject examines the broad range of theories, models, influences, and players that shape the development of Australian public policy. It aims to equip students with the knowledge of both the theoretical underpinnings and real-world challenges of the field. The subject examines the economics of public policy, agenda-setting, the policy process, policy instruments, policy implementation, the role of the media, policy consultation, and evidence-based policy-making versus politics, values and ideas. The assessment, which includes a policy briefing paper, provides students with opportunities to select, investigate, and critically analyse real-world governance and public policy problems.

Public Policy

Why do some problems come to the attention of governments while others do not? Who is involved in the policy-making process? Pressure groups, media, think tanks; what are their goals? How are policies evaluated? Theoretical explanations are combined with practical examples from Australia and overseas to provide students with a critical understanding of how policy is made. Public Policy Analysis

Technological capacity is increasingly a defining feature of security capability, whether at the national or international level. In recent years, security cooperation between states has involved non-state actors with technical expertise, products, and solutions.  This subject provides students with a foundation to approach questions about technology in security: How does technology promise to solve key concerns for security and sovereignty? How do technologies shape security interests, definitions, or objectives? Spying has long been a mainstay of wars and international diplomacy.
