This subject examines the relationship between language and culture and explores the different varieties of language and dialects, as well as the various styles and registers that can exist within any one language. The subject explores theories of language and language learning, including transcultural communication, to enhance the ability and confidence of teachers to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Specific reference will be made to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects as well as people learning English as an additional language.

This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese. This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Japanese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing characters (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji) through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Start speaking, listening, reading and writing in Japanese. You’ll grow your appreciation of Japan’s rich and unique culture. Enhance your Japanese travels, communicate with locals, and make meaningful connections. 

This subject is suitable for students with no or very limited experience in foreign language learning and is designed to support the learning needs of a university student with no or very limited knowledge of the Korean language. With a focus on supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this unit will introduce students to basic written and spoken Korean communication skills needed in daily life in Korea. On successful completion of this subject students will be able to master basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea, such as greetings, introductions, talking about past events, asking and giving permission as well as asking and giving directions. Students will also be introduced to the Korean writing system hangeul, and learn skills in writing basic emails, text messages and SMS messages in Korean while learning about Korean society, culture and history to contextualise their learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.Korean language study is highly recommended for students planning a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. A communication-oriented approach is used to help students develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Standard Japanese so that they will be able to interact with speakers of Japanese in simple day-to-day situations. This subject is an intermediate level subject suitable for students who have successfully completed Korean Intermediate 1 or who have an equivalent level of competency. This subject is an intermediate level subject suitable for students who have successfully completed Korean for Beginners 2, or who have an equivalent level of competency, such as ATAR Korean. Taught through interactive and self-directed engaging learning approaches and materials, this subject will enable students to progress their Korean language competency and cultural literacy in various aspects of Korean society and culture to prepare them to live and work in Korea. On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to both read and produce low-intermediate level materials in Korean and gain further confidence in using Korean language in everyday and workplace settings. This subject builds on the learning outcomes of Korean Beginners 1. Focusing on a supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this subject will build on the basic written and spoken Korean communication skills achieved through the successful completion of Korean Beginners 1. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to extend their knowledge of the basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea.Through readings and classroom exercises, students will also be introduced to polite formal language registers required in the Korean workplace and learn further key grammatical structures while learning about Korean education system, workplace cultures food cultures to contextualise their language learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.The study of Korean language and culture is highly recommended for students planning on a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. This subject is designed to promote awareness and understanding of communicative patterns and behaviours in Japanese culture. The subject deals with Japanese cultural key words, language-specific rules and customs, and the relationship between culture and language.
