This subject introduces students to law, politics, and criminal justice in Australia. It explores how laws are made, the influence of politics on law reform, the role of the media, human rights protections, and criminal responsibility. It considers the historical treatment of First Nations peoples in Australia&#39;s legal system and the role that law plays in promoting justice and accountability. This knowledge provides a foundation for further study on criminal law and justice systems.

Law, Crime and Justice

Students discover how the rules of contract formation and operation apply in the business world. Social Problems and the Law

In this subject, you will learn about ethics, law and management in the Australian context, and how they will influence, or be the focus of, your practice as health professionals. An understanding of ethics, law and management pertaining to the fields of health care and public health is important for students studying in diverse professional areas including health promotion, public health, allied health, paramedicine, nursing, dentistry, occupational health and environmental health. Using contemporary resource materials, case studies and online peer to peer discussions, you will develop an understanding of fundamental concepts in the fields of ethics, law and management; gain experience in researching and discussing ethical, legal and managerial aspects of their practice as health professionals; and acquire basic skills in fundamental areas of management and in applying ethical principles.

Law and Management in Health

This subject introduces you to a range of areas where psychological research has shaped criminal law and procedure, such as the rules relating to expert evidence in criminal trials, and how the psychological literature informs criminal justice responses to particular groups of people. This includes exploring factors that may contribute to miscarriages of justice, such as: the psychology of interrogations and false confessions; the psychological dimensions of juror decision-making; and what the psychological research on memory, perception and recall suggests for the limitations of eyewitness identification. The subject also critically examines the laws and procedures relevant to the criminal prosecution of people with mental illness and/or cognitive impairment, including fitness to stand trial and the defence of mental impairment. Drawing on a range of case studies, the subject examines how the criminal justice system has developed to take into account developments in our understanding of human behaviour.

Introduction to Forensic Psychology and the Law

This subject is designed for criminology students to develop a critical understanding of the key aspects of contemporary criminal law. This includes the general structure of criminal offences, as well as some specific and selected offences, including homicide. The course also develops your understanding of criminal process and procedure through the lenses of key institutions such as the courts, police, and juries. Within this unit there is a focus on industry informed career development learning activities to support setting goals for personal and professional development.

Criminal Law for Criminal Justice Professionals

This subject is a critical introduction to the Australian legal system that addresses the operation, aims, and institutions of criminal justice. It equips students with foundational knowledge of the operation of criminal justice and how the legal system addresses basic questions of criminological and sociological importance. The subject addresses the relationship between crime and law in Australia; the making of laws by the Parliament and Courts; venues and methods of legal adjudication and interpretation; and the complex interactions between actors that comprise the legal system, including lawyers, police, magistrates and the media. The sustainability of the legal system is evaluated in its historical, ethical, economic and social context.

Introduction To The Australian Legal System

In this subject, you will develop a working knowledge of health information professional responsibilities concerning ethical, legal, compliance, and governance obligations in the computing field and healthcare information industry. These include the ethical and legal frameworks underpinning the creation, collection, reporting, management and uses of health data, related documents, systems, and technologies. Key topics include: privacy; security; confidentiality; access; e-health; ownership; data linkage; and information and documentation issues surrounding biomedical and health technologies and clinical practice. Students develop ethical and legal understandings of: electronic and paper-based health records; managing the organisation-wide privacy function; information systems and services; and the legal implications and responsibilities inherent in health information management work.  This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for third-year undergraduate students, and for students who have completed all first- and second-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.
