These include information selection and management, data analytics, fact verification, critical appraisal, source selection, and various genres of communication writing.

Start to think and write like a journalist. You’ll learn how to find and use credible information. And how to write up your facts into news stories. Gain confidence as a writer who people can trust and rely on. 

Writing for Media introduces you to the practice of writing for various media platforms and audiences. The focus of the subject will be to teach you how to write a range of media texts and to develop skills in editing and honing your work. The key learning outcomes of writing concisely, effective revision, distilling information and sound knowledge of grammar and style are transferable across a range of vocations. You will develop a folio of written work. This is a level 1 subject.  This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either online or face-to-face tutorials weekly. These classes may fall in business hours.

This subject was previously known as Writing Magazine Features.This subject deals with the social and cultural contexts, structure and characteristics of feature article writing. It examines the sources of ideas, and their generation and development into stories, and explores basic forms, styles, structures and content. The unit will develop practical writing skills with special attention to publication style and the ability to write for different markets.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Focus on researching, writing and producing news and current affairs stories for television and online. You will explore: History of broadcast journalism; Radio and television; The newsroom; The studio; Writing for broadcast; The line-up; Voice and presentation; Camera and sound; Principles of interviewing; The edit; The pitch; Story planning and production and the practice of mobile journalism. You will need to have access to the internet on a computer with standard modern inclusions (Mic and Webcam).
Broadcast Journalism is designed to extend and develop the skills introduced in second year Journalism subjects with a focus on researching, writing and producing news and current affairs stories for television and online. ThisÂ unit also includes advanced techniques in media presentation, production, problem solving and the student&#39;s critical evaluation of their own performance.

News and Information Gathering is a practical examination of the realities of news research and news gathering in the key rounds, or specialist reporting areas that exist in real newsrooms around the world. These include reporting tasks such as media conferences andÂ reporting court and council. The key journalistic rounds of crime and courts, politics and parliaments, councils, health and education, social issues, sport and leisure, economics and finance, science and specialties and consumer affairs will be covered.Working with an experienced teacher you will complete practical news gathering and writing tasks. You will meet deadlines, reflect on ethical issues, apply your understanding of media law and gather news across a range of fields. The online forum component of the subject encourages you to relate your practical work to the relevant literature in the area and discuss your views with your peers. Delve into the challenges and constraints of journalistic research. In this subject you will explore difficult and complex decisions within the professional environment. You will also be presented with opportunities to work through practical problems.The subject encourages you to develop a systematic approach to information gathering that reflects your own style and interests. While producing a range of news writing assignments, you must meet tight deadlines, confront ethical uncertainties and work across a range of fields. While studying this subject you will develop your ability to locate, evaluate and use information in a range of contexts and to display a nose for news and a professional demeanour.

News and Information Gathering

The Emerging Journalist introduces you to the shifting roles and responsibilities of journalists and journalism within liberal democratic societies. You will appreciate the contemporary media landscape and the role of journalists and media organisations in relation to social, economic, political and cultural power structures. Topics and issues covered include best practices in news and feature writing, media ethics, and working with sources. Assessment tasks are designed to give you an opportunity to start building a portfolio of journalistic work. Feature writing is one of the most enduring and satisfying styles of modern journalism, allowing writers to settle into their subject in a more creative and in-depth way than ‘hard’ bulletin-style news writing. It’s about scratching below the surface and revealing the people and places, the hows, and the whys behind the news.  To help you on the road to feature writing mastery, we will be exploring and practising a number of techniques around selecting a topic and an angle, interviewing, structuring your work, writing a fabulous intro, using quotes and description, and editing and publishing.
