Information technology and computing increasingly define how the world operates. Software permeates every area of modern living, from the smallest personal device to automating  entire industries. Information Technology professionals are responsible for designing the software that runs so much of our lives, and for creating systems that handle and analyse incredible amounts of data.
The Diploma in Information Technology is a one-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) course that will provide students with a foundation in computing, and the flexibility to take on more advanced and specialised topics - be that specific technical skills, professional skills, or mathematical areas related to modern computing.
This degree is designed for students seeking an introduction to study in information technology or looking to grow their computer science, data science, or mathematical skills. Software development is a collaborative undertaking that requires the integration of different technologies to build elegant and intuitive solutions. This subject introduces you to the fundamentals of software production. Helping you to develop a strong understanding of how data is represented and manipulated within a computer system, you will solve problems in a series of individual and collaborative software development tasks. Your capacity for critical thinking, analysis and complex problem solving will be extended as you build interactive software in a high-level programming language, applying your skills to effectively communicate design choices. With the Australian Government predicting very strong future growth for the sector, highly skilled professionals who can harness the tools of modern software development are in demand.

Learn how to design and build interactive software. You’ll explore how teams work together in collaborative practices, then tackle group software development tasks and individual programming tasks. Incorporate design principles and a range of technologies.

The widespread application of digital information systems in society today produces vast amounts of data. Appropriate management of this data is essential for it to be an effective tool for decision making and value adding. Introducing you to the concepts of database design, this subject takes you from the conceptual level through to the physical level of database management systems, developing your understanding of the techniques underpinning these systems. You will study relational databases and learn how to model, create and efficiently query them using Structured Query Language (SQL), using relational algebra to provide more generalised data and query definitions within relational database systems. Design strategies to avoid redundancy, concepts of functional dependency, normalisation and relational decomposition are examined. Exploring approaches for connecting external applications to databases, you will also gain an awareness of security issues involved with data access.

Database Management Systems

Object-oriented programming is one of several popular programming paradigms in use today. It is based around the concept of &#39;classes&#39; and their instances, known also as &#39;objects&#39; and their interactions. Objects contain both data, called attributes, and code, known as methods. This subject introduces you to techniques for computer program development using Java, an object-oriented programming language. You will explore topics that cover the breadth of this coding style, building a well-rounded understanding of its underlying concepts. These include classes, objects, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, single and multidimensional arrays, file input/output, decision structures and loops. You will also examine programming language features for parameter passing, exception handling, and simple user interface development. With skills in object-oriented programming, you will be equipped to generate clean and efficient code with diverse practical applications.

Object Oriented Programming

The technology-driven worlds of science and engineering are increasingly integrated with computer science and its applications. Having high-level quantitative skills and the ability to keep pace with new developments in programming can help you to stand out in your career.  This subject introduces you to fundamental programming concepts, including conditional branching, looping and recursion, and you will learn to program in a high-level programming language.  Studying the algorithms used for common tasks in numerical analysis, you will explore solving linear equations, interpolation, root finding, curve fitting, numerical integration, random numbers and Monte Carlo methods, and numerical solutions to ordinary differential equations.  Throughout the subject, hands-on quantitative problems relevant to the sciences and engineering will allow you to hone your problem-solving skills.

Computational Mathematics

In an era of rapid technological innovation, data and the capacity to process it are the most valuable assets in many fields. Studying this subject, you will learn how data is represented, stored and processed in computer systems. Extending your high-level technological literacy, the subject introduces you to a way of thinking that uses abstraction to move from low level hardware concepts to higher level programming concepts. Working through the natural progression of related concepts in computer programming, you will first explore how circuits can implement logic, then how logic lets us implement computer architecture (memory, processors), and how assembly language lets us write programs that manipulate data, before circling back to the relationship between programs and logic.

Get an introductory understanding of the links between logic, reasoning, data, and computation. Learn how data is represented, stored, and processed in computer systems. 

The internet has changed the way people interact with, and think about, computers. From online news to social networking sites, the diversity of ways that we utilise the internet is extensive; yet how many people understand how this technology works and how to create a web page?  This subject introduces you to the fundamentals and modern concepts of web development, equipping you with skills that are increasingly valuable as the internet becomes further embedded in our lives.  You will learn how web servers and clients communicate using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). You will also explore the formal languages used for web site development: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used to generate the structure of web pages, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to apply stylistic features that enhance web page presentation, and Javascript and jQuery to provide dynamic user interactions.  Techniques such as server-side scripting (PHP) with session management are also discussed.

Web Programming

Are you interested in learning skills in technology and scientific data modelling that can help you to stand out in your career, but lack programming experience?  This subject provides you with an introduction to scientific programming, using problem-based learning and hands-on, practical exercises.  Delving into fundamental programming concepts that are invaluable in a scientist&#39;s tool kit, the unit is designed to help you hone the skills needed to use and apply common techniques used in modern scientific programming. These include data analysis, advanced graphs and image analysis.  You will develop programs in MATLAB, applying these to a wide range real-world of topical and emerging issues in the physical and life sciences.

Introduction to Scientific Programming

In a world where technology is constantly evolving, this subject will give you a well-rounded understanding of the application and impact of contemporary technologies and the impact on lawyers and clients. Structured in two parts, the first component provides you with a detailed analysis of the wide varieties of technologies and innovations in legal practice, from large international law firms to boutique sole practices, in-house counsel, community law centres and corporates. The second half examines the impacts of blockchain, artificial intelligence (big data) and other evolving technologies on clients and examines how lawyers can understand the risks and needs for clients.

Technology and the Law

Experience the power of programming with an introduction to computational thinking and the fundamental concepts of programming, sensors, data and robotics. Ideal if you have not previously studied programming, or you want to broaden your scope, this subject uses visual languages, JavaScript and programmable game environments to introduce concepts quickly, enabling you to build powerful programs and creations. Using programming concepts as a foundation, you will control bots in games and robot simulations. You will also explore topics in mark-up languages (e.g. HTML), natural language processing (how machines can process human language), and asynchronous programming (how robots, agents, and devices can communicate and coordinate). The subject is designed to prepare you for the study of professional programming languages in computer science or information technology degrees.

A programming language gives us a way of modelling and expressing a computer program. As programs tackle more complex tasks using big, fast, and distributed flows of data, the need for more powerful ways to think about and express our programs will only increase.  This subject introduces you to the paradigms (the particular styles or features) behind advanced programming languages used by many of the world’s leading software companies.  Taught predominantly using Scala, a mixed-paradigm language that will familiarise you with many concepts, the subject helps you to develop knowledge and technical skills with broad practical applications.  You will learn about functional programming, different type systems, and techniques for asynchronous, streaming and reactive programming. These techniques are useful across a wide spectrum – from making small problems simple, to modern event-based web systems, to “fast data” systems that process large flows of asynchronous data.
