This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Living with Fire is a level-100 subject offered as part of the Diploma of Sustainable Living.  Fire has shaped the evolution of the world we see around us and is fundamental to life. Yet wildfire can also be devastating to human and ecological communities. Today, more and more of us are living in fire prone areas, and wildfires are behaving in new, less predictable ways.  So how do we live with fire - as individuals, and as communities? How do we plan for fire, and how do we respond when fires happen? How do we ensure that we are using fire in a sustainable way? What are the trade-offs involved in fire management? And what might we learn from indigenous Australians, who have used fire skilfully on this continent for over 40,000 years?  Living with Fire is for anyone interested in these complex but practical and fascinating questions about fire in our lives today. You will learn what causes fire and why wildfires behave the way they do. As well as the science of fire, you will learn about the human dimensions of fire and the complex trade-offs involved in fire management between the needs of culture and society, and ecology and biodiversity. You will learn how to evaluate your own level of fire risk and what you can do to plan for fire as an individual. You will also become more empowered to participate in conversations about how we plan for and respond to fire in our local communities.

This subject is an elective of the Diploma of Sustainable Living course and explores the interlinked scientific, technical, environmental, economic, social and political factors that have shaped society&#39;s energy usage and which will impact on future energy policy and decision making. Energy science, technology, usage and energy policy affect almost all facets of modern life. Energy is the single most traded commodity in the global economy, it is a significant factor that affects political decision making at global, national, state and local levels, and a major determinant of economic and social wellbeing. Ensuring future responsible, equitable, access to affordable energy for both developed and developing societies is one of the most significant challenges currently facing humanity. Critical and wide-ranging examination of this issue is a major focus of this subject. This subject will facilitate active and informed student participation in the ongoing debate regarding current and future global energy policy and alternatives. Students will learn about conventional, alternative and potential future energy sources and then set this knowledge in the context of important economic, environmental, social and political factors that affect energy policy.

This subject investigates the components of a healthy and sustainable food system (production to consumption) from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on the domains of health, environment, economy and society. Students will critically analyse the concept of the ‘Sustainable Diet’ and the changes needed to ensure that our food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable. Students will be exposed to the views of the food industry, food producers and public health experts on food sustainability and will reflect on the implication their own food choices and their impact on the environment. This subject combines case-study and experience-based learning and exposes students to current and emerging trends and issues, equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills to improve our food system. The driving forces behind this subject is our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, the challenge of an increasing world population combined with increasing food insecurity, the rise of nutrition-related chronic diseases and the bi-directional relationship environmental change and the changes needed to ensure that the food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable.

You will use analyses to prepare organisational carbon accounts and to use this information to consider the emissions effects of various scenarios.

Understanding carbon accounting methods is essential for interpreting what organisations communicate through their carbon accounts and climate reports. The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is widely recognised as the best practice for carbon accounting, making a thorough understanding of it essential for success in this field. This subject will equip you to stay ahead of the curve in the fast-paced carbon accounting and climate reporting world.In this subject, you’ll gain a robust understanding of the GHG Protocol, including its definitions of organisational boundaries and the three Scopes of emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3). You&#39;ll also learn how to calculate carbon equivalents and effectively use ‘factors’, building a solid foundation of knowledge essential for critically engaging with the underpinning methods of carbon accounting.Our subject will help you to develop the critical thinking skills to stay agile and informed as a future carbon accountant and industry professional. You&#39;ll learn how to critically engage with contested carbon accounting and climate reporting practices, preparing you to adapt to evolving methods and best practices. Introduction to Carbon Accounting

Adventure or romance, tragedy or triumph, legends of extraordinary feats or quiet tales of everyday struggles: what kinds of stories have been told about families in the past and in the present? What literary forms are suitable for writing multi-generational family stories? What can you learn from published life-writing as you pen your own family saga? This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in HAA004 Writing Family History. Drawing on examples from published fiction and non-fiction texts in a range of genres and styles, students will learn critical and creative techniques open to writers of multi-generational family history. Students will have opportunity to develop key skills for reading and writing fiction and/or non-fiction based on genealogical research.

The Family Saga

Spanning over four centuries, from the Italian Renaissance in the late Middle Ages to the French Revolution in 1789, this subject explores the history of Early Modern Europe, a crucial period in shaping both Europe and the world we live in today. It investigates cultural, intellectual and religious change; the rise of the modern state; war and empire; the emergence of human rights; and modern political culture. Case studies include the Renaissance, the Spanish Empire, the Reformation, Witchcraft, the Enlightenment, and the Age of Revolution.

European History: Renaissance to Revolutions

Sustainability is a central concept for communities pursuing social and economic goals within ecological limits. Yet the different ways sustainability is defined, communicated and enacted reflects the wide range of underlying values, perspectives and priorities at stake. In this subject, students will explore the rich history and literature of sustainability, including the formation of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. By exploring the concept across economic, social and ecological thinking, students will develop an ability to think critically about sustainability in their own lives, and communicate sustainability challenges and solutions to diverse audiences.Employing practical skills in stakeholder engagement, narrative and visual communication, students will develop their research and communication skills to implement a sustainability solution in their local communities.

KSA101 will provide a background to the science and management of the seas with focus on Antarctic and Southern Ocean. On the completion of this subject, students will demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of the contemporary issues facing Antarctic, marine and coastal environments, and the management strategies used to optimise the value (market and non-market) of these areas.
