Students in this program will study philosophy and theology from within the Catholic liberal arts tradition, concentrating on the subject’s main themes of “human person” and “the good life”. They will learn to convey why the Church teaches various contemporary moral and social issues. They will investigate about the Catholic tradition of the arts, including painting, sculpture, music, architecture, film, and literature.

This subject contextualises modern slavery within global politics, focusing on the role and impact of global institutions such as the United Nations and World Trade Organisation. Other specific content focuses on bi-lateral and multi-lateral diplomatic efforts, as well as strategic relationships between nation states. The subject also focuses on practical, multi-stakeholder approaches to tackling modern slavery and human trafficking.

Modern Slavery and Global Politics

This subject is designed to enhance the critical reading and scholarly writing skills required by a Higher Degree by Research student. Students will be introduced to the key components of preparing a literature review as well as scholarly writing skills relating to the production of a research thesis. Areas of discussion will include: techniques for resourcing and managing literature; critically analysing experts in your field of study; utilising different formats of literature reviews; academic and scholarly writing styles; structuring long and short pieces; and preparing work for publication and examination. The course requires students to undertake a substantial literature review in their chosen area of research. They will reflect upon and respond to feedback through the assessment of both a first draft and final draft which may be used as part of the student’s final thesis.

Scholarly Reading and Writing

This course provides an overview of the development of different approaches to education in the Catholic Liberal Arts tradition. It includes considerations of Catholic sacraments and liturgy as ways of knowing God and one another. It examines in particular the principles and practices of biblical exegesis in the Catholic tradition, the method of Socratic dialogue and learning, the text-based method of shared inquiry, and the Great Books method of analysis. Those who take this course will learn how to teach using all these methods. At the same time, they will become acquainted with key texts and ideas of Catholic Thought.

Education in the Catholic Liberal Arts Tradition

This course is designed for those who are called upon daily to respond to social and moral issues. It selects and explores the Church’s responses, both prophetic and reflective, to controversial issues that touch upon what it means to be human and to lead a good life. It focuses on why the Church teaches what it teaches, particularly in Catholic Social Thought. Students will develop skills so that they can explain clearly what the Church teaches. It focuses on the perennial need for civil discourse in society.

It focuses on philosophical and theological developments of the theory of natural law and the meaning of virtue. The Good Life in Catholic Thought

The concept of the Human Person is central to understanding Catholic Thought. This course addresses contemporary challenges to understanding what it means to be human. It takes students through key philosophical and theological principles and concepts that have formed the Catholic understanding of what it means to be human. By engaging with philosophical texts, Scripture, and works of art and literature, it traces the development of Catholic teaching on the human person in the history of the Church. The course uses the methods of learning and teaching from the Catholic liberal arts tradition.

The Human Person in Catholic Thought

This course will explore the relationship between moral philosophy and applied ethics in professional life. Further, we study such issues as the relevance of ethics to specialisation, power and privilege in the professions, performance assessment, codes of ethics institutional values and corporate ethical culture. Specialist seminar topics may include: confidentiality, secrecy and truth telling in counselling; professional and management responsibility and accountability; dealing with power and authority, conflict resolution, performance assessment &amp; discipline.

Ethical Issues in Professional Life

The aim of this subject is to give the student an appreciation of the sources and development of the common law, equity and our legal institutions. The way in which the law has developed as society has changed and has adapted to differing demands and circumstances provides the key to a proper understanding of the law in its modern environment. It will trace the development of legal ideas and disciplines from English history around 1066 to modern day Australia. Historical development of the law will be examined through such topics as the on-going relationship between the common law and equity, the contribution of Christianity in general to the development of the law and the legal aspects of British settlement of Australia, Legal History gives us an insight into how and why our legal system today is what it is. It gives us the opportunity to trace our origins and developments to obtain a better understanding of what the legal profession is and how we are a part of it.

Legal History

This subject provides leaders in education, health, and the social sectors with strategies to effectively lead and manage organisational transformation. The subject explores theory and strategy of leadership within change management, underpinned by the principles of Catholic social teaching, with particular emphasis on human dignity and the common good.

Leading Change in a Catholic Context

This subject provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary business leadership and management theory and practice in the context of Catholic leadership. It examines skills and competencies required of contemporary business leaders including influence, communication, team leadership, and strategic leadership. It also examines application and assessment of these skills and competencies in a Catholic institutional setting.
