This course is the first part of the master’s Research Project and will explore the theory and practice of qualitative and quantitative research processes, to provide students with the essential knowledge integral to undertaking research projects. Through workshops and supervision, the student will develop a detailed project-based proposal which will include a literature review, aim and objectives and or hypotheses, detailed methodology, data collection and data analysis, research ethics, timeline, and budget.

Project Proposal Development

Exercise and Healthy Living investigates how physical activity and health lifestyle choices are important across the lifespan focusing particularly on strategies used to prolong physical activity involvement as we age. Current health statistics are examined, which for varying groups of Australians can influence the implications and promotion of health strategies in the community. Successful health promotion initiatives encouraging healthy lifestyles are explored as are partnerships within community groups, government and non-government sectors in this area.

Exercise and Healthy Living

The subject outlines the principles of cell and molecular biology as underpinnings of life and organism function. Topics covered include cell structure and function, the molecular aspects of the cell cycle and the molecular basis of genetics. Gene structure, the control of gene expression, regulation of gene function, molecular processes involved in protein synthesis and the role of genomics and of gene therapies in medicine will be examined.

Cellular and Molecular Biology

This subject will take a combined and systemic approach to the study of the structure and function of organ systems in the body during the lifecycle. This includes an introductory module about the organisation of the human body, body regions and specific organ systems. Modules will cover the anatomy, histology and physiology of organ systems responsible for the support and movement of the body and the maintenance of the body’s homeostasis (respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems). An online learning format will include lectures, laboratory sessions, online work and workshops.

The Human Body 1

This subject provides an introduction to the field of study, integrating information about maternal and infant mental health. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. Risk factors for mental health problems are presented for discussion and reflection, and information is provided about common disorders and treatment approaches. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.

Introduction to Perinatal and Infant Mental Health

This subject facilitates the synthesis of previous knowledge into a framework for advanced practice in a nursing specialty. Theories of role socialization and development, as they apply to advanced nursing within the context of the participant’s own sphere of practice are explored. Major perspectives relating to role definition, performance parameters and outcome measures are integrated into advanced practice through an individualized learning plan. A negotiated learning plan comprises the work and assessment for this course. Each participant negotiates a work plan directly related to their own practice area with the course coordinator. The learning plan, therefore, enables participants to examine and evaluate the scope of practice so that they engage in learning that is directly pertinent to their own professional growth and ongoing development.

Professional Role Development

This course provides learners with an opportunity to explore coaching and supervision models across the professions.The course will address specific challenges facing clinical supervisors, particularly in relation to optimising teaching and learning in clinical settings. By exploring best practice, as leaders, the course considers principles that underpin effective mentoring and role modelling in the context of the clinical setting.

Coaching and Supervision in Health

This subject provides learners with the opportunities to explore knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for quality facilitation and learning in the health professions. The subject acknowledges the uniqueness of educating in health. Requiring specific pedagogical approaches and the need to embed certain types of knowledge and skills into practice.

Learning and Facilitation in Health Professional Education

This subject will enable students to learn how to write an individualised exercise program to meet those needs. Students will be shown the fundamentals of exercise prescription and delivery to provide a basic program for healthy individuals. Concepts of progression and program modification will be identified.

Fundamentals of Exercise Programming

This subject will enable students to develop knowledge of the battery of anthropometric and physical tests available for human performance assessment, as well as performing health risk screening and appraisal techniques specific to exercise programmes for healthy individuals. These include measures of strength, endurance, sub maximal and maximal fitness testing and athlete profiling. Students will be able to identify which assessments are required for individuals with different exercise goals in the promotion of health and fitness.
