The operational challenges for policing, justice, regulatory and security agencies across Australia, Asia and the Pacific, and globally, are increasing in our networked world. These challenges are exacerbated by the compounding effects of systemic crises, for example, the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change. These crises generate significant disruptions and uncertainties which stretch the capabilities of traditional governing actors and institutions. They also give rise to novel governance landscapes and arrangements, which traditional justice and security actors must navigate and adapt to as part of coordinated and collaborative responses to systemic risks and harms.Combatting harmful and illicit activities in the face of disruptions, crises, and poly-crises necessitates innovative and holistic strategies for conceptualising and addressing crime, risk and resilience. Enhancing the resilience of established crime control and policing institutions and security governance networks in-turn requires a new generation of working professionals and recent graduates with: a rich understanding of established crime control concepts, processes, models and practices; expert knowledge of the core regulatory principles and practices; and the ability to recognise and adapt to opportunities and risks across domains, using recent advances in systems-level thinking. The Graduate Certificate in Crime, Risk &amp; Resilience has been developed with this cohort in mind.Taught by experts based at the world-renowned School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), the Graduate Certificate of Crime, Risk &amp; Resilience is a rich interdisciplinary training experience. The curriculum has been developed to ensure that graduates develop knowledge and skills which will enable them to gain professional recognition as change agents and thought leaders across multiple sectors and domains that are working to prevent and reduce criminal harms in the face of growing complexity.

Graduate Certificate of Crime, Risk and Resilience

This program is designed to help individual professionals and their organisations understand and apply contemporary Australian and international approaches to effective regulation and governance. Thematic issues covered include regulatory complexity, risk assessment, responsiveness, compliance, technology and regulation, and managing stakeholders. It is designed for people who manage regulatory portfolios and projects in government, business or NGO settings -- or who will do so in future. This introductory course introduces students to spoken and written Thai. In this course, students will learn the tones, consonants, vowels, essential grammar, polite particles, and the writing system of the Thai language. Students will also have the opportunity to learn a range of simple sentence patterns. They will learn to read and write basic sentences which will enable them to use the language in day-to-day situations. The course covers basic knowledge of Thailand, greetings, self and family, time and date, describing things around you, and asking for help, information, and directions. Cultural issues in relation to language use and politeness will also be included.This is a fast paced academic course at a University level, Via face-to-face video at a set time prescribed by the University. Please be aware of potential time zone differences.

This course aims to further develop students&#39; reading, writing, listening and speaking skills towards becoming independent users of Turkish language. Each week, students will explore the defining events and characteristics of a decade in Turkey from the 1920s to 2010s through film, literature, music and arts. Students will gain a deeper understanding of Turkish culture and society while developing the skills express opinions and ideas. Intermediate Turkish B

This course continues on from Elementary Turkish B and corresponds to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This course will further develop students&#39; reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to equip them to deal with most situations that may arise in a Turkish-speaking environment. Students will gain insights into Turkish society and culture through the study of a range of media. The students will be expected to complete online study modules weekly before attending the online live session.

Intermediate Turkish A

This course focuses on the analysis and translation of intermediate texts from various periods. Based on the knowledge acquired in Literary Chinese 1, the course attempts to improve the students’ proficiency in philological translation with a sample of different types of text. To meet the challenges posed by the selected texts, the course further introduces Sinological reference tools useful for their elucidation.

An introduction to contemporary spoken and written Vietnamese. This subject introduces the tones, essential syntax and the writing system of the Vietnamese language. By working through a series of graded and contextualised dialogues the students will begin to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The context of language use includes greetings, the individual, the family, time and date. Attention is given to the social and cultural context of language use. Vietnamese is spoken by more than 90 million people in Vietnam. It is also the native language of nearly 4 million people residing overseas; it is the sixth most‐spoken language in Australia. Study of Vietnamese will put students in a unique position to enter Vietnamese‐speaking environment and to gain a deep understanding of its rich culture, friendly people, and vibrant society.Via face-to-face video at a set time prescribed by the University. Vietnamese 1

Tok Pisin is an official language of Papua New Guinea, and is the most commonly and widely used language in the country with approximately 4 million native speakers. By learning Tok Pisin, students will gain a deeper understanding of the rich cultures, histories and societies of the people of Papua New Guinea and surrounding areas of the Pacific.
In this introductory course, students will gain a practical command of beginner spoken Tok Pisin, and an elementary capacity to read various types of texts in Tok Pisin with the help of a dictionary. By the end of the course, students should have an active vocabulary of approximately 1000 of the most frequently used and useful words in Tok Pisin. Students will have covered the main features in a grammar of Tok Pisin, and will have a command of the pronunciation of the language.

Tetum is the language of Timor-Leste. The study of Tetum is essential for anyone wishing to understand Timor-Leste&#39;s diverse society, vibrant culture and dynamic history. Timor-Leste is a close neighbour of Australia and ties between these two countries are increasing through bilateral initiatives and international security, trade and development projects.Tetum is a spoken language, because prior to independence in 2002 most Timorese did not have access to education and literacy rates was low. Reading and writing in Tetum is mainly to give students a strong foundation in speaking skills, and the emphasis in the course will be developing oral skills because Tetum is primarily an oral language.The ANU offers a rare opportunity to complete a minor in Tetum. Students completing a minor in Tetum will be uniquely placed to engage with the Timorese people, state, and society. Communications skills in Tetum will facilitate future opportunities in Immigration andCustoms, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, Commercial Import/Exports or in the broad ranging Aid sectors, or, to work as a professional translator/interpreter.The four courses needed to complete the minor are only offered online so can be studied from any location, but classes will be delivered on a weekly basis throughout the semester comprising of three-hour session a week. Students who complete this language minor will reach an Intermediate level of Tetum skills and knowledge. Sanskrit, the classical language of India, has long been renowned for its beauty, subtlety and complexity. It is the key to the civilizational treasures of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, and provides direct access to a vast repository of literary, scientific and philosophical wisdom. At the ANU we seek to balance the traditional practice of textual reception—reading and grammar—with language production—speaking, chanting and singing—to provide a truly balanced curriculum. In this beginner subject, students will be introduced to the grammar of classical Sanskrit, learn to read easy classical texts and engage in the Living Tradition of Sanskrit conversation, chanting and singing.

Uncover the origins of Sanskrit, India’s classical language. Trace its connections to ancient philosophy and literature. Learn to write the alphabet. Speak a variety of simple phrases, and take part in the Sanskrit tradition of chanting and singing.

This course will introduce students to basic Turkish language in alignment with the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, talk about their day and use simple structures and familiar phrases. They will be able to understand simple conversations if enunciated slowly and clearly. The students will be expected to complete online study modules weekly before attending the online live session. No previous knowledge of the Turkish language is required.

Elementary Turkish A

This subject is a practical introduction to Gamilaraay, an Indigenous Australian language. It is designed to develop basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at an introductory level, and to develop a knowledge and understanding of the relationship between language culture and society in the community of the speakers. No previous knowledge of Aboriginal languages is needed.
