Agrifinance and Risk Management

Financial technology (Fintech) refers to a relatively new branch of the growing and dynamic field of the banking and financial service sector. This subject covers innovations that banks and businesses can use to their advantage, including but not limited to big data analytics, artificial intelligence, robo-advising and cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. Fintech equip graduates with the necessary skills to navigate the technological revolution experienced in the last decade in the financial sector.

FinTech

This subject develops the student&#39;s knowledge of the role and responsibilities of Marine Surveyors and the skills that are necessary for carrying out marine survey work and the preparation of subsequent survey reports. It also considers a number of different survey categories and the respective roles of a number of national and international authorities such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its conventions, the maritime classification societies, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Port State Control authorities.

Marine Surveying and Inspection

The aim of this subject is to introduce you to the type of financial information that you, as a manager, can expect to receive and to the techniques that you can use to analyse this information for decision making and control purposes. The subject is therefore written from the perspective of you as a manager of an operating subject in a corporate environment. This approach will provide you with a sound basis by which you can understand, review, analyse and use the various types of financial information with which you are most likely to come into contact.This subject also contains sections in relation to ship and port investment evaluation and finance and shipping business risk management. It aims to enhance your capability in understanding practical financial issues and applying financial concepts in the maritime transport and logistics industry where you may be working.

Finance for Decision-Making

Investors and lenders have an important role with respect to sustainable development. Through directing their financial resources to socially and environmentally responsible investment options, investors and lenders have the power to make significant contribution to sustainable development. This applies to both small- and large-scale investors and lenders.Apart from the moral aspects associated with socially responsible investing, a failure to consider the social and environmental risks inherent in particular investments expose investors and lenders to potential financial loss.Investors need to be aware of the risks and opportunities that the sustainability agenda creates; they need to be aware of, and be able to critically evaluate, different approaches to ethical investment and lending; and they need to have an awareness of the products available within the market place.This subject responds to these needs as it:• Explores the meaning and role of socially responsible investment• Identifies the sustainability related risks and opportunities that aspects of an investee’s/borrowers operations create for investors or lenders• Identifies and explains some tools used to assess investments from a sustainability-related perspective• Discusses some available products available to ‘socially responsible’ investors and lenders.

Socially Responsible Investing

In this subject you will develop and apply the skills necessary to succeed in obtaining employment and a career in accounting and finance. As a graduate, it is essential to be able to demonstrate capability in applying technical skills in a contemporary workplace context together with other professional ‘soft’ skills. In your role as an accountant or finance professional, you will be required to apply critical thinking, decision making techniques and effective communication methods in a range of situations. The workshops will consist of expert guest presentations, discussion topics, and role plays. You will create a portfolio of activities that demonstrate your professional qualities and skills in applying your knowledge to generate relevant recommendations and solutions.

Pathway to Accounting and Finance Careers

This subject introduces students to the major concepts and analytical tools used in the theory and practice of financial management within an Australian context. It is designed to provide students with an understanding of: the scope and nature of the finance function and its role within management; and the theory of finance and how it underpins the evaluation of investment, financing and dividend policies. This subject will also develop practical skills in the identification and analysis of financial problems.

Principles of Financial Management

Derivatives or derivative securities are (as the name suggests) derived from other securities. Derivatives are used for a number of purposes, including insuring against price movements (hedging), increasing one’s exposure to price movements (speculation) or getting access to an otherwise hard-to-trade asset or market (market completion).The subject is comprised of three main modules: Options, Futures and Swaps. Topics covered include currency and futures contracts, pricing derivative securities, behaviour of share prices forward contracts, coupon swaps, interest rate derivative securities and other derivative securities, share options, options on stock indices, binomial, and Black-Scholes option pricing, hedging positions in options, advanced trading strategies, and exotic options.After completing this subject, students will be familiar with derivatives valuation and their use in risk management. The acquired skills will be useful in the management of financial risks in the financial sectors.

Derivatives

The purpose of the subject is to build an applied understanding of the psychological biases which influence financial decision-making. The behavioural finance perspective of decision-making is contrasted with more traditional finance perspectives. This enables a unique interpretation of market anomalies and asset pricing bubbles. The applications of the subject are across corporate finance and investment management.

Behavioural Finance

Most businesses operate in a global financial market, and very few facets of financial management are as important as managing exchange rate risk. This subject will provide you with the skills necessary to understand and address some of the multi-faceted issues of international financial management, with a focus on understanding exchange rate behaviour, factors influencing exchange rates, forecasting and managing exchange rate risk. Techniques will be studied and applied from various fields including financial management, macroeconomics, corporate finance and investment theory.

International Financial Management

Global sustainability challenges – including climate change, natural resource depletion, and rising inequality – are affecting the commercial environment in a way that presents both risks and opportunities for the financial sector. This subject studies the evidence of how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors matter and explains in detail how to incorporate these in company financial models and strategies, equity investing, bond investing, and bank lending. The subject equips students with knowledge, understanding and ability to apply the key principles and core practice of green and sustainable finance. Specific aims are to increase the student’s knowledge and understanding of:• climate change and its impacts• climate risks and emerging environmental and sustainability risks• the evolution of green and sustainable products and services in the banking, investment, and insurance sectors• increasing awareness of the role of the finance sector and finance professionals in supporting the transition to a low-carbon world.
