Applied Data Structures

With increasing entrenchment of AI in human affairs, its scientific, moral, political, economic, and other social aspects are becoming a significant issue. For instance, there is a significant concern that machine learning algorithms contribute to the discrimination against members of oppressed groups (e.g., women, people of colour). This unit, co-designed and co-taught by relevant experts in Computing, Philosophy, and cognate disciplines, will present and discuss key theoretical, ethical, and empirical questions about the conditions of explainable, safe, fair, and responsible AI. Furthermore, it will explore scientific, ethical, political, economic, and other social implications of topical issues such as algorithmic decision making, applications of deep learning models, and robot rights. Students will be exposed to ideas such as balancing risks and responsibilities, both in the scientific and moral sense, in the context of the evolving AI technologies.

Rights, Responsibilities, and AI

This subject begins with an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and security attacks on system services, and a discussion of different existing security mechanisms. The main focus includes cryptography, system security, network and web security. The students learn: <ol><li>Cryptographic algorithms and protocols, underlying network security applications including single-key and public-key encryption methods, hash functions, digital signatures and key exchange; </li><li> Intrusion detection systems and firewalls that can be used to protect a computer system from security threats, such as intruders, viruses, and worm; </li><li>The use of cryptographic algorithms and security protocols for providing network and internet security in terms of user authentication/identification, IP security and Web security.</li></ol>

Networks Systems and Web Security

In this subject students will examine: IPng Protocol and its features; Routing protocols like RIPv1/v2, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, and their performance under different operating environments; Transmission Control Protocol and flow control algorithms; UDP protocol and its uses.

Intermediate Network Engineering

This subject will strengthen and reinforce your knowledge of the design, development and deployment of network infrastructure, including OSI and TCP/IP layering architecture, routing protocols, LANs, WLANs and VLANS; network management; network security through ACLs, firewalls; and network virtualization and automation. The content of this subject prepares you for Cisco Academy certification. This subject assesses competency and only pass or fail grades are awarded.

Ideal if you have not previously studied programming, or you want to broaden your scope, this subject uses visual languages, JavaScript and programmable game environments to introduce concepts quickly, enabling you to build powerful programs and creations. Using programming concepts as a foundation, you will control bots in games and robot simulations. You will also explore topics in mark-up languages (e.g. HTML), natural language processing (how machines can process human language), and asynchronous programming (how robots, agents, and devices can communicate and coordinate). The subject is designed to prepare you for the study of professional programming languages in computer science or information technology degrees.
