Study the Master of Counselling (Child, Youth and Family Therapy) and develop your expertise and make a real difference in families’ lives. Gain the required knowledge to work in relationship, family, child and youth counselling, as well as child abuse prevention and intervention. This is a qualifying degree into the counselling profession and entry into this specialisation requires partial completion of the Graduate Diploma of Counselling at UniSQ, or equivalent. This specialisation is professionally accredited by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).

Master of Counselling (Child, Youth and Family Therapy)

Lifespan Growth and Motor Development

In this subject students will explore issues related to counselling with children and adolescents. Consideration is given to developmental issues, attachment, disorders of childhood and adolescence, chronic illness and disability. Strategies for intervention will also be addressed including engaging children in therapy and the therapeutic needs of children and adolescents facing specific problems. Child protection issues will also be explored. This subject is designed to equip students with basic knowledge with regard to child and adolescent functioning and practical skills for the delivery of child and adolescent counselling models.

Working with Children and Young People

This subject was previously known as ECHX824 Early Child Development Research and Practice.
This subject is designed to extend students&#39; knowledge of child development with a particular emphasis on approaches to understanding and measuring child development, considerations for quality in childcare, and evaluation of children&#39;s environments. Recent research studies of child development, especially in relation to prior-to-school settings, will be used as a major resource for examining contemporary theory and research in child development. Students will analyse research to develop their skills in using evidence-based approaches in teaching, to inform policy, and evaluate programs within prior-to-school settings.
