You will develop skills and knowledge in identification, quantification and management of both vertebrate and invertebrate biodiversity, and learn how to modify your environment to facilitate greater biodiversity. You do not have to be a scientist to take this subject, all you need is curiosity for the natural world and the desire to support the native biodiversity of your area.

In this subject, you are introduced to the study of anatomy. An overview of anatomical terminology, basic tissue types and a variety of techniques used to visualize the human body will be given followed by a more detailed study of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Anatomical principles and terminology will be applied to relevant body systems and the concept of integrated function of multiple systems in one body region will be introduced through the study of the trunk. You will be taught via an online-only OR blended (on-line and face-to-face) approach.

Human Biosciences B

This subject introduces you to human physiology - how the body works. You&#39;ll learn how the body is organised and the basics of cell structure and function, and how processes in the body are controlled. This will provide the foundation for the study of the major body systems important for support and movement (muscular system); regulation, integration and control (nervous and endocrine systems); fluids and transport (blood, heart, cardiovascular and immune systems); energy, maintenance and environmental exchange (respiratory, digestive and renal systems, metabolism); and the continuity of life (reproductive systems).

This subject can provide you with an introduction to chemical principles sufficient to be used as a pre-requisite for first Year chemistry subjects that are part of a chemistry major at the University of Tasmania. It is not designed to be a replacement for Year 12 Chemistry as it only covers topics of direct relevance as a background to the first-year subjects. This subject covers introductory chemistry for students with no previous knowledge of chemistry who intend to study the biological sciences. It does not form part of a Biology major but is taken as an elective subject.This subject explores the basic chemical concepts with a particular focus on biological systems and processes such as bonding and structure of organic molecules, aerobic respiration, ions in physiological systems, nutrient cycles and photosynthesis. Topics include fundamental chemical bonding theory, molecular geometry and interactions, reaction types and equilibria, introductory organic chemistry, and introductory thermodynamics. The laboratory program introduces basic techniques and skills commonly used in chemistry relevant to the biological sciences, along with reinforcing chemical concepts with practical experience. To complete this component of the subject, students must attend to complete a set of laboratory exercises. For students selecting an on-campus mode of study, you must attend fortnightly lab sessions throughout semester and students that have enrolled as a distance student you must attend a laboratory workshop delivered in the last week of semester. Both options are on campus at either the Hobart or Launceston campus.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is concerned with the function of biological systems at the molecular level. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is central to most studies in biology and life sciences and is directly related to biomedical research and biotechnology. In this subject, students are introduced to gene structure and function, DNA replication, transcription and translation; molecular biology; protein structure and its relationship to protein function and enzyme kinetics. Students will investigate a typical biochemistry technique and conduct research on a specific protein.

Study cells up close to learn how they are made up, function and convert food into energy to sustain life. Discover why protein is critical to a cell’s structure and performance, and how it helps to regulate the body’s tissues and vital organs.

Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

This subject introduces students to the science disciplines underpinning the study of marine and Antarctic environments and the application of science to solve problems in marine and Antarctic disciplines. It provides the foundational skills and knowledge for students in the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science for specialised study in years 2 and 3.Topics that are covered include:• an understanding of Gondwana and geology of Antarctica, sub-Antarctic islands and the surrounding ocean;• ice and climate studies;• the physical and chemical nature of the Southern Ocean;• the terrestrial and marine environment of the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and cool temperate areas, including plants, animals, birds and fish;• the impact of humans on marine and Antarctic environments, including the study of global climate change.The students will benefit from lectures delivered by experts in their field, including guest lecturers, and further develop their understanding through in-class debates and hands-on fieldwork and laboratory practicals (available online).

Biochemistry is concerned with the function of biological systems at the molecular level. In this subject, you are introduced to cell biology and cell metabolism, building on the concepts developed in BCM201 (Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). You will study the generation of energy in cells through the oxidation of carbohydrates and lipids; the formation of ATP, the energy currency of cells; lipids, cellular membranes and compartmentation; and the signalling processes that co-ordinate and regulate cellular activity. The practical exercises illustrate some basic experimental and data analysis skills and reinforce concepts in metabolism and cell biology.

Study the structure and role of living cells to understand the biological processes that give and sustain life. Learn how the composition of cells can change and cause disease, and how proteins and DNA interact to create health benefits.

Metabolic Biochemistry and Cell Biology

This subject teaches students the fundamental principles of palaeontology and introduces them to the history of life on Earth. Readings and lectures cover topics such as the origin of life, evolution, extinction and palaeoecology. A series of practical exercises emphasises core concepts in palaeontology, covering both pure and applied aspects of the discipline.There is no intensive school for GEOL202. However, there is a non-mandatory two day face-to-face experience including a workshop and field excursion to a nearby fossil locality to give students an opportunity to see, measure and collect fossils in the field. On campus and online students are encouraged to attend.

Introductory Palaeontology

This subject introduces students to the essential concepts in current biology. BIOX1310 builds on the laboratory, statistical and communication skills obtained in BIOX1610. BIOX1310 forms the first step for students pursuing a career in the biological sciences, and provides a basis for students in other disciplines who wish to maintain an interest in this dynamic field. The theme of this subject is evolution. The first part of the subject is concerned with the origin of life and discusses current theories on how life may have arisen on a previously lifeless planet. We discuss evolutionary theory in detail including some of the genetic principles that underlie evolution. In the second part we introduce the major groups of organisms examining their diversity and how they function. In the final part we discuss the ecological interactions between organisms from the small scale to global patterns. Throughout the subject, these core concepts are illustrated with examples from current research. BIOX1310 is designed as a companion subject to BIOX1110 in Session 2 and requires attendance at on-campus sessions.
