In this subject students will be introduced to the types, components and practices of low-rise domestic construction. In this overview of basic constructional materials used in domestic construction students will apply aspects of applied science to relevant building types by examining the properties of matter, wave motion, heat, light and sound). Students will also evaluate solar effects on buildings. Fieldwork is a component of this subject.

The emphasis is on the importance of the visualisation of concepts for a sketch design and design development. Architecture and Interior Architecture Methods 1A - Analogue Literacy

This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Design and renovate healthy and sustainable homes. You’ll unpack what sustainability means for dwellings. Look into designing for health and climate. Exercise your creativity. Get to know sustainable products and building materials.

This subject was previously known as BAS130 Understanding Architecture.This subject is an introduction to broad themes and histories in World Architecture that underlie the design and production of architecture and the built environment. Reading Architecture Globally

In this subject you will learn project management concepts, tools and processes used in the formulation, delivery and management of construction projects. Your learning will focus on practical examples and incorporate analysis of construction project case studies. You will develop skills in construction project management processes, project troubleshooting, and formulation of a detailed project plan. This subject will include tutorials and workshops with guest speakers from industry and provide you with the opportunity to consolidate your learnings from other subjects. Note: We recommend completing this unit last as per the recommended study pattern for Diploma of Construction Management (TAS-CMG-DIP).

This subject is an introduction to Australia’s Building Control System including: the functions of the WA Building Commission; the role of Permit Authorities; planning legislation interaction with Building Construction; final commissioning of major projects from a regulatory perspective; sustainability and modern Building Control legislation and access for people with disabilities in current Codes.

This subject was previously known as Interior Design Studio 1 - City.An introduction to the world of designing – the act and the outcomes with an emphasis on the domain of the ‘interior’ and its creation through design. The subject introduces the discipline of Interior Architecture and the role of the Interior Architect as a practitioner with particular attitudes and beliefs. Community settings within the city are explored as the context of the interior: the city as cultural artefact, its conditions, its histories and spaces. Students will study the relationship between idea, space, form and structure as it is related to human culture that also recognises indigenous culture; analysis of the city as a representation of collective values; analysis, interpretation and creation of the elements of the city including interiors, pavilions, gardens, squares, streets, stairs, doors, gates and windows. This subject was previously known as Architecture Design 2.This subject explores the sense of place and the notion of inhabitation. It explores the built environment as a representation of collective values, investigates the relationship between ideas, human body and built form, and develops an understanding of primary components of space, form, structure and materials. It refers to and uses communication methods taught concurrently in other subjects. This subject requires students to create new structures for inhabitation at a personal scale that engage well with a given landscape, including solar, wind and sound.
