This subject will provide foundational financial knowledge by introducing basic financial concepts and procedures that are fundamental to the generation of financial information for business decision making. Emphasising the awareness of ethical responsibilities and sustainable practices, this subject highlights use of financial information by a variety of stakeholders in planning, controlling and investing decisions. By understanding the key concepts that underpin the preparation of financial reports, you will examine, interpret financial statements, and generate financial information. Utilising various financial management concepts, you will learn the application of budgeting, costing, and capital investment techniques that support decision making.

Accounting for Decision Making

This subject introduces you to the nature of accounting and its role in business. Accounting for Business develops students’ understanding of the language of business through the analysis of financial transactions and statements to assess a business’s financial health and performance, and apply this understanding to decision making in variety of roles. You will also learn the ethical requirements underpinning financial statements and how to interpret financial statements. Additionally, you will understand a budget and its importance to the business as well as the information required to make strategic and tactical decisions from a non-accountant user&#39;s perspective.

This subject develops skills and knowledge that enable students across all disciplines to make informed and responsible decisions using accounting and financial information. The subject explores different forms of business and financing options and how these affect business decisions through the understanding of financial statements. Students will learn about basic accounting and financial terminologies; cash and accrual accounting, capital investment decisions, business financing, time value of money, triple bottom line reporting and business budgeting. This subject aims to expand students’ understanding of holistic accounting gained in their previous core accounting subjects, to develop and apply their accounting knowledge, skills and terminology in the context of broader notion of accounting that includes accountability and social and environmental accounting. In particular, students are introduced to a number of accounting standards, their broader applications, professional reporting requirements and changes taking place within the accounting environment, particularly with regard to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The consideration of the issues, activities and techniques in this subject will enhance the professional and technical skills students will need to perform effectively in the workplace as an accountant.

Financial Accounting and Reporting

Currently over 100 countries have adopted International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), or their equivalent, to prepare financial statements by listed companies. A sound knowledge about IFRS is essential for accounting professionals to prepare comparable and understandable financial information to users. This subject focuses on applying IFRS and Australian accounting standards to account for complex practical issues. This includes applying accounting standards involving measurement and professional judgement to recognise common revenue transactions, analyse business acquisition, and preparing consolidated financial statements.

Expand and deepen your understanding of topics underpinning Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASBs) standards, other regulations and statutory requirements, and disclosure by reporting entities, with this advanced accounting subject. With a focus on accounting for group structures, you will explore equity methods of accounting for associates and joint arrangements, operating segments and construction contracts. You will also examine foreign currency transactions, translating financial statements of foreign operations, and financial instruments including derivatives and hedging. Studying this subject will allow you to hone your practical skills solving complex business problems and preparing consolidated financial statements. Advanced Financial Accounting

TAS-BFA303 is designed to introduce you to the key concepts of auditing and the assurance practice environment within the Australian professional and legal framework. The subject&#39;s broad aim is to provide you with knowledge of practical auditing from the initial audit planning, the study of internal controls, substantive testing and evidence gathering to the final audit report. You will be introduced to the professional auditing standards, Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants and the audit process and the audit procedures used by external company auditors to provide an opinion on the truth and fairness of financial reports. The objectives of the subject are to advance students’ analytical and decision making skills by applying auditing theory to practical case studies. A strong emphasis is placed on students&#39; ability to communicate their views in a clear, concise and logical manner.
