About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the structures and basic principles of the health classification systems, ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS, used in Australian hospitals.
- Examine the medical record to identify and further clarify diagnoses and interventions.
- Identify and abstract from the medical record the appropriate conditions, diagnoses and interventions required for the classification process.
- Apply the Australian Coding Standards to accurately code inpatient episodes of care.
- Apply the standards and conventions of health classification within a time frame that aligns with industry expectations.
- Classification of diseases using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-AM)
- Classification of health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's Australian Classification for Health Interventions (ACHI)
- Classification of diseases and health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's Australian Coding Standards (ACS)
- Coding conventions
- Medical record abstraction
- Clinical topics including diagnostic, therapeutic and radiological techniques, and drug therapy
In this subject you will develop an introductory working knowledge of the fundamental conventions and rules for classification of diseases and health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-AM), the Australian Classification for Health Interventions (ACHI) and the Australian Coding Standards (ACS). You will develop an understanding of the complexities of the classification process. You will develop skills in medical record abstraction and interpretation to support the application of health classification systems. You will develop competency in classificatory practice within the parameters of expected industry timeframes and levels of accuracy. You will gain knowledge in diagnostic, therapeutic and radiological techniques, and drug therapy. Only a Pass or Fail is awarded. A Pass will reflect a grade 75% or greater. This is in line with industry standards and expectations
This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students, who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

- One-hour individual test (equivalent 1000 words) (25%)
- One Individual Assignment (450 words equiv) (15%)
- Two-hour individual test (equivalent 2000 words) (50%)
