We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food security (and insecurity) can drive conflict, propels human migration, and informs our relationship with land and environment. With an overarching global perspective, this subject explores food production and consumption, exploring its sociological, political, historical, economic, ethical, and scientific contexts.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Food Security

Youth is often presented as a period of storm and stress or a time of crisis. On the other hand youth culture is often something many seek out, envy, and desire. This subject will acquaint students with Australian and international literature concerned with the study of youth. Youth Identities

This subject aims to introduce students to the richness of sociology by stimulating their curiosity about the relationship between the individual, society and the globe using sociological thinking. This subject will introduce students to the history of sociology and some of the thinkers who have influenced the discipline. Introduction to Sociology

Have you ever wondered how aspirin knows where the pain is?  Or why some drugs are so addictive?
This subject explores drugs, asking how they are discovered and regulated. It examines social drugs such as alcohol and nicotine, illicit drugs such as cannabis and cocaine, and medicines such as painkillers and anti-depressants. It considers social, ethical and economic issues such as reproductive medicines, drugs in sport and the rise of complementary medicines, as well as future personalised therapies.

Uncover the effects legal, illicit and medicinal drugs have on society. Follow the steps in a drug's development, from discovery to clinical testing and marketing. Analyse the ethical and economic features. Look into herbal medicines and homoeopathy.

NOTE: If you study this subject in Winter, the subject will be a shorter duration (5 weeks) and will require at least 20 hours of study per week.Despite rumours to the contrary, the need to understand the politics of sex and gender is only increasing in the 2020s. The #MeeToo movement, transgender tipping points, crises of masculinity, persistent inequality and misogynist violence are all pressing issues of our time.This subject covers major theoretical approaches to sex, gender, and sexuality; especially feminist approaches. The first half focuses develops analytical tools for understanding and debating significant contemporary issues. The second half of the subject considers how feminist approaches can be used in disciplines of development studies, policy, security studies and political economy. Improve your understanding of whether society helps construct gender and sexuality. Look back at the rise of the feminist and sexual liberation movements. Contemplate the ways in which sex and gender are linked to life, happiness and justice.

This unit explores the socio-cultural and political contexts, dimensions, and outcomes of migration and the cross-cultural flows they produce. We examine the forces that drive increased mobility—including humanitarian emergency situations and extreme weather events that destroy livelihoods and strain local food systems, labour supply chains, and economic and social aspirations. The unit considers processes of categorising and labelling people on the move: forced migrant, refugee, asylum seeker, irregular migrant, and boat people challenging us to develop intellectual positions on contemporary issues of justice, rights and the securitisation of migration in their local and global dimensions.
