ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement is the second of two subjects (ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement) where students apply and consolidate learning acquired in the Master of Public Health program to prepare them to practice as public health professionals. It is linked to the Australian Qualifications Framework and supported by educational theory on the importance of experiential learning for preparing students for professional practice. A major learning activity of ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement is a project consisting of a practice-based public health activity or fieldwork that involves the integration of knowledge and skills across multiple public health areas, allowing students to directly apply learnings with the aim of improving and advancing population health. Students will undertake ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement at the completion of ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice, where they will apply knowledge acquired in -PUBHPUBH649 Preparation for Practice. In ACU-PUB655 Practice Placement, students are to demonstrate core public health competencies as appropriate, for example community engagement and ethical practice. Overall, the aim of ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement is to enable students to apply and integrate their public health skills and knowledge within a summative public health practice experience.

Practice Placement

Research is the process of the generation of new knowledge. It is a cornerstone of public health. Research in public health requires the consideration of the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. For this reason, it is broad in scope covering several disciplines and professions and including mixed methodologies. Large scale laboratory type experiments are not possible in public health. Rather, public health research addresses multiple socio-environmental influences through interventions directed at developing public policy, strengthening community action, creating supportive environments in &#39;real world&#39; settings (e.g. tobacco control, transport policy). Examples of public health research include systematically reviewing research evidence to answer focussed questions, trend analysis, evaluating the impact of &#39;natural&#39; experiments and economic modelling. Public health research seeks to understand program effects (&#39;process&#39; analysis) in contrast to just measuring them.Over the course of two subjects (ACU-PUBH651 Thesis A and ACU-PUBH652 Thesis B) across two semesters (one subject per semester), students will design, undertake and report on research they conduct under approved academic supervision. In ACU-PUBH651 Thesis A, students conduct the first phase of the research project, providing the background and rationale through the completion of a literature review and research proposal. Within the current subnject (ACU-PUBH652 Thesis B), students build on the work completed in PUBH651, conducting their research project (as outlined in the research proposal written in ACU-PUBH 651 Thesis A) under approved academic supervision within applicable time and resource constraints.The aim of this subject is to enable students to apply their knowledge of health research by conducting independent research and producing and presenting a well written public health research thesis.

Public Health Research Thesis B

Research, the process of knowledge generation and communication, is a cornerstone of public health. Over the course of two units (PUBH651 Thesis A and PUBH652 Thesis B) completed in two semesters (one unit per semester) students will design, undertake and report on research they conduct under approved academic supervision. PUBH651 Thesis A addresses the first phase of the research project. In consultation with their supervisor(s), students will select a research topic relevant to public health that has sufficient scope to enable application of advanced reasoning and research skills. Students will first conduct a literature review on their selected topic, providing the background and rationale for their proposed research. Students will then design and write a detailed and feasible proposal for a research project that they will undertake in the following semester within PUBH652 Thesis B.The research proposal will be assessed both by oral and written presentation. The aim of this unit, PUBH651 Thesis A, is to enable students to apply their knowledge of health research by producing a literature review and research proposal as the foundation for conducting independent research towards the completion of a public health research thesis in PUBH652.

Public Health Research Thesis A

ACU-PUBH649 Preparation for Practice is one of two subjects (PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and PUBH655 Practice Placement) which will apply and consolidate learning acquired in the Master of Public Health program to prepare students to practice as public health professionals. PUBH649 Preparation for Practice comprises a range of educational activities which will prepare students for PUBH655 Practice Placement. In PUBH649 Preparation for Practice, students will undertake coursework including modules on sourcing placement, skills strengthening and practice reflections.ACU0 PUBH649 Preparation for Practice is linked to the Australian Qualifications Framework and supported by educational theory on the importance of experiential learning for preparing students for professional practice.In the subsequent subject, ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement, students will build on knowledge acquired in PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and complete a project consisting of a practice-based public health activity or fieldwork that involves the integration of knowledge and skills across multiple public health areas. In AICU-PUB655 Practice Placement, students are to demonstrate core public health competencies as appropriate, including community engagement and ethical practice. Overall, PUBH649 Preparation for Practice and ACU-PUBH655 Practice Placement aim to enable students to apply and integrate their public health skills and knowledge within a summative public health practice experience.

Preparation for Practice

We are constantly reminded that health is global in nature, affecting populations irrespective of country, culture and ideology. Responses to challenges in health therefore need to be global as well, transcending national boundaries, governments and health care systems. In addition, global health depends on development and prosperity that is achieved without irreversible depletion of natural resources and exploitation of environments. This subject will equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge related to global health and sustainable development. Students will learn about health as a human right, the concept of social justice as well as sustainability in health and the sustainable development goals. They will distinguish the terms international, global and globalization; they will identify who are the main players in global health and critique the roles that these players have; they will discuss goal setting for global health improvement as well as global health inequalities, and global health and environmental health; the role of multi-national corporations will be examined; threats to global health and sustainability will be identified. The aim will be to equip students with sufficient knowledge about global health to be able to interpret trends in the global health literature as well as deepen students appreciation of the interdependence of global health and sustainable development using contemporary examples and case studies.

Global Health and Sustainable Development

Health is determined by many factors. Public health professionals must have a detailed understanding of these factors to improve population and individual health and wellbeing. Students will learn to critique the evidence on health determinants and the implications for creating a society conducive to health. Complex public health/social issues involving multiple health determinants will be explored. The unit will help students consolidate their critical analysis of health determinants , the interaction between determinants and the promotion and maintenance of healthy social and physical environments. This unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the determinants of health, inequalities in their distribution within the population, and the ability to discuss approaches to addressing these inequalities critically.

Determinants of Health

An in depth understanding of the history and principles of public health is vital to becoming an effective public health professional. In this unit, students will examine the principles of public health and consider key historical developments that have shaped public health, with an emphasis on the broader social and economic influences. Students will examine public health values and ethical principles indicating how they support public health scope of practice. The assessment of evidence used in public health will be introduced particularly as it relates to priority setting and policy development in health care. . Students will apply their understanding of the principles for public health in activities that exemplify key debates, difficulties and resourcing dilemmas of contemporary public health challenges. The aim of this unit is to provide students with the opportunity to evaluate the historical milestones in public health that have shaped it as a discipline and through critical analysis of the key principles that underpin public health practice develop experience in using tools used in the discipline.

History and Principles of Public Health

Individuals experiencing mental illness are reported to experience a significantly increased prevalence of physical health inequalities. Mental health practitioners must therefore be able to recognise and respond to these needs through the provision of holistic person-centred recovery-oriented interventions.Within a cultural perspective the physical health of individuals with an underlying mental health condition, who experience the phenomenon of diagnostic overshadowing, will be explored. Challenges associated with coexisting health conditions, including alcohol and other drug use, psychopharmacological agents and the impact on the individual will be examined. Students will identify strategies and policies for health promotion, prevention and early intervention. Within a multidisciplinary team approach students will explore issues related to access and utilisation of health resources for recovery. This subjectwill broaden and enhance students&#39; knowledge and skills in applying effective health promotion strategies for individuals with a mental health condition.The aim of this subject is to provide students with the opportunity to critically evaluate the relationship between mental health and physical health, and the social inequalities of health experienced by individuals experiencing mental illness.
