Students are invited to explore the contemporary situation of language in Aboriginal Australia, contextualised in its various social settings, along with a strong emphasis on First Voice. This includes a focus on the languages of Victoria and language revitalisation, as well as new varieties of Aboriginal language such as Kriol. The subject provides students with the opportunity to reflect on understandings of language and culture, continuity and changes in the face of disruption, and on their connection with the local environment and its people.

Language in Aboriginal Australia

This subject explores the history of the resistance to colonisation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia, with a focus on Melbourne and Victoria, from 1770 to the present day. You will be asked to critically consider the actions of the invaders and reflect on how the lives of First Nations peoples were impacted by invasion.  Case studies include frontier wars, missions, the Stolen Generations, exemption policies, war service, sport, interwar activism, land rights and reconciliation. You will explore theoretical frameworks and specific examples to help understand how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have resisted the forces of colonisation. The subject will also ask students to reflect on their own relationship to histories of colonisation, and to think about how the history of the colonisation of Australia has been remembered and forgotten. You will also examine the relationship between the discipline of history and colonialism, including the problems created when knowledge is constructed using the colonial archive. This is a level 3 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Histories Of Indigenous Resistance

In this subject, you will journey through 65,000 years of First Peoples settlement in Australia. Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and perspectives are embedded throughout this subject and you will learn through both Traditional and Western knowledge systems. You will investigate a series of major themes, including the first settlement of different parts of the continent; interactions with and adaptations to varied and changing environments; technological choices; and patterns of economy and land use. You will investigate a range of case studies to evaluate archaeological and ethnohistorical information and how they have been used to provide insights into past ways of life. You will also explore the history of Australian archaeological theory and practice, providing critical links with developing contemporary professional best practise approaches. This is a level 3 subject. The Archaeology Of Australia's First Peoples

In this subject you will be introduced to various elements of Indigenous Australia. You will study a broad range of issues of relevance to contemporary Aborigines and Torres Strait Islander people. There will be a particular emphasis on the Indigenous topics of Australia, in addition, students will gain an understanding of regional variation throughout Australia. Issues discussed include cultural continuity and differences, identity, self-representation, spirituality, family, gender, land, politics, law, economics, education, health, history, art and music. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
